Review

"This is a magnificent book, so packed with lore and legend that one is not conscious of the fact that it is history, too. Frank Dobie tells the story of the mustangs . . . The story too of the men, and the way of life the mustang brought into being."—New York Herald Tribune

"Mr. Dobie brings together all his findings in a single book of solid scholarship, documented to the hilt, and inspired by his unflagging enthusiasm for the wild free creatures of the West.
The Mustangs will probably remain the standard work on the subject."—New York Times

5.0 out of 5 stars Their origins and contributions to the early development of Nort America

t.l. · November 11, 2019

In many small restaurants down in South Texas they gather - at their table - groups of old timers who have spent their lives amid horses and cows. They gather each morning shortly after sunup amid the smell of biscuits, ham and bacon frying intermingled with the smell of strong coffee brewing. There they sit - as they have for untold years - as did their fathers and grandfathers before them - telling and re-telling the same old stories! That is where J. Frank Dobie developed his skills as a "darn good yarn spinner."A compliment of the highest order that can be bestowed on one by such a "jury of peers"!In the Mustangs - He did it again! Not only the well researched background information that causes this book to not only be a "darn good yarn" but a valuable documentary as well.Fortunately Dobie started the book at a time when many of the "stove up old coogers" who worked among and around the mustangs were still able to - through Dobie's narrative - pass on firsthand accounts of those remarkable animals "The Wild and Free" mustangs of yesteryear. After reading the book I wished I would have had the opportunity to match wits with the "Pacing White Stallion" that no one was ever able to capture.Dobie's account of the Mustangs is a good read that creates a picture of a bygone era in our country that must have been a sight to behold and a time when only the strong survived - I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Historical Summary of Impact of Horses on the West

A.C. · September 10, 1999

Dobie tells the story of the impact that the introduction of the horse had on life in the Americas, with an emphasis on the American West. His historical research is good, citing a number of written sources (and even giving new perspective on Fremont or Pike). But the real color of the book comes from his anecdotes, many of which come from discussions with cowboys and mustangers who lived through the final days of the open range in the American West. Great color, great stories throughout!Highly entertaining, yet with good research and historical value. Wonderful insight into the character of horses.

Just what I was needing as a supplimental source for my trilogy on early Texas history. Great detail, well documented, not an easy read akin to a reference book.

I'm only about 1/5 of the way through this book, and I'm learning tons. Even though this is an older book, the information is still pertinent, well written, and detailed. If you love American history, this is a great book!
