5.0 out of 5 stars Another great Charles Martin book
Wasn’t sure about this book when I started reading it but I’ve now read all four. I should have never questioned whether or not I’d like a Charles Martin book. Fabulous!
5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful writing and story
Thank you for writing about this topic. You have made it possible for people to get a glimpse into something that is horrible so survivors have a chance at freedom and healing. People should find a way to help fight against this evil. Thanks for opening the door.
4.0 out of 5 stars The endurance of Murphy
Overall t story line was good. I appreciated that no foul language or graphic sex was absent . The physical abuse that Murphy endured was a bit overdone.Dave
5.0 out of 5 stars My new favorite author! LOVE this book!
I am amazed at the ability of this author to create such compelling characters and storylines. He wades into a very grizzly subject with passion, integrity and honor. So many twists and turns that I couldn't put the book down. Onto book two, can't wait to see what happens next.
5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
The story kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat! It deals with the human/sex trafficking problem in a way that lets the reader understand but without going into graphic details. I will be thinking of this Love story for a good long while.
5.0 out of 5 stars Suspense with amazing writing.
Charles Martin has something to say, and he says it very, very well.My words are inadequate to communicate the genius of this book, so here are some of Charles Martin’s words (without any spoilers!):‘’We three were still standing with our jaws open when we heard the sound.” [Choosing “the sound” rather than “a sound” perfectly sets up several pages of breathless suspense. Such attention to detail makes this Pulitzer Prize-caliber writing.]“Thousands of knive-edged keels and spinning razor blades have cut this water right here. Sliced it into ten billion drops that somehow come back together again. No scar. Nothing can separate it.” [As with many Charles Martin books, water and water symbolism are a central focus.]“Pain has a way of exiting the body, and most will let you know when it’s on its way out.” [The main character, Murphy, has exceptional insight into human nature.]“‘Do you work for the government or something?’ ‘Or something.’” [Murphy has an amazing career rescuing victims of human trafficking. Part of the suspense is figuring out who he is and who he works with.]“They will tell her repeatedly that she is free to leave anytime, but they will give her every possible reason and incentive not to.” [I learned a lot about how human traffickers--at least ones of the type described in this book--operate.]“[Love] writes over the old memories. Makes beauty out of pain. Love writes what can be.” … “That’s the crazy miracle that is love. The more you pour out, the more you have to pour.” [Insight into brotherly/unconditional love.]“I needed to know if the sight, the sound, and the smell of her tugged on me. Or was my emotional connection to her just a function of the trauma we both had suffered in our ordeal?” [Hooray for a wise and mature outlook on romantic love.]Reading The Water Keeper left me:Breathless - from the tightly woven suspenseEdified - by new insights into love and healingEducated - about how human trafficking operatesInspired - with new ways to converse with addicts and other “damaged” people I encounterSatisfied - by one of the best denouements I’ve ever read--all of the loose threads were nicely tiedQuick synopsis: This suspense centers around the Parable of the Lost Sheep and explores topics of love and moving from captivity to freedom (physically and emotionally). Murphy, a priest and talented secret agent, rescues girls from human traffickers. Along the way, he picks up a ragtag band of people (and a dog) who need to find their way home. You will love this book if: you love suspense, literature, and being transported to new places; you are a Christian preacher looking for fresh imagery; or you are looking for healing words in a book of fiction. You may not like this book if: you can’t stand descriptions of blood or you can’t stomach realistic descriptions of the evil of human trafficking. Overall rating: 6 out of 5 (worth buying, rereading, studying, sharing, and even memorizing).
5.0 out of 5 stars I've found another favorite author.
This is the second book I've read by Charles Martin. I enjoy his mysterious style of writing that keeps you reading chapter after chapter to find out more about the characters. This book is better yet with Mr. Murphy who is a priest and a broken hearted lover but he isn't even just Mr. Murphy or a priest. He is so much more. There are so many layers to peal back as you read this book. I can't wait to see how Murphy Shepherd, Summer, Clay, Gunner, and Ellie continue on in the next book.
3.0 out of 5 stars Definitely not his best
I've loved all of Mr. Martin's books but I had a rough time with this one. It was too over the top, too many unclear moments. I was left with too many questions that need answers. He's clearly not a Catholic but it's very easy to look up things online. Why did Murphy go to the seminary? Yet he was always in love with Marie. Did he finish seminary? Did he grow up Catholic? Surely he did if he went to seminary. Yet he doesn't know what is said during Communion? Impossible. Did he actually become a priest? So how did he marry? Seminary comes AFTER a college degree then it takes 4 years to complete seminary. In Every Catholic Church around the entire world during Communion the priest says "the Body of Christ" we say Amen and he gives us Christ's body which is no longer bread. Then he says "the Blood of Christ" and we say Amen. But it's only done in Mass or taken to the dying AFTER consecration. I'm assuming he went to Catholic seminary since you keep saying priest and convent, etc. But who knows. So much is so unclear.Did he murder Marie even though she was already dying? That whole scene was so confusing. Did he drown her? And why did she want him to take her into the water? And I hated her character. She didn't deserve his love. And it wasn't at all sad when she died because her character was so shallow. What a selfish horrible woman. She destroyed his life, her own and their child's. No sympathy for her. And he's a morin for chasing her all over. She clearly didn't love him so he was just weird fir not letting her go. If she had yo faje her death she trily wanted to crush him. In fact all the characters are so shallow I wasn't upset with anything happening to them. Give them some depth. Something we can love and care about. There's far more description to the minute details of the Florida coastline than the people in this book. So much was just way too confusing. And even more was just so over the top it was completely unbelievable. I really wanted to like it. And I may give the second book a chance. But this was disappointing. I liked the story just not how it was written. It was too confusing, too much useless details about boats and the Intercoastal waters yet not enough about the characters. I didn't care for any of them. I didn't even cry when the dig got hurt...either time. I'm not sure I should even give it 3 stars. But i like the IDEA of this book. It just fell short.
Great condition
Great condition, thank you.
Just wow!
Jason Bourne meets Father Brown meets Batman meets Robin Hood? I don't know how to all the facets of this character. Fascinating personalities, heart wrenching storyline and fast paced action kept me up too late, just *having* to read "one more chapter". My imagination is ignited. I can't wait to read the next one.
Great story
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Actually ,I've enjoyed all of Charles Martin's books, but this was one of the best. Can't wait until the next one is released, but not too long now!
Amazing Read
I grabbed this book with caution, knowing the basic theme, but what gentleness the author used to write this story. I did not anticipate all the twists and turns. It’s beautifully tragic. I highly recommend this book. Looking forward to the journey through the series.
