The new version of Cress's translation of Descartes's Meditations has attained an unusually high degree of readability . . . and at the same time, of fidelity to the original.--Roger Ariew, University of South Florida, and Marjorie Grene (1910-2009), Virginia Polytechnic Institute

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic - but still important
(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } I bought this book because I wanted to examine my suppositions on the philosophy of mind, and test their validity as Descartes did his faith in all things. I was thoroughly impressed by Descartes reasoning, and his method has left a great impression upon my own thinking. His argument for dualism has been adapted by modern philosophers such as Chalmers, Kripke, and Nagel; and as such it is an argument which deserves to be studied and appreciated. It is also one which " awoke me from my dogmatic slumber " with regards to physicalism, if I may be so dramatic. I highly recommend this to everyone.
5.0 out of 5 stars so I would say this is a great book. Or is it
Make me question everything. After reading this book I questioned reality, sensations, and even my own existence. I am now trapped in the vortex of time all by myself for about 1000 years now, so I would say this is a great book. Or is it? What makes it a great book? What is a great book? What is a book? What is life? What is reality? Why am i a philosophy major? What am i going to do with my life now? Why am i writing a funny review on Amazon instead of studying for my finals so I can stop disappointing my parents?
5.0 out of 5 stars Great self help book
Enjoyable reading for self help
4.0 out of 5 stars The "thinking thing" meditating on god, soul and body
We are 1641, Descartes or "the thinking thing", as he calls himself, is meditating about the existence of a god + telling apart soul and body. Medieval follies apart, the fun here comes from his ingenious methodology building the argument. First, he admits being aware of his ignorance therefore prone to errors. Second, he claims to be able to free his mind from senses and prejudices; also ready to demolish his own opinions given new evidence. Then he goes about defining what information his senses are providing to conclude that, in a senseless mindset, the idea of god is still with him. I’m writing this in 2016, we know humans can’t reach such a senseless state but Descartes is still very entertaining.
5.0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Philosopher of All Time
His thoughts on existence and creation in relation to objective reality are pretty good. Something about French philosophy. Concrete things.
5.0 out of 5 stars College book
This is exactly what students need for their philosophy class in college. It’s by far the best/ easiest transition to get and Hackett does a great job with the publishing of the book
5.0 out of 5 stars I bet Descartes makes you question your atheism.
Although Descartes may have never adequately answered the questions he proposed, he cracked open the ark of modern being and released phantoms that haunt us still today. Your a fraud if you don't at least face Descartes ideas with some dignity. Get off my lawn.
3.0 out of 5 stars Tiny print
The print size is pretty small making it tedious to try to read.

With only 70 pages it's just enough for the matter that make a good time of reading in small amount of our time.
Very interesting content.
Worth a read.
Five Stars
item as described good delivery
A major philosophical work.
A prof might describe the language as "Dense." One of the premier philosophical works in an inexpensive form. Not bedtime reading for most of us but worth the effort to understand one of the major figures in Western philosophy.
Nice easy ready...Honestly not as complexed as I expected
Book is good if you are into or studying philosophical thought. Some very interesting ideas, love it.
