Professional Capital: Transforming Teaching in Every School

Description:

2014 Winner of The Grawemeyer Award in Education

The future of learning depends absolutely on the future of teaching. In this latest and most important collaboration, Andy Hargreaves and Michael Fullan show how the quality of teaching is captured in a compelling new idea: the professional capital of every teacher working together in every school. Speaking out against policies that result in a teaching force that is inexperienced, inexpensive, and exhausted in short order, these two world authorities―who know teaching and leadership inside out―set out a groundbreaking new agenda to transform the future of teaching and public education.

Ideas-driven, evidence-based, and strategically powerful, Professional Capital combats the tired arguments and stereotypes of teachers and teaching and shows us how to change them by demanding more of the teaching profession and more from the systems that support it. This is a book that no one connected with schools can afford to ignore.

Book Features:

  • A powerful and practical solution to what ails American schools.
  • Action guidelines for all groups―individual teachers, administrators, schools and districts, state and federal leaders.
  • A next-generation update of core themes from the authors’ bestselling book, What’s Worth Fighting for in Your School?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for politicians, school leaders and teachers

C.D. · April 3, 2013

"Professional Capital" is A Must Read book on school reforms, change of teaching and learning cultures and classroom implementation of educational policies as wished by politicians, school leaders, teachers, students and parents. It is surprisingly sharp in its critique of politicians' search for quick measurable results, and it is equally solidly founded in presenting evidence and suggestions for a sustainable development of school cultures that will guarantee continuos improvement of institutionalised learning - the idea is the professional capital of collaborative teaching and learning.

I'm the Chief Academic Officer of a small CA charter organization and this book has been really helpful for me to ground our work in Hargreaves and Fullan's deep analysis. Along with Fullan's other books, "The Principal" and "Deep Learning", it is helping us to better articulate our strategy going forward as it really resonates with our Core Pedagogical Beliefs. I appreciate the use of evidence and extensive research from the US, Canada, England, and Australia that is included in the text and footnotes. In addition, it isn't about quick fixes or silver bullets but rather based on the work of coherently building everyone's capacity in an organization support all student learning at their maximum capacity. It has changed my practice for the better.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for administrators working in faculty professional development.

t. · December 12, 2015

One of the truly great books on faculty professional development out there. Data-based, but as the authors themselves say, not data-driven.If you're following PISA, paying attention to the Finland-gap in education (i.e., between them and the rest of us), this is a great how-to and well worth the read all the way through. While primarily targeted towards public schools, is entirely applicable to private schools, parochial, Waldorf, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Professional Capital - Continuing the good work

C.P. · May 22, 2013

Having recently read quite a number of articles from both Hargreaves and Fullan, dating back to the 1990's, Professional Capital built on their earlier work and extended it. It's a very easy read and educators at all levels will relate to it and will be challenged by it. It speaks directly to teachers, school and district/system leaders as well as State, National and International organisations. Professional Capital is what we've come to expect of Hargreaves and Fullan, and more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Leading the way

T.P. · December 4, 2012

Professional Capital is just what teaching needs at this time--a solid look at practices and ideas that really will increase student learning. With near unanimous agreement in the failure of No Child Left Behind, the time is ripe for ideas that will truly improve education. Unfortunately, much of what passes for education reform doesn't meet the standard set by Hargreaves and Fullan in this excellent book. I highly recommend this book as a template for change in our schools.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very informative

This book provides very clearly stated introduction to the concept of professional capital and its realtion to teachers. Based on social, human, and decision all capital, professional capital is a concept that must be considered by educators as we move forward in this new era of increased accountability a great read overall.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read for Educators and Voters

All school districts should adopt the principles that were expressed within this text. As a school administration, I will definitely adopt the portion of the text that explain why it is important to build as many relationships within the entire school community.

A. · July 28, 2014

Hargreaves and Fullan present a very interesting approach to reforming education that moves past current top down initiatives such as standardization and competitive accountability and advocates for the development of human, social and decisional capital. Such a reform movement promises to reinstate professional autonomy, dignity and strength to a profession that has suffered degradation in the struggle for 'control of education' by parties far removed from its best interests.
