Victorian Housecats to Knit

Description:

Welcome to the Morgan family home! Let me give you a tour. Each room in this Victorian household has a special purpose and is favored by a unique feline inhabitant. From the cuddly and adorable Nursery Kittens to Aunt Pru’s Persian, there's a tale behind each kitty companion—and a family member who loves them. From the Cook's Cat to Grandad's Silver Tabby, the Morgans' cats will capture your heart, and the knitting pattern for each will have your needles flying.

There are 20 cats in all, with complete instructions to knit each one. Most of the patterns in this book have sections which are worked flat and sections which are worked in the round, so your attention will always be held. A few of them are geared toward the beginner, with shaping achieved by simple increasing and decreasing. Others are more challenging, but even these will be easily accomplished if undertaken with an adventurous spirit. The Morgans and their kitties are sure to delight all cat-loving knitters!

Designer Kellner (Knits for Kitties) blends nature guide with knitting know-how in this fun collection of stuffed animal knits for seasoned crafters. ― Publishers Weekly

This is a lovely blend of science and craft. Recommended for most public libraries. ―
Library Journal

I can practically hear them purring!

This book is the ultimate in coziness: a collection of knitting patterns for different kitties, each one inhabiting their ideal space in a Victorian dream home. From the contented parlour cat snoozing by the fire, to the plump cook's cat lapping up the last drop from her dish, these cats bring life to the scenes around them. I was especially impressed by how Ms. Kellner managed to translate the vitality of cats into her knitted creations. The stretching porch cat is so clearly getting ready to yawn that I found myself following suit! Kellner also has some brilliant tricks for capturing color changes on calicos and tabbies; these details really add to a cat's individuality as well as their personality. For cat class and Victorian style, you'll love this book! -- Sarah A Chrisman, author of Tales of Chetzemoka and founder of This Victorian Life

The human backstories imbue what would otherwise be a fairly straightforward knitting guide with a healthy dose of personality, and photos of the plush cats amid Victorian decor help sell the vintage feel. This will make a worthy addition to any crafter’s shelf. ―
Publishers Weekly

This book will appeal to cat-loving knitters and history buffs alike.
Favourite makes include the sleeping Library Cat and Aunt Pru’s Persian with her fluffy coat and fancy collar, and, as my own cat spends most of her waking hours sitting on the windowsill, I have a soft spot for the watchful Window Cat. ―

“You may perhaps remember a book review of Wild and Woolly Knitted Animals that we featured in our November 2022 newsletter. Well, the author of that book is back with another compilation of animal patterns, this time a collection of adorable cats in various poses. … I predict that anyone who loves cats will be captivated by this sweet book.” ―

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! Adorable cats!

C. · October 17, 2025

This book is just lovely. I love the stories behind each of the cats and can't wait to make some.

5.0 out of 5 stars Feline stories and patterns with a lot of pictures and well explained patterns

p.j.o. · August 6, 2025

By far the sweetest book I have ever used for knitting! The patterns are accompanied by a storyline, a Victorian family who has a cat assigned to every room. Each room tells its cat story and then the pattern for the protagonist. There is a parlor cat, a kitchen cat, even a mama cat with her kittens and she is able to pose as if nursing! Well done! And fun😍

5.0 out of 5 stars Really lovely book for any cat-loving knitters! Thoroughly enjoying it.

m. · December 12, 2024

Such a lovely book - I'd recommend wholeheartedly, particularly if you need a gift for a knitter (at any level) who loves cats. Many different cats to knit, each in different postures, and many photo examples of each cat in different color schemes. I got this recently so haven't knit the cats yet, but, flipping through the patterns, there is a good balance of different difficulty levels and scale of project (some are smaller cats that you could knit up quite quickly) - Could see this being a great book for any cat-loving knitter, even for newer knitters. Also have to mention that the book itself is clearly lovingly done - A sweet story for each cat, and a running Victorian theme (complete with nice illustrations) throughout.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining book

Adorable knitting patterns. Fun to look at even if you aren't a knitter. I bought it for a couple patterns for miniature kittens - that can be used in a dollhouse

5.0 out of 5 stars I know I’m going to love it

A.L. · November 16, 2024

I just bought this book, but the instructions look very clear and easy to understand. I love the fact that the cats are posed and have already picked out the first two that I’ll be making. I’m so sure I’m going to love these patterns that I went back and bought Ms. Kellner’s previously published Wild and Woolly Knitted Animals so I can find other animals to make. An excellent resource for anyone wanting to make knitted cats.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, could use clearer photos

J.S. · December 19, 2024

This is a clever book of adorable knitting patterns. The patterns are clearly written and straightforward to follow. The “Victorian” theme makes for a lovely cover, although the cats on their own are classic and timeless. My only criticism is of the book design: the project photos are limited and reproduced quite small, not one is printed on the page larger than a half-page. I handed the book to a friend who paged well into it before even finding a photo of a knitted cat project, to understand what the book was for. Some clear, large, full-page project photos would be helpful to be able to see the details of the knitting up close, and help the visual learners among us interpret the patterns. The window cat, for example, offers directions to make “paws” but it’s difficult to make out any paws in the photos, leaving it a guess about how to join or position them. Sharp, well-lit photos would be invaluable for showing the shaping and finishing of the patterns.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, amazing knitted cat patterns.

G. · April 18, 2025

A friend of mine has completed 4 different of these designs, and she's the reason I bought the book.I hope to knit a few myself. There is no shortage of adorable cats in this book. I have my favorite selectedI need to finish a few of my works in progress then get started.

5.0 out of 5 stars It’s amazing

J.T. · March 13, 2025

This book is amazing! I bought it for one pattern that I saw in the preview but found so many that I love. However, the best part of this book is the design. It is so much fun to read. Pure genius!

Super cute!

K. · December 4, 2024

This book is adorable from cover to cover! The quality of the book itself is excellent with a well made cover and good paper. The contents live up to the cover with it's wonderful themed graphics, which continue throughout. The designs are very cute, and they look like actual cats and the poses they love to take. (This cannot be said for all knitted cat books.) I'll update once I knit more of the cats, but right now the patterns look well written and easy to follow!

Lovely book with lots of pictures, stories and options.

P. · February 8, 2025

It is so hard to choose which one to start with, there are 20 options! The instructions look clear and easy to follow with stitch counts at the end of rows so you can check and adjust if necessary. I suspect there will be more than one housecat in my life as soon as I can decide on one to start.

Lovely designs. Just more complicated than expected

j. · April 5, 2025

Really like most of the designs. One i, m knitting now more complicated than expected. Needed pictures of how it was knitted and stitched together

Lovely book!
