CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATIONS

REAL-LIFE SCIENCE LABS FOR GRADES 6- 12

What could be more motivational than turning your students into super sleuths to learn scientific principles and techniques? This unique resource for science teachers in grades 6-12 gives students the chance to be crime scene investigators with 68 lessons and labs in life, physical, and earth sciences as well as critical thinking.

Like real-life forensic scientists, students observe carefully, think critically, conduct lab tests, document results, and try to meet the burden of proof to solve crimes ranging from check forgery to murder! And for added fun and interest, an original cartoon character, "Crime Cat," enlivens the pages as he sleuths his way through each new mystery, sifting evidence and observing details.

All 68 lessons and labs include complete background information for the teacher and reproducible student worksheets. And for easy use, all material is printed in a spiral-bound format that folds flat for photocopying of any page as many times as needed and is organized into four convenient sections that cover all major areas of the science curriculum:

I. CRITICAL THINKING - In Section 1, you'll find 17 ready-to-use lessons and labs that reinforce skills of observation, experimentation, and logical thinking with titles such as Who Wrote This? (document forgery) - Whose Lipstick? (chromatography of lipstick) - Tattle-Tale Type (typewriter comparison) . . . If the Shoe Fits (shoe print impressions).

II. PHYSICAL SCIENCE - Section 2 provides 14 reproducible lessons and labs that apply the principles of chemistry and physics to identify unknown substances, recognize patterns, and determine the chain of events such as Print Patterns (fingerprint identification) - Fibers Don't Fib (fiber analysis) and . . . Glass Chip Tips (glass identification).

III. LIFE SCIENCE - Section 3 features 20 lessons and labs focusing on evidence left at crime scenes by living things and teaches principles of inheritance, DNA analysis, skeletal structure, and characteristics of hair and skin, just a few examples are What a Cell Can Tell (DNA fingerprinting techniques) . . . Take a Bite Out of Crime (dental forensics) and . . . Hairy Cat Capers (hair identification).

IV. EARTH SCIENCE, ARCHAEOLOGY, AND ANTHROPOLOGY - The last section offers 17 lessons and accompanying labs that feature unidentified remains, mummies, skeletons, and more and demonstrate how reconstruction of past events can influence the outcome of a criminal investigation. Sample lessons and labs include Where is My Mummy? (preserving flesh) . . . Dating--Radioactive Style (forensic archaeology) . . . The Dirt on Crime (evidence from the soil) and . . . Making No Bones About It (skeletal evidence).

No matter what science area you're teaching, Crime Scene Investigations can be an intriguing supplement to instruction. You'll find your students will be eager to learn science concepts and solve a mystery at the same time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked Great for a School Science Club

R.B. · May 8, 2013

After deciding to start a science club for my daughter's elementary school I decided the theme for the year would be forensic science. I used this book for an K-8 club that quickly became an K-5th grade club. This book was used as a resource, and not to copy and print specific experiments. I had already intended to adapt the mysteries to make them appropriate for this age of kids and to make it more interesting and personal for them. Crime Scene Investigations is easy to read and the instructions are clear. I appreciated the wide variety of experiments provided. I thought some of the illustrations, those related to the skeleton labs, were difficult to understand and did not show enough gender diversity for the students to reach successful conclusions. I also feel that many elementary schools won't have stereomicroscopes or disecting microscopes. If they do, they probably don't have enough for a larger class of students to use all at the same time. Despite this, my students were able to do a lot with magnifying glasses and still get the point of the experiment.Overall the book is a great resource. Labs can be used as written or can be embellished by typically creative science teachers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Science Supplement or It's Own Science Course

M. · January 23, 2008

Fully developed lesson plans for 6th-12th graders on various aspects of forensic science. Requires some gathering of materials, all easily obtainable, but not necessarily household items. Requires some prep on the part of the teacher, but not excessive prep work. Includes activities that can be completed in one day, and activities that involve observation over a time span of days or weeks. There is an elementary school edition for younger children. I wish it were still offered in the original spiral binding, though.High quality addition to traditional science curriculum or good as a stand-alone special course.

4.0 out of 5 stars Take a bite out of crime!

Fabulous price! Great topic for middle school and high school kids. A little challenging as far as the layout for the chapters with regard to where the teacher materials in the student materials are. I would definitely recommend this purchase for anyone trying to put together a forensics Class as a reference. i'm already working on my plan to implement several of the activities in addition to the ones that I already have.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL book -- especially for home-schoolers!

F.H.M. · February 17, 2005

I used this book in home-schooling my god-daughter at the eighth grade level. She LOVED every minute in this book, and it was a great incentive for "Finish your other work first!"The editorial review is accurate in every way. The more advanced labs were easily adaptable, and were a good motivation to achieve "advanced level" labs.Classroom teachers will find this to be a terrific resource -- and an outstanding source for substitute teachers' lesson plans. Imagine: a substitute teacher who actually TEACHES something in your absence! (Careful though, the kids might not want you back...)

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to Use

C.E. · June 26, 2007

I teach a ton of forensics in my high school science classes and wasn't sure if this book would provide me with new ideas, but it did. I ordered this at the end of the school year and was able to use some of the activities to keep the kids occupied during the last days before exams. The activities I have used so far are super easy to use and kept the kids really engaged.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Useful

M. · March 29, 2014

I was a science teacher at a behavior modification high school. It was difficult to motivate my kids to be interested in ANYTHING school related. I bought this book hoping that I could spark their interest - and it worked. I even got the school resource officer involved to help with the labs. Anyone who loves that "spark" in a kid when they are excited about learning - when they are actually engaged - will understand when I say that this book was worth its weight in gold!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Info - Terrible layout

B. · October 3, 2006

The book is great, and with very useful information. However, I have a class of 20 students of whom I purchased books for a high school Forensics class, and after receiving the books, I realized that the answers are within the text. This would be OK (maybe) if the answers were on a separate page that I could have removed from the books, but instead, the answers are intermingled with important information. I purchased labels to cover up all of the answers within each book. This was not the best solution, and I wish there was either a separate answer key, or the answers were in the back of each book. I found out that some of the students removed the labels. I wish I would have realized this before my purchase, as I may have had to search for another book. This too, would have been unfortunate, as the class would have missed out on some great experiments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great activities

Thanks!

J. · March 22, 2021

There have been so many advances in forensic techniques since this book was written that the content is largely obsolete. Disappointed that I spent so much, I thought I was getting something published relatively recently. You can Google activities that are more up to date. My fault for not researching my purchase properly.

Perfect for the Classroom.
