5.0 out of 5 stars More than the Typical Teddy Bear Story--Much More

J.C. · March 20, 2013

The title is somewhat "deceptive" in that a child (or group of children) may think this is a book only aimed at ages three through six. But they will soon discover differently: Eight-year-olds are absorbed by the unwritten message the story leaves. Most will see another side of life that a homeless man witnesses, yet feel the commonality of a shared affection: The love for a teddy bear and the imagined (real?) companionship from it. Altruism, also, is shown by the young boy as he learns to empathize with someone so different from himself. When read to urban children a number often share their experience with a homeless child or adult. A moving story that shows both ambivalence, empathy and deep emotion. It is definitely a read-aloud and a read-alone--and can be read in less than 8 minutes, but an interactive discussion may take more time.Fanciful/Realistic Fiction: Grades K-3The Creative Teacher: Activities for Language Arts (Grades 4 through 8 and Up)

This story is so unique and wonderful. I used to teach preschool. I highly recommend this story. It’s not too lengthy and just right for 3 to 6 year olds. Children need stories that teach love, kindness and empathy that are engaging and do not preach or lecture. This one is just that! Illustrations are beautiful as well!

This book is a keeper! The story was very uplifting and quietly demonstrated the power of giving. The illustrations are beautiful and part of the reason I was initially attracted to the book. My grandchildren and I loved it.

An amazing story about kindness. A guaranteed tear jerker! The Teddy Bear is a story about a boy and his beloved bear. He takes his bear everywhere with him and one day he looses him at a restaurant. After coming back to look for him hours later, the boy is unable to find him. Discarded and lonely the bear finds himself in a homeless man’s long green coat pocket. As the bear begins his new life he starts to enjoy the man more. One day the little boy is walking through a park which just so happens to be the same park where the man puts the bear onto a bench and walks away to look for something. The little boy sees his beloved bear and immediately embraces him. As the boy is walking away he hears the old man wailing about his lost bear. The next few pages brought tears to my eyes when I first read it. I’m not going to giveaway the ending because it’s that wonderful, you’ll have to read it on your own. After reading this one tonight to my five year old he shared some big feelings about how hard saying goodbyes are, kindness and love. This one will pull at your heart strings!

The first time I read this book I was completely blown away that someone would write a book for children that conveyed principles that every human should possess; compassion, thankfulness for our abundance, mercy, and most of all generosity. It is a blessing to be able to read a book to children that they enjoy and though which they can learn these very important truths that they will carry with them throughout their lives. Thank you David McPhail for writing this book. I love it.

This is a beautifully written story, and one that teaches kindness and compassion. It can be read in less than two minutes, but you will want to linger over the illustrations a little longer, and you will certainly want to discuss it afterwards. It is my favorite book for small children.

A small boy, happily situated in his life with loving parents, forgets his beloved teddy bear on a park bench. The child is unable to retrieve his bear, and mourns his loss. The bear, however, is not entirely lost: a lonely, homeless man, has found the bear and feels it is meant for him. It becomes his best companion and dear friend. When the child finally does discover the bear the man appears and also claims it. The child's wise decision demonstrates compassion, kindness, and a way to pass on love and happiness.
