5.0 out of 5 stars Staggering: Both the images and photographer
Given all of the well-deserved praise and awards that Sebastian Copeland's THE ARCTIC has received, adding my lowly two cents feels like the proverbial carrying coals to Newcastle. That said, here goes. As a photographer with shelves full of photographers' books, THE ARCTIC stands out. Of course we expect to be wowed by such books; we also expect that there may be a few images that don't impact us as much as the others. But not this one. Not only is the subject unique, the ways Copeland reveals it takes my breath away. But then you have to stop and think about those images and how they were captured in such an unforgiving, threatening environment. Which brings us to the story of Sebastian Copeland. Imagine what it's like capturing them--these shots aren't waiting right outside our door. This guy is as dedicated and serious as his images are beautiful.
5.0 out of 5 stars A Dazzling Journey Through the Arctic
Sebastian Copeland's "The Arctic: A Darker Shade of White" is more than just a coffee table book; it's an immersive experience. Copeland, a renowned photographer, explorer, and environmental advocate, takes us on a breathtaking journey through the Arctic, capturing its stark beauty and fragile ecosystem in stunning detail. The book is a visual feast, filled with Copeland's award-winning photographs. From the ethereal landscapes of icebergs and glaciers to the haunting portraits of polar bears and other wildlife, each image is a testament to Copeland's artistry and his deep connection to the Arctic. But "The Arctic: A Darker Shade of White" is more than just beautiful pictures. Copeland also uses his photography to raise awareness about the threats facing the Arctic, including climate change and pollution. His images of melting glaciers and polluted waters serve as a stark reminder of the impact humans are having on this fragile ecosystem.
5.0 out of 5 stars A spectacular book from the 30 year iconic Polar Explorer Sebastian Copeland
A spectacular visual potrait of polar regions from the most acclaimed explorer of the modern age accompanied by an introduction by Jane Goodall. The Arctic: A Darker Shade Of White was just awarded the International Professional Photography Book of the Year for good reason. The images combined with Copeland's text paints a singular vision of a changing world and with caution and hope for the future.Highest recommendation. Impossible to ignore and a fabulous conversation is guaranteed.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent pictures from the Artic.
Beautiful photographs of a hard to reach world! Also a wake-up call what we might be loosing soon if we don't take more care about global warming ...
5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite book of 2024
The pics are so beautiful I suppose one should first look at those, but I instead became mesmerized by the text and the urgency of the message to protect this frontier being threatened by the greedy.
5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning and breathtaking images you must see!
The Arctic - A Darker Shade Of White honestly takes my breath away with the powerful silence it evokes with each photo. I highly recommend this book not only for the perfectly captured images but the message it has within the pages. Sebastian Copeland is an artist of photography who cares deeply about the story he tells and it resonates. Thank you for sharing this amazing journey!Nancy J Arntzen
Very happy about the book!
Sebastian's work is incredible!! Stunning artwork and big fan of the book. Can highly recommend for anyone - it's worth 10x the price.
Another beautiful book
Honestly one of the most gorgeous photography books. Sebastian just has such a good eye for a great photo- really capturing the majesty of these landscapes and immortalising them in a way we sadly may really need one day. :(
Beautiful and metaphysical, absolutely breathtaking book !
Sébastien Copeland's The Arctic: A Darker Shade of White is much more than a book; it's a veritable visual and educational immersion in the heart of the Arctic, this fragile jewel of our planet. From the very first pages, one is struck by the exceptional quality of the photographs: breathtaking icy landscapes, immortalized with rare mastery and sensitivity. Each image reveals a palette of shades of white and blue that seems almost unreal, and the precision of the printing magnifies every detail, offering a breathtaking visual experience.Beyond the beauty of the images, this book is distinguished by its educational scope. Copeland doesn't just capture the splendor of the Arctic; he also makes the reader aware of the urgent need to preserve this threatened ecosystem. The texts accompanying the images are both accessible and informative, making this a valuable work for younger generations. It invites reflection on our role in the face of climate change, while awakening a fascination for this often little-known region of the world. All in all, The Arctic: A Darker Shade of White is a visual masterpiece and a vibrant call to awareness. It's a book to give or to treat yourself to, as much for the pleasure of the eyes as for its rich educational content. A must-have for anyone wishing to marvel at and commit to our planet.
Genius photogrphy
Sebastian Copeland is a genius photographer and explorer. He is opening our eyes to the beauty of our world and the devastation of climate change.
Superb Arctic Book
This book completes Copeland's absolutely epic polar trilogy. The Arctic: A Darker Shade of White is an astonishing accomplishment that covers in details large and small the northern latitude, from Norway to Alaska, by way of the sea ice. There are many animal shots, but this is not what I would call a book of animals. It is much bigger than that, covering the subtle features and the mammoth landscapes with equal mastery. Copeland is unquestionably the preeminent shooter of the ice. And this trilogy eloquently makes that point. An absolute reference. A++
