A Super Upsetting Cookbook About Sandwiches

Description:

“Tyler and his approach to sandwiches are equal parts clever, hilarious, and deeply dirty (in all the right ways). I’m obsessed with the never-ending possibility of what a sandwich can be, and so I’m a supreme fan girl of everything that Tyler and his crazy mind inserts between these pages and two pieces of bread.” —Christina Tosi

Known genius and broccoli savant Tyler Kord is chef-owner of the lauded No. 7 Sub shops in New York. He is also a fabulously neurotic man who directs his energy into ruminations on sandwich philosophy, love, self-loathing, pay phones, getting drunk in the shower, Tom Cruise, food ethics, and what it's like having  the names of two different women tattooed on your body.

But being a chef means that it's your job to make people happy, and so, to thank you for being there while he works out his issues, he offers you this collection of truly excellent recipes, like roast beef with crispy shallots and smoky French dressing, a mind-blowing mayonnaise that tastes exactly like pho, or so many ways to make vegetables into sandiwches that you may never eat salad again.
A Super Upsetting Cookbook About Sandwiches will make you laugh, make you cry, and most of all, make you hungry.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Only Tyler could put together a sandwich with the seemingly insane combination of roasted broccoli, lychee, and ricotta salata, and have it be so delicious! This very talented cook will take you on a intergalactic voyage.” —Jean-Georges Vongerichten

“I’ve always said that if you want white people to understand your culture, you should put it on bread. In the tradition of pairing the “other” with simple carbohydrates, Tyler Kord has written a book about sandwiches so that finally white people may understand the culture of self-hating, neurotic, New York chefs.” —
Eddie Huang

"It's the best sandwich cookbook I've ever come across… The super-upsetting part finds Tyler drinking in showers, crying in bathrooms, and going ballistic on overrated lobster rolls. But it's all in good fun. What's not upsetting are the recipes. They're the exact opposite, in fact… There are hilarious essays and photo gallery–quality artwork. And then there's just Tyler himself. Writing in his own unique voice, making his own unique sandwiches, being the kind of chef that I've always liked."
Keith Pandolfi, Serious Eats

"Sometimes, not often, a cookbook shows up that you grab immediately, no questions asked, and start to read. The new book by Tyler Kord is one of those...an essay-ish cookbook that reads like a very funny blog — back when blogs were neurotic, first-person diatribes about stuff the author actually knew something about — crossed with a YA book that both you and your teenager enjoyed reading. You will be entertained. You will learn how to make Canadian bacon from scratch. The author got an BA in English from Oberlin before he worked for Jean-Georges Vongerichten, which in this case turns out to be as good a combo as that broccoli, ricotta salata and lychee sandwich."
--Amy Scattergood, Los Angeles Times

“In a world saturated by cookbooks that are often so similar or forced, this one was authentically itself. The overall message is perhaps familiar: eat more plants, pay attention to where your food comes from, put some effort into the things you do, everything in moderation. But rather than coming from an author who projects wellness and righteousness, as seems so often the case, this message is coming in the form of delicious, drippy sandwiches from someone who is hilariously self-deprecating.”--

Seriously loving my new cookbook "The Super Upsetting Cookbook about Sandwiches". It's the most hilarious cookbook I've ever read and I own 'Thug Kitchen'. Tyler Cord is witty, sarcastic, and fun and I'm reading this cookbook likes it's an actual novel! That's how much fun it is!!Look just read this tiny excerpt from his roasted chicken section:"that being said we're going to shred this bird and put it on a stupid sandwich, so let's accept whole-bird cookery." Then he gives the MOST BASIC roasted chicken recipe. Literally it's two ingredients and an oven temp. and then he says; "if you'd like a more detailed recipe for roasted chicken maybe read a better book than this one."As a book blogger I don't normally write reviews for cookbooks. Oh, I collect cookbooks, it's like my secret obsessions that very few people actually know about me, but I've never felt the need or the motivation to write a review for one. Cooking is my hobby and I love to get a new cookbook and then cook my way through it. My family loves this as well but I digress. This cookbook is so much more than a cookbook about sandwiches! It does what no other cookbook has managed to do successfully, and that's marry recipes and cooking with actual prose that you WANT TO READ!'The Super Upsetting Cookbook about Sandwiches" reads like witty, sarcastic, hilarious novel while at the same time imparting sandwich knowledge that makes you want to live in the kitchen recreating every one of these recipes even the pickled mushrooms (I was skeptical about the mushrooms) and then invite all your friends and co-workers over to eat sandwiches! So Tyler Cord my hats off to you on this amazing cook book and on doing what no one before you has managed to do and that's get this book blogger and reviewer to submit five stars on a review! Thanks for the fun and the sandwiches!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! Such fun!

Never have I ever read a cookbook from start to finish until now. This was such snarky fun! The recipes are dead on with easy instructions and the stories are hilarious. My family loves the Don't Cry for me Argentina sandwich and I can't get enough of the roasted broccoli sandwich. Yes, it is a long way to go for some sandwiches but if you like messing around in the kitchen for an afternoon this is for you. The double fried shallots are worth the entire cost of the book. We put them on everything - and in scrambled eggs they are brilliant. This is now my go to gift for foodie girlfriends. I so wish my other cookbooks were this much fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best cookbook I've read

S. · August 12, 2016

I bought this cookbook after reading about it on Spledid Table. It sounded interesting, but it was the title that did it for me--it's a good one. And I like cookbooks, of course. But this might be the best cookbook I've ever read.I haven't even made anything yet, but the book itself is seriously entertaining. It's also very thoughtful and even intimate at times. Unlike any other cookbook I've read, really, and I've read quite a few.I skipped the meat recipes at first because I am vegan, but ended up going back and reading each one of those too once I realized how funny and thoughtful the book actually was. The recipes look great too--especially the veggie spreads, pickles, sauces, and other condiments. Those are very versatile, so it's not just sandwiches. I would recommend this book to anyone, even people that don't normally cook or read cookbooks, and especially novegetarians.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is totally ridiculous in all the best ways. As a cookbook

K. · July 21, 2016

This book is totally ridiculous in all the best ways. As a cookbook, it's clear and user-friendly, and the recipes while geared toward sandwiches, are weird and fun and versatile - I can any and all of these components over and over and never make a sandwich. I love that. But more than anything, this book is a great read - It's sweet and and thoughtful and weird, smart and engaging and hilarious.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good recipes, amusing

I got this for my son's 19th birthday. He's interested in learning more about cooking, and he loves sandwiches. He's made the family several of the sandwiches in this book already, and they were all spectacular, although also super-upsetting.

3.0 out of 5 stars Meh!

B. · July 15, 2016

Some of the sandwich recipes sound good, but the ingredients are not exactly household items. I read a book review that described this book as a very funny read. The best I got was a smile. Don't think I would bother reading it if I had foreknowledge of its content.

Imprescindible en la biblioteca de un freak de los bocadillos. Mezclas inimaginables y con un toque de humor que ameniza la lectura (pues sí, aunque sea un libro de recetas, se lee y se disfruta)

Fantastic all across the board

Tolles Kochbuch

D.W. · June 7, 2017

Aktuell mein liebstes Kochbuch.
