“We have been in vocational ministry for over forty years and have never seen a rise in loneliness like today. The ache in people’s souls has jumped dramatically since the pandemic. And no one seems to be talking about an answer to this ache until now. In this book, Steve will take you on a journey through his battle with loneliness that you will relate to, but you will also find a God who meets us right in the middle of this loneliness. We’ve never heard a pastor speak or write so honestly about this struggle, but Steve goes there. And we mean, really goes there. And he will take you there as well. And you will find healing just as he did. Buckle up because God is about to meet you right where you are. It’s a journey we all need to take”
—DAVE & ANN WILSON, cohosts of FamilyLife Today
“This book is badly needed. Due to changes in the way we work and worship, we are more isolated than ever. Indeed, loneliness has become a pandemic. But Steve DeWitt knows that the loneliness we all feel is also an opportunity for us to experience God’s grace in life-giving ways. In this wise, practical, and hope-filled book, he shows us how to see our loneliness in gospel perspective and respond in ways that bring health and healing.”
—PHILIP RYKEN, President, Wheaton College
“A fascinating look at loneliness from a biblical perspective. With increasing urbanization and social fragmentation in our premodern Global South societies, loneliness is fast becoming a growing concern. Steve Dewitt has given us a warm, inspirational and gentle guide that reads like a conversation with a trusted friend.”
—OSCAR MURIU, pastor of Nairobi Chapel, Nairobi, Kenya
“You might be married with kids and boast thousands of friends on social media. Yet you might still feel lonely. Steve DeWitt challenged me by showing how loneliness can be a gift from God to help us love Him more fully. Readers will join me in learning to take loneliness as an occasion to turn toward our ever-present God.”
—COLLIN HANSEN, editor-in-chief of The Gospel Coalition and host of the Gospelbound podcast
“As a settled widow of twenty years, I can highly recommend this book to anyone suffering loneliness due to loss of a loved one or in any situation of loneliness. It is practical and engaging, chock-full of biblical truth that leads us to the principle of redeeming loneliness and seeing it as a gift from God that points us to Him. If you need hope, you will find it here.”
—DONNA CUNNINGHAM, widow and member of Bethel Church, NW Indiana
“Working with young adults on a college campus, loneliness is a pervasive feeling expressed daily, and the world is providing empty solutions. With a beautiful blend of biblical wisdom and practical insight, Steve DeWitt unpacks the origins of loneliness in each of us and offers transformative solutions rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Through heartfelt personal stories and scriptural truths, readers are guided toward a deeper understanding of loneliness and our intrinsic need for a relationship with God and others. This book provides a path to contentment amidst life’s challenges.”
—DREW FLAMM, President, Grace College & Seminary
“The first time I met Steve, the first thing I said to him during our lunch was, ‘Tell me about your family.’ Of course, I was unaware that Steve was single at the time . . . So I’ve known Steve from his days as the ‘single megachurch pastor’ and now as the ‘married with children megachurch pastor.’ Through it all, I’ve witnessed Steve use his singleness, his marriage, and his parenting all for the glory of God. My friend, my pastor, my ministry colleague—Steve DeWitt—has that same ‘it’s all about Him’ focus in his biblical, realistic book, Loneliness. Single or married, younger or older, this book is for all of us because it gets to the heart of loneliness and walks us through all the various stages and phases of loneliness. But Loneliness doesn’t leave you alone. It gently leads you to your gentle Shepherd who will never leave you or forsake you. In His presence, we can lament our loneliness without hating it, and use our loneliness without wasting it.”
—BOB KELLEMEN, author of Gospel-Centered Marriage Counseling and Gospel-Centered Family Counseling
“In this thoughtful book, Steve DeWitt shares his own transformative journey with loneliness. With warmth, biblical insight, and a focus on practical action, Loneliness helps readers see their challenging solitary times as catalysts for growth and deeper connections with others. This is a truly valuable resource that speaks to the redemptive power of God available in our darkest moments.”

5.0 out of 5 stars heavenly gift!!!
Never in my wildest dreams did I think that loneliness is actually a gift and yet am now realizing that every major season of loneliness in my life was quenched once God graciously came into the equation. Thank you for explaining the concept of nakedness brought about by sin!! I now understand the fall of man much much better!! Last but not least thank you for expounding upon the power of vulnerability (a testament to the freedom Christ gives us from fear of man) and also thank you for the encouragement to the flock to remember that leaders are not gods but fellow believers deserving of grace as we all do.
5.0 out of 5 stars How This Book Redeemed My Lonliness
After losing my wife, I was gifted Loneliness: Doesn’t Hate It, Redeem It by Steve DeWitt during a time of deep loneliness. DeWitt’s gospel-centered perspective on why loneliness exists and how to channel it into growth was life-changing. His insights helped me process my grief, build stronger connections with God and others, and find peace. For instance, his encouragement to see loneliness as an opportunity for connection inspired me to engage more with my community, which gave me the confidence to move forward. This book turned loneliness into a catalyst for positive change, helping me find joy again, including in exploring a new relationship. If you’re struggling with isolation, I highly recommend this book.
5.0 out of 5 stars Made for Relationship
Where is the Lord when we feel lonely? Loneliness is something I hope to be aware of and attack as I get older. In Loneliness, Steve DeWitt teaches that you don’t have to hate or waste your loneliness, but you can redeem it.DeWitt is aware of the role technology and social media have played to make us lonely. We eat dinner with our family and friends, but focus on our phones. And amassing many online followers is not the same as having family and friends close by. I was convicted.DeWitt wisely distinguishes between what is undesirable (loneliness), neutral (aloneness), and good (solitude). What I was most interested to learn was how loneliness leads us to the Gospel. Only God can satisfy the loneliness in our hearts. People can come to church and still be lonely because they miss out on God. True community comes with Christ at the center. Our Self-Giving SaviorInterestingly, it is self-giving that eliminates loneliness. We can look to Christ as our example, who endured all the way to the cross to love lonely sinners. DeWitt uses the language of being “specially inconvenienced” to help and love others – and I was challenged and ashamed of my selfishness in this regard, especially when it comes to being hospitable to others.DeWitt is clear from the beginning that marriage is not the cure to loneliness. Singles have time, energy, and focus to work on their relationship with the Lord as well as with others. Marriage provides daily moments and tensions for change, the gift of sexual intimacy, and immediate access to emotional/spiritual maturity and empathy. No matter your marital status, it can be leveraged to redeem your loneliness.Towards the end of the book, DeWitt examines the relationship between loneliness and contentment – ultimately pointing us to Christ. A standout chapter is on loneliness and leaders, a must-read for pastors. Examining our pride, being honest about our social media, and assessing our friendship IQ are practical tips to close out the book.Made for RelationshipThis book was paradigm-shifting for me. I had never viewed loneliness as a gift. I had thought it was a feeling of something wrong – but DeWitt says it is simply a warning sign. It is an indicator that something needs to be fixed. Loneliness is not a sin, but an indication that we are made for relationship with God and others. I now know how I can redeem my loneliness and give it to the Lord.I received a media copy of Loneliness and this is my honest review.
5.0 out of 5 stars I didn't know I was lonely or even acting in Loneliness until I read this book
I am currently in a standstill situation where I can do nothing but wait and trust in God. Let me tell you, it's lonely. I am seeking a renewed journey with Him to become the person I know I can be and whom He has destined me to be. I am waiting as my partner (and maybe future husband) goes through his journey with God as well. I am also parenting two little ones and looking for a new job. I have been overwhelmed and stressed, looking for help and trying to figure out what God wants from me. I didn't realize that I indeed was lonely and was acting in sin due to my loneliness, and that my mindset on things like God, Christian community, and the desire to network was all wrong until I read this book. This book was so refreshing and encouraging, and has definitely given me a new awareness about myself, others, and my personal walk with Christ. If you are in that in-between stage of wanting to move forward but somehow can't, and you feel like you're trying but nothing seems to work, give this book a read. You may be on the right track but just need to try a different method (God's method — He's calling). It just may be that this time of silence where it seems like everything is going wrong is Him trying to get your attention; you just have to be ready to listen and accept Him. I love and encourage all young and old to read it.
5.0 out of 5 stars God’s love in us and through us to others, lessens our loneliness
This book is a wonderful reminder that we were created by God to be in relationship with Him and with others. We can only be truly happy when we are in relationship with God through His Son, Jesus. He fills the void within us. In his book, Pastor Steve shows us that the gospel of Jesus Christ is the pathway out of loneliness. By giving of ourselves in humble service to others and being open and vulnerable with our lives in relationship with others, we show love that is oriented toward others and not ourselves. This is the key to escaping loneliness. There is so much more in this book that I love. I highly recommend it!
