5.0 out of 5 stars Simple and accessible work on Hadith

s. · October 21, 2015

Prof. Kamali has done a great service to the students of Islamic Studies by writing a very accessible book on Hadith (sayings of Prophet Muhammad). Unlike other books, which are usually heavy on difficult terminology and deep on the history of Hadith, this work assumes only basic knowledge of religious terms. It then approaches and explains the study of Hadith in a very organized and structured way.The reader is presented with topics which are logically laid out and have just enough examples to prove the point under consideration. In addition, the work explains the evolution of the science of Hadith in a manner which the reader will find very easy to understand. Most importantly, the last chapter identifies some gaps which are present in the field of Hadith and proposes modern research ideas which should be undertaken to cover these gaps. All in all, a very highly recommended work for all students of Hadith.

Dr. Mohammad Hashim Kamali wrote this book about the methodology, authenticity, history of the collection of hadith of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The writer says that " There are reports that during the latter part of his (Prophet) mission, that is, at a time when much of the Qur'anic text had already been documented, the Prophet responded positively to the request of some of his Companions to write his sayings. By the time when most of the Qur'an was received, memorized and documented, the Prophet permitted documentation of his Sunnah and addressed the companions to "preserve knowledge through writing." So the hadith was written during his life-time.

Covers almost every topic, without getting into too deep into anything. I've read several books on hadith and still walked away having learned some new things from this book! The question of the permissibility of writing ahadith is covered more than other books in a balanced and reasonable manner. Ibn Salah's work is used heavily which has made me decide to look into this classucal work.

Excellent Book on Uloomul Hadith

A.C. · July 15, 2016

Quite a detailed book, written brilliantly in a comprehensive manner for those people who are doing research in the field of Uloomul Hadith. I am still not finished with reading this book, however the one thing I found lacking is that Hashim Kamali has not delved into any details clarifying the difference between 'Hadith' and 'Sunnah' which work was brilliantly accomplished by Indo-Pakistani scholar Imam Amin Ahsan Islahi in his book 'Fundamentals of Hadith Interpretation'.
