SUMMARYWho it's for:-Anyone who wants to take their home cooking from good to fantastic-Anyone who wants semi-quick (30 - 60 minutes) recipes that are deliciousWho it's (maybe) not for:-People who already know which knives are essential, how to keep food from sticking to their pan, how to deglaze a pan and thicken a sauce, how to balance a recipe that's too one-note or a little meh, how to design a well-balanced sauce, and other everyday cooking skills. You'll still find the recipes delicious, but 25% of the book will be a review for you. Decide accordingly.-Vegetarians or vegans (I would say 75% of the recipes involve meat, and one of the chapters is entirely about meat).MORE DETAILSI grew up in a household where we used bread knives for cutting everything. Seriously. And my Mom, the cook of the house, made a lot of great meals! I still make a lot of her recipes! But I didn't learn much in terms of everyday cooking skills that make it quicker and easier to put together a great meal. I've picked up a lot of tips since I left home, but I still had a lot left to learn. Enter - the Cook's Book.In the month that I've been reading this book and making the recipes, I've found ease and joy in my kitchen. I've bookmarked several of the information pages for easy reference (see the pics for a few). I've made 7 of the recipes. Out of those, 4 are marked "DELICIOUS," "WONDERFUL," or "OMG." 1 is "GREAT." 1 is marked "VERY GOOD, but hard to make in double quantity." 1 is "MEDIOCRE, unfortunately."So the final tally is 6 out of 7 recipes: GREAT to OMG. 1 out of 7: MEDIOCRE. That's a winning ratio to me! And 90% of the info pages are new fundamentals that have been slowly upgrading how I cook. I am so happy that I bought this book!!
5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for Your Everyday Cookbook Shelf
Bri McKoy walks you through how to not just be a recipe reader but to use your senses and instincts to cook wonderful meals. She walks through cooking basics like knife skills, tasting your food, and the basics of salt. This cookbook has so many fun recipes that level up your cooking. Things like risotto feel like something that should be best left to the professional chefs and Italians. Being neither, I made this recipe and felt so confident. The flavor was phenomenal, and I couldn't believe that I made it. Other fun recipes like bolognese, sheet pan nachos, and chicken piccata are great for busy weeknights. In addition to great recipes and essential cooking skills, Bri walks you through food and wine pairing and building a bar cart. I highly recommend this cookbook for someone who is new to cooking, someone who is trying to find joy in the kitchen again, or anyone who wants fancy feeling food coming from your kitchen.
5.0 out of 5 stars Not your typical cookbook - this one will transform your approach to cooking!
I used to hate cooking. I mean I really hated it...I knew how to make a couple of recipes that my mom taught me when I was a kid and that was it. If something went wrong, I had no idea how to adjust, so I just got frustrated. How is my chicken both burning and not up to a safe internal temperature?? What even is the point of trying???Enter Bri McKoy. I took her online Everyday Kitchen Masterclass, which not only taught me some delicious recipes, but crucially taught me the "why" behind what I was doing every step of the way. It has completely changed how I feel about cooking. I went from a usually frustrated "Hello Fresh sometimes works okay for me" type of cook to someone who enjoys going to the store and seeing what looks good and then searching for recipes using in-season ingredients to try.She has translated that class and much much more into this book and I cannot recommend it highly enough! Everyone who has learned to cook by just trying their best to follow recipes NEEDS this book. I guarantee you, it will change your life in the kitchen in the best way.Along with super valuable cooking lessons, she also has a ton of absolutely delicious recipes in here, plus a whole section on wine pairing that has made me at least appreciate wine more if not totally converted me into a wine snob. There is a margarita recipe in here that is literally the best margarita I have ever had, and my husband, who is VERY picky, absolutely cannot get enough of it.On top of all the incredibly valuable information in here, this is also just a beautiful cookbook and will make a nice addition to your shelf. I can't say enough good things about this book, but this review has to end sometime, so just do yourself a favor and buy this book immediately!
5.0 out of 5 stars Fave cook book!
This book is the one I never knew I needed. From the salt to the knives to the lemons to the sauces to the pans to cocktails there is no kitchen thought unturned. Bri does an amazing job walking you through the basics and empowers YOU to make time in the kitchen one you look forward to. Recipes are simple yet so tasty and memorable and the beverage pairings are a happy addition. I cannot wait to share this book with friends and family; it’s the perfect gift for anyone!
5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for any kitchen!
First of all, the book is just gorgeous - the rose gold foiling and pretty pink binding - just absolutely lovely. The pictures inside are stunning and make your mouth water! But the content is the real game changer - Bri walks you through creating your ideal kitchen environment and helps you focus in on areas you want to feel more confident in and gives next steps on making that happen. Her recipes are DELICIOUS and manageable - there's recipes for busy weeknights or big crowd pleasers but also ones for those days you might have some extra minutes to spare. With every recipe comes delicious flavors and the satisfaction you used your tools and senses to create something wonderful!Cannot recommend this book enough - Bri is like a wise and trusted bestie from the get go and she will make your life in the kitchen better and open to bringing more people to the table.
First recipe I tried, a winner! Great format too.
I've only cooked one recipe from this book (so far), but it was a winner for me, the extra creamy chicken piccata. I love the recipe format of the book too, the way the steps are numbered in separate paragraphs, the helpful hints in the recipe, the mention of prep and cooking times and so on. If you're not a very experienced cook, this kind of instruction is SO helpful. All of this would be meaningless if the recipes weren't any good, but they ARE, so it's win, win! I can see myself cooking a LOT of recipes from this book. Kudos to Bri for her excellent approach to cooking and helping all of us become better cooks. Definitely recommended!
