Families

Description:

Big or small, similar or different-looking, there are all kinds of families.

Celebrate diversity with this picture book for very young children about the many faces of contemporary families. Bright photographs by National Geographic photographer Shelley Rotner capture families having fun together, enjoying all the ways they are similar and different.

Some families have one parent, and some have two; some have aunts and uncles and grandparents living with them. Some have adopted children, some have children born to them. Whether they live all together or far apart, families love and care for each other.

Designed to showcase the wide variety of modern families and spur discussions about young readers' own family history, this beautiful picture book is a must-have for children beginning to learn about the world and the people around them.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Families is truly a celebration of diversity. . . . [It] should find a place in day-care centers, preschools, libraries, and homes, as it provides adults with a vehicle to address the beauty of difference before youngsters begin to think it is a problem."—Booklist

"Vibrant photographs—especially action shots—will capture children's attention, build language skills, and, one hopes, start conversations."—
Kirkus Reviews

"Winsome, clear photographs are accompanied by brief, large-font text. This celebration of differences is further enhanced by the inclusion of women in head scarves, a dad in a wheelchair, and multigenerational groupings. . . . A great way to introduce the concept of diversity among families."—
School Library Journal

"This book emphasizes the importance of a strong family narrative formed through conversations between family members across generational lines. Illustrating the book with Rotner's always-amiable color photographs of families . . . strengthens this emphasis and showcases the diversity of experiences in contemporary family structures."—

5.0 out of 5 stars Culturally Diverse Family Book!

A. · June 25, 2018

This is an amazing book that highlights families of all kind. I love that there is page after page of families that look like my own and DON'T look like my own so that my child can see families that are all different. The photographs are beautiful and I love that they were able to incorporate families from all cultures, races, and sexes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Every young child should read this

A.C. · February 24, 2020

I am so happy someone wrote this book! I am an only parent and my son gets very upset when other kids throw in his face that he “doesn’t have a dad.” He didn’t even want to read the book when he saw it said families. But once we started reading, and he saw a picture showing just One parent and a child, he smiled big, pointed and said, “they have a picture that’s the family I have!” Fabulous to reassure children and show them they are Not different in a bad way, it’s not a bad thing. And so good to educate other children that different isn’t bad! It’s a very simple book, could have a little more to it but I am very happy it exists. It would be great if teachers shared it in their kindergarten/1st grade rooms!

The words aren't all small kid friendly so I think the adult has to read it. Good conversation starter and mind expander. My niece liked it and learned a lot.
