Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-Arranged in chapters by continent, these crafts will be useful for geography and cultural reports. The authors use a system of symbols to denote which continent is associated with the activity, the level of difficulty, the basic art technique involved, and how easy or difficult the required materials are to procure. Black-and-white line drawings illustrate the process and/or the finished product for each project. Most of the activities are interesting and directly linked to the cultures they represent. Others, like several for Antarctica, seem more contrived. Building a structure of icing and sugar cubes is sure to be a hit with children, but how illustrative is it of the Antarctic environment? Necessarily, not all countries and cultures are included but many are represented by more than one project. While children can use this book, the descriptions (e.g., "Young children create a miniature woodland scene..."), the pervasive use of symbols or icons, and the terse but accurate directions indicate that this book was designed for adults.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun art book

A.C. · June 12, 2025

Fun way to explore art in other countries!

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a cool book for younger kids!

M. · July 22, 2020

This book is broken up by continent and then country. Each continent has a bibliography of books to go with, mostly kids books by the looks of it. Then every art project has a blurb about how it relates to the country. This is such a fun learning tool!

4.0 out of 5 stars perfect for an art class...

C.K.M. · April 12, 2013

I was looking for art projects to complliment a diversity curriculum...while this is perfect for an art class, I am only able to use a few of the projects. Most of the projects are geared for grade schoolers and up (5 years and up).I am keeping the book to compliment my educational library at home and in the classroom. You might want to check out "Hands around the world" (I rating this one 5 stars!).

A great book!! Easy projects and ideas. We have had this for over seven years and LOVE it. Great for parties, for when visitors come. I am finally making time to do this review. We’ve used it as a resource for artsy projects with supplies I typically have on hand, making for a great go-to when screen time is not available/offered. Fantastic, easy, hands-on and imaginative projects! Highly recommend.

The content looks nice. I'm sure we'll enjoy it. However, we received a defective book. The cover is upside down.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't wait till my kids try it out!

S.R. · November 13, 2012

I ordered this book as a Christmas gift for my kids ages 4 and 7. They love art, and I love the idea of doing art projects from around the globe. It came in the mail yesterday and flipping through it, I am very pleased and excited for Christmas to come so my kids can try some of the projects. It has a rating system to help you with picking projects which is nice.

Love the variety and the cultural uniqueness of each project. My kids and I love this book.

Excellent !

The crafts are unique, but illustrations underwhelm my child.

K.A. · February 21, 2024

The book is full of unique craft ideas from all over the world. The instructions are wonderful and clear. We have had most of the matieeals on hand (but not all of them). My only complaint is that there are no photos of the finished product - just rough black and white illustrations... Which does not excite my 4.5 year old very much. When reaching for a craft book, she never reaches for this one and she says it's because her other craft books have coloured photographs of each craft, which helps her to better understand what the craft is and what it will look like... So, it's a good book, lots of creative ideas, but no photos. Just rudimentary illustrations.
