Battle for the Falklands (1) : Land Forces (Men-At-Arms Series, 133)

Description:

On the night of 1–2 April 1982, the Argentinian Junta led by Gen. Leopoldo Galtieri made its move against the Falkland Islands. On 3 April British Prime Minister Mrs. Margaret Thatcher faced an appalled and furious House of Commons to announce that Argentine armed forces had landed on British sovereign territory; had captured the men of Royal Marine detachment NP8901; had run up the Argentine flag at Government House; and had declared the islands and their population to be Argentine. This absorbing text by William Fowler details the land forces that contested the Falklands War.

It does a good job in giving a quick history as to the origins of the conflict. It gives a handful of pictures of the actual conflict, but they are all black and white not color. The conflict happened in the early 80's, didn't anyone have color film in their camera? The illustrations are good. I was looking for a photo of a sniper with an enfield rifle, but they had 1 illustration of someone with a rifle that resembled an enfield.

This Osprey Men-At-Arms Series entry was first published shortly after the conclusion of the Falkland War; its narrative has all the breathlessness of new reporting and an admittedly incomplete story. Author William Fowler and illustrator Michael Chappell provide a concise but informative account of the Argentinian invasion of the British Overseas Possession of the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, followed by the swift and impressive British counterattack. The narrative opens with a quick introduction to the conflict and the opponents before proceeding in a chronological fashion through the fighting. The author is an unabashed supporter of the British side and the text reflects that, but this is a well put-together summary with a good effort at preliminary analysis of how an outnumbered force operating thousands of miles from home was successful, if at some cost. The text is accompanied by a nice selection of photographs and color illustrations. There is only one map, which shows only the key portion of the Falklands where most of the fighting took place. The conflict was a remarkable example of modern expeditionary warfare. Recommended to students of the military art.

It's a good book to get information about the Falklands Campaign, orders of battle, detailed equipment, forces involved and good pictures and plates. It is an excellent research. The problem is that it is almost completely focused on British Forces and their point of view (event about statistics. I think you must have it if you are interested in the last modern war fought between two Western countries for an old "colonial" adjustment...
