From the Back Cover

As a young man, Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa, a Zulu from the South African province of Natal, was determined to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather and become a tribal historian in order to keep the rich oral tradition of his culture alive. In this book, begun in response to the injustices against Africans and their culture, he sets these legends down in writing. He begins with the creation myth, when Ninavanhu-Ma, the Great Mother, created the human race. From there, an epic unfolds, an intricate and vivid cultural tapestry populated by gods and mortals, cattle herders and supreme kings, witch doctors, lovers, grave diggers, warriors, and handmaidens. The story continues all the way up to the colonial era, when a Portuguese Kapitanoh and his crew arrive on the African shore. Indaba, My Children is a classic and indispensable resource for anyone interested in the cultural life of Africa and the human experience as it is filtered into myth.

About the Author

Credo Mutwa was born in 1922 in Natal, the grandson of Ziko Shezi, a Bantu witch doctor who was the guardian of his tribe's history. In 1963, Mutwa himself was officially proclaimed High Witch Doctor, but the following year he broke his sacred oath of secrecy by writing Indaba, My Children. The book was both a commercial and critical success (it has sold over 250,000 copies in South Africa alone) and Credo Mutwa has gone on to write a number of other works as well as pursuing his talents as a painter and sculptor. He currently lives at the Shamwari Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape where he has founded a traditional healing centre.

5.0 out of 5 stars An anthology of ancient spiritual wisdom & practices

J.K.J. · May 12, 2020

I first obtained this book in the 196's & delighted in it with every reading. Over the years, the pages became dogeared, yellowed, & some fell out. I carefully taped them back into place & gingerly handled the book only on special occasions. I'm so excited to renew my aquaintance with this volume. It is sankofa!

5.0 out of 5 stars African History

if you want to know African History than read this book for it is the only book on the true African History that is written by an African Historian. You will be glued to this book and it will be hard to stop reading it.I recommend this book to all races. Credu did a good service to the African people though he was forbidden towrite Africa's History, for the Africans don't want anyone to know it, and because of that they are paying horrible price of death and diseases caused by the White Man that wants to eradicate the black race from Africa through death. The Africans didn't want to fit into the world and be left alone and didn't want knowledge and science which caused them to be eradicated.

Growing up on the other side of the world, my “understanding” of Africa has only ever come from a foreigners perspective. To hear these stories from Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa himself is absolutely crucial. It has opened my mind, heart and spirit in so many ways that there are not enough words to explain the enormity of how much I’ve learned about African customs, history and religious beliefs from this book. It’s not about just simply understanding or empathising, but to feel it deep in your soul!I highly recommend this book to the world!

A Great book to read
