The Young Adult Playbook: Living Like It Matters

Description:

The Young Adult Playbook goes where other life design books refuse to go: it asks deep questions about what constitutes a happy life. After decades of listening to their students, Anna Moreland and Thomas Smith name the underlying desires in young adults: while searching for a lucrative career, they long for meaningful work; their social media and gaming practices point to a deeper yearning for intimacy; and their leisure habits have been crushed under the productivity machine. This book helps them unlock their deepest desires. It offers practical strategies to improve habits. And it leads them to recover activities lost from childhood. The book is threaded with the real voices of young adults who have found their way out of this rough terrain. These offer much needed models of hope, providing a concrete map through unprecedented challenges. Journal exercises throughout the chapters tailor the strategies for each individual reader.

Plenty of books diagnose the ills of this digital age. Few offer a pathway out of these challenges. As caring and effective college professors, Moreland and Smith have spent decades rescuing students from this impoverished landscape. In this book they attempt to reach the students they can't teach.

Review

"Growing up has never felt more fraught. Options seem endless but each choice carries weight; no one dares give advice and role models are thin on the ground. Luckily, Anna Moreland and Thomas W. Smith are willing to step into the breach ― The Young Adult Playbook is warm and wise; its advice is straightforward and actionable. This is the book I wish I'd read before graduation."―Christine Emba, author of Rethinking Sex: A Provocation and columnist at The Atlantic

"Do you want to find meaning at work and escape the 'achievement trap'? To reclaim rest amidst our culture's obsession with busyness? To build relationships that lead to deep friendships and perhaps even to love?
The Young Adult Playbook can help. With engaging insights, imaginative exercises, and the realistic counsel of wise and caring teachers, Anna B. Moreland and Thomas W. Smith offer valuable advice for young adults seeking a life of meaning and purpose."―Michael Lamb, F.M. Kirby Foundation Chair of Leadership and Character, Wake Forest University

"Success. Happiness. Love. Every young person wants these things, and for generations, innumerable self-help manuals have promised to deliver, only to fail spectacularly. Far from a problem of overreach, however, the genre actually suffers from an acute failure of nerve. Too many such tomes promise to coach budding adults on effective procedural behavior, without ever having the courage to articulate a substantive vision of what success actually means. While this tendency may have been emblematic of a zeitgeist that prized subjectivity
uber alles, things are changing for today's youth. The new generation is hungry for purpose―for all the habits of highly effective people to mean something. They will find their answer in the Young Adult Playbook, a superb, genre-defining book that articulates not only the how, but the what and the why for living a life that is both great and good"―Rabbi Dr. Ari Lamm, co-founder and President of SoulShop Studio

"In university now and, as far into the future as we can see, college-aged students are presented with an array of bewildering features. COVID took its toll on their social development. They are addicted to their phones, fearful of missing something. They admit to being lonely, unsure, and find it difficult to discipline themselves to come regularly to even those things they enjoy or feel responsible for. GPS tells them how to get from A to B, but they don't know where to start or where to drop the pin. They need a road map, an old-fashioned guide for making decisions about the journey ahead. This book tells them how to prepare for and follow a road map, a journey of their own creation. The explicit message is 'we believe in you.' An implicit assumption is that a faith tradition can be an invaluable companion on this pilgrimage."―Michael J. Garanzini, SJ, President, Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities

"In this engaging guide, readers will find out how to live like it matters, and they'll find out why it absolutely, positively does."―Meg Jay, author of
The Twentysomething Treatment and The Defining Decade

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic, Must-Read

J.W. · October 22, 2024

This book is a classic and deserves as wide a readership as possible, not only among the intended audience of young adults, but also among those who care for them such as parents, teachers, and other mentors. Though the book is supremely well-informed, it's at the service of guiding the reader, with a language that is frank and accessible and a tone that is unfailingly encouraging. The book is punctuated with journal exercises whose reorientation of your way of thinking you can feel (Journal Exercise #3 is a favorite). Engaging with them, taking them seriously makes an already rich experience all the richer by helping the reading take root.Reading the book has obvious immediate benefits, but inasmuch as the book discusses the nature of work, leisure, or romance, it can serve as a kind of reference to remind readers again as needed what these features of life are really about. Coupled with the journal entries, I imagine a later read could recenter readers on who they are and what direction they truly would like to go, whether still navigating young adulthood or some time further out.In short, this book provides a true education especially tailored for young adults. It is not an overstatement to say that this book can - and will - change lives. Though they cannot be guaranteed, this book nevertheless challenges you to acknowledge your hopes and dreams - to acknowledge yourself - and provides a loving impetus to reach after them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must for all young adults!

K.W. · September 30, 2024

I will be using this book as a guide to young adult life. It’s an easy read, relatable, and incredibly impactful. It’s nice knowing our struggles and tendencies are not unique to us, but an entire generation. The three sections (work, leisure, and relationships) are all incredibly crafted. This book articulated my own feelings and experiences better than I ever could, all while offering solutions and exercises for improvement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource

m.s.s. · January 12, 2025

This is a wonderful resource for young adults and the people who love them or work with them. In a society that emphasizes vigorous standards for learning, there is a notable gap in educating our youth regarding how to have a meaningful and happy life. This is a common sense manual that gives them tools to evaluate and align their actions towards that goal. It touches on three main realms of living: work, leisure, and love. The scenarios used are from college students, but the information is transferable to high school students or those still seeking authentic meaning beyond their schooling years. This book makes an admirable attempt to wrest control of defining meaning in life away from the snaptok facegram powers that be and empower young adults to create their individual path to happiness.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book of great value-highly recommend!

K.K. · September 29, 2024

Anna Moreland and Tom Smith have written an outstanding guide for young people. The Young Adult Playbook is rich with wisdom from ancient thinkers to modern psychologists, real stories from college students and their own keen insights from decades of accompanying young adults. It is brought together in a warm, very accessible read that beautifully empowers and gives hope. They talk about what matters—our work, our free time, our relationships—in a deeply good and impactful way that challenges the current narratives young people are fed while gently suggesting another way. I highly recommend this book to anyone, but especially high schoolers preparing for the next step, college students in the midst of it, and post grads who might be stuck and questioning without anywhere to turn. This is also a worthwhile read for parents and mentors who want to better understand the unique struggles of young people today and receive language and a framework to move forward in a helpful manner. I have already shared this book with someone who works on a college campus and mentors students, as well as a 30-something who may benefit from pondering a different approach to finding love. It’s too good not to share!

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Learning from Professor Moreland, a Decade Later

S.D.K. · September 28, 2024

In a world where many young adults are left adrift in the tides of moral relativism, this book offers a much-needed compass. Professors Moreland and Smith boldly teach what it means to pursue a Good Life. Having studied under Professor Moreland, I can personally attest to her lasting influence. This book helped guide me through a recent, pivotal career decision. It is a playbook for young adults and indeed anyone wishing to live with greater purpose. Many thanks Professors!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional book. Must-read for college students.

C.K. · September 27, 2024

Professors Smith and Moreland have created an inspiring, informative must-read book for all college students. They skillfully and adeptly blend stories, research, and action steps to make the most out of college and life. This was a joy to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for young adults and their parents

C.M. · November 8, 2024

I read it first before gifting a copy to the college student in my family. Professors Moreland and Smith communicate clearly about problems that many young adults face, with practical ways to approach those issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great way to find the questions that matter!

J.M. · November 9, 2024

And find the answers that matter to you. College students and young adults are so concerned with the right now or the next internship or research project they don’t think about the big picture of their lives. A love life and a social life are important too! I’ve worried about loneliness of Gen Z since my kids were home during covid, and this book gives some perspective that is useful to them. This was recommended to me by a parent at my son’s school and I read it before I gave it to him. It makes for interesting car rides!
