About the Author

Beloved author and life-long gardener Louise Riotte passed away in 1998 at the age of 89. During her life, she wrote twelve books on gardening, companion planting, and garden lore, among them the ever-popular Carrots Love Tomatoes. Her father taught her how to practice astrology, while her mother was an herbalist. Together they greatly influenced her life and her books, including Roses Love Garlic, Astrological Gardening, Sleeping with a Sunflower, Catfish Ponds & Lily Pads, and Raising Animals by the Moon. Riotte was an artist as well as a writer, and her own drawings appear in all of her books. She took great pride in her garden near her home in Ardmore, Oklahoma.

This is a good helpful little book on blackberries. Using it to develop and improve my gardening skills

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful for a blackberry grower

F.g. · April 29, 2011

I just have a small patch of blackberries and they are doing well. But I wanted to know more about what I was doing with them, so I bought this booklet. Half of the booklet is devoted to Raspberries, which I cannot grow in Florida. However the other half was devoted to Blackberries, and they had some good ideas. I did not realize for example that there are upright blackberries and vining type blackberries and what I do have is the vining ones (BUT they are thornless and that is a plus). They show how to build a trellis for them which I plan to do this weekend. Another good section is how to prune them for the most yield. I never had any idea I would need to prune them. I think it is a booklet well worth having if you are planning to grow any amount of blackberries.

4.0 out of 5 stars Berry Good

This was a great introductory guide to dealing with black and raspberries. I recently moved to a home with a large untended thicket and I found the information in the guide to be very helpful. As with all SCWB publications, while it's a small pamphlet sized book and is not the definitive source on the subject, the guide gives useful, simple instructions and information. I would recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the important information!

Just the best information that will get you from planting to fruit! It's perfect!

5.0 out of 5 stars Trusting your source !

This author is one if the best to make you understand the What, When, Where, &Why, of planting. Since the 1970's I have enjoyed her wit and Wisdom! You can tell when a person LOVES what they do! It works! That's a great Blessing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Berries Rasp & Black Very Helpful!

C. · April 23, 2010

There is a lot of detail and sometimes if feels like the procedures for, planting specifically, seemed a little bit over kill, however, all of the information was very useful and helpful. It's better to have more information than not enough. It was easy to read and appears to be easy to reference in the future. Another bonus, it was very affordable! I would definitely recommend this little book!

3.0 out of 5 stars Warehouse needs to get more mousetraps

L.O. · January 13, 2021

just arrived a little bit ago (the dog kindly went beserk to let me know that the UPS guy dared set foot on the porch) These are a great series of little books, I have several others and ordered the berries one to add to the set. The book itself is great--but think they need to write a guide for the warehouse how-to pest control and not ship things obviously chewed on. Content excellent, opening it up to see what looks like a rodent has been checking out my new book before I had chance, not so much.
