With his unrivaled photography taken over 20 years of expeditions, including to the North Pole, Copeland transports us to the Arctic to share the heart of the polar cap as never before seen.

The Arctic is one of the last true wildernesses on the planet, and its demise should ring the alarm for lower latitudes. Copeland’s multifaceted background—not only a polar explorer, award-winning photographer, and established author and journalist but also a dedicated environmental advocate—offers us a unique vantage point from which to appreciate this lonely spot. Although the vision presented in these pages may be poetic, the book’s aims are pragmatic—to inspire and help foster a transformation toward a sustainable future.

The Arctic: A Darker Shade of White is a gateway into Copeland’s intrepid journeys as he takes us along and unveils some regions of the globe that had rarely—if ever—seen a footprint before. It is an intimate and visually arresting ode to the human pursuit of exploration inside Nature’s most remote and otherworldly theater.

About the Author

With approximately 6,000 miles under his skis in the polar regions, Sebastian Copeland has led numerous expeditions to the North and South Poles on foot. Noted as a photographer “who has produced works that are of outstanding artistic merit and communicate messages of urgent global significance,” Copeland has addressed audiences at the UN, universities, and many Fortune 500 companies to warn of the systemic transformations taking place in the polar regions and their geopolitical consequences. In 2017, Men’s Journal named Copeland one of 25 of the world’s top adventurers of the last 25 years. The Arctic completes a polar trilogy comprising Antarctica: The Waking Giant (2020) and Polar Explorations (2022). Copeland was named four times Photographer of the Year. In 2019, he was knighted by French President Emmanuel Macron in the National Order of Merit; and the National Order of Arts and Letters. Dr. Jane Goodall, known for her landmark chimpanzee study, is the most recognizable figure in conservation today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Staggering: Both the images and photographer

R. · April 7, 2025

Given all of the well-deserved praise and awards that Sebastian Copeland's THE ARCTIC has received, adding my lowly two cents feels like the proverbial carrying coals to Newcastle. That said, here goes. As a photographer with shelves full of photographers' books, THE ARCTIC stands out. Of course we expect to be wowed by such books; we also expect that there may be a few images that don't impact us as much as the others. But not this one. Not only is the subject unique, the ways Copeland reveals it takes my breath away. But then you have to stop and think about those images and how they were captured in such an unforgiving, threatening environment. Which brings us to the story of Sebastian Copeland. Imagine what it's like capturing them--these shots aren't waiting right outside our door. This guy is as dedicated and serious as his images are beautiful.

Honestly one of the most gorgeous photography books. Sebastian just has such a good eye for a great photo- really capturing the majesty of these landscapes and immortalising them in a way we sadly may really need one day. :(

Beautiful and metaphysical, absolutely breathtaking book !

Sébastien Copeland's The Arctic: A Darker Shade of White is much more than a book; it's a veritable visual and educational immersion in the heart of the Arctic, this fragile jewel of our planet. From the very first pages, one is struck by the exceptional quality of the photographs: breathtaking icy landscapes, immortalized with rare mastery and sensitivity. Each image reveals a palette of shades of white and blue that seems almost unreal, and the precision of the printing magnifies every detail, offering a breathtaking visual experience.Beyond the beauty of the images, this book is distinguished by its educational scope. Copeland doesn't just capture the splendor of the Arctic; he also makes the reader aware of the urgent need to preserve this threatened ecosystem. The texts accompanying the images are both accessible and informative, making this a valuable work for younger generations. It invites reflection on our role in the face of climate change, while awakening a fascination for this often little-known region of the world. All in all, The Arctic: A Darker Shade of White is a visual masterpiece and a vibrant call to awareness. It's a book to give or to treat yourself to, as much for the pleasure of the eyes as for its rich educational content. A must-have for anyone wishing to marvel at and commit to our planet.

Superb Arctic Book

S.C. · October 11, 2024

This book completes Copeland's absolutely epic polar trilogy. The Arctic: A Darker Shade of White is an astonishing accomplishment that covers in details large and small the northern latitude, from Norway to Alaska, by way of the sea ice. There are many animal shots, but this is not what I would call a book of animals. It is much bigger than that, covering the subtle features and the mammoth landscapes with equal mastery. Copeland is unquestionably the preeminent shooter of the ice. And this trilogy eloquently makes that point. An absolute reference. A++
