5.0 out of 5 stars Attention Cincinnati Reds Fans!
Great book for any fan of The Big Red Machine (you know who you are). Bought book for my husband since part of the reason he married me was because I was the first person he dated who knew what The Big Red Machine was. Entertaining book.
5.0 out of 5 stars My husband loves the Reds and was a fan at that time.
I remember going to the games in the '70's even made it with my dad for one play off game and one World Series Game. Great and wonderful memories ❤️
5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for fans of that era but extremely small print
I bought this book as a gift for my 84 year old father. This is a great read for people who remember the big red machine. The only problem is the print is extremely tiny. Fortunately, he has been able to read it, but it may be very difficult for some to be able to see the print
5.0 out of 5 stars How to Run A Baseball Team
I didn't know a lot of about Bob Howsam before reading this book, but the author provides excellent insight into Mr. Howsam's life, character, baseball in a different era, and what led him to becoming a successful GM of the Cincinnati Reds from 1967-78. Even better, there are a lot of great tips that can be used in business and everyday life. They are:1. Good communication2. Learn everything about the business you're in3. Find a mentor and shadow them4. Deal with problems right away5. Treat your employees like a family and get to know them6. Hire good people and let them do their jobs7. Don't be afraid to take risks8. Be honest and professional9. Maintain standards10. Embrace change if there's a good benefit to doing so
4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Reds Fans
I grew up on the Big Red Machine of the 1970's. They are my baseball idols and this book is about the man that made that team, Bob Howsam. Howsam knew how to build a team. He did it with the Cardinals of 60's . He had a strict approach to it and it worked to near perfection for the time. In this book you get a real good feel to what made Howsam be the person he was and what drove him to success. I gave it four stars because there was some minor factual errors and the author never mentioned that Woodie Fryman quit the 1977 team in mid season because he didn't get along with Sparky Anderson and didn't want a bullpen role. Even though he had been very bad as a starter. When you read that part you are lead to believe he was on the team the entire season and then traded. Which was not the case at all. The Reds did retain the rights to him were able to trade him to the Cubs after the season. Maybe not a big thing, but that should have been brought out better. But still a good book and does make a very good case for Howsam to be in the Hall of Fame. Not many GM's in MLB history have built two different world championship franchises.

5.0 out of 5 stars At the same time the book is a great primer for learning sports management techniques
This book is not only for those of us who grew up with the Big Red Machine, but also for the new generation of baseball fans. The history of the players are discussed along with strategy behind the players. At the same time the book is a great primer for learning sports management techniques, in fact the leadership techniques can be used for any business. I highly recommend the book. Don't expect the to read the book like a novel, it is loaded with facts and information. I don't think there will ever be another team like the Big Red Machine!
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent behind the scenes description of my favorite team!
Even if you are only a casual fan of the Big Red Machine, this is a great book to read! Everyone knows what the BRM did, but how they did it was always a great mystery. The author really brings out the character of the players and how their chemistry was created. I just wish the Reds dynasty had carried over throughout the 80's as well.
A good read
