5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely a 5 ⭐️ Read
Wow wow and another WOW 🤩 As the kids saying today: this book was Fire 🔥This book does not disappoint and I feel like it’s Mary Kubica’s best work yet.It starts out so slow, depressing and not really anything I would normally be interested in reading. It begins with a recent divorcee, single mom who is also a critical care nurse in Chicago. She has a lot of stress on her plate due to the nature of her job and the pain she still suffers from her divorce. But what seems to get to her the most is the patient she gets rotated to tend to named Caitlyn. The woman is said to have jumped off the pedestrian bridge but somehow survived (barely) and is in a coma. The woman’s parents take a strong liking to Meghan and request for her to tend to their daughter’s care. Meanwhile, there is a number of women who are getting attacked, robbed and SA’d by some masked man at night in their apartments. He follows them then sneaks in behind as they unlock their doors and attacks them. This has Meghan on high alert as she walks home from work at night by herself, she has a faulty lock that the apartment manager has yet to take care of and her teenage daughter is often left alone after school until Meghan can get home. Her daughter is a typical teen who thinks nothing bad will happen to her and doesn’t think before she acts. The story begins getting good when Meghan goes to attend a divorce group therapy session and runs into one of her old high school friends. She hasn’t seen this women in over 20 years. Meghan is quite concerned about this friend and wants to reconnect and bond with her over their shared situation. The woman claims her ex husband abused her and she has no money and no place to stay. Of course Meghan being the martyr she invites her into her home. That night she shares a secret with this “old classmate and friend” that she’s never told anyone before….and that’s when the story takes a fascinating twist!! Just about 40% or so into the book it became a page turner. Trust the process and enjoy the twists and turns, I think I have whiplash!!! It was just soo good!
4.0 out of 5 stars Great read
Very good read recommend it highly
3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting twist with poor execution
I debated between giving this 2 and 3 stars and ultimately settled on 2 stars for the book itself, and I added the third because it did arrive on time and undamaged. To start, despite several different plot lines being introduced in the first two-thirds of the novel, it is quite the slow burn. And despite this slow start, it doesn't take much critical thinking to figure out who the likely rapist/murderer terrorizing the neighborhood is pretty early on. Which, while on the topic, boggles my mind how any decent mother, knowing that there have been several incidents within blocks of her home, consistently leaves her teenage daughter at home alone with a broken door that the daughter also can't seem to close and lock properly. While the writing was not necessarily bad, I found myself skimming on several occasions while the author spent unnecessary time describing the streets and layout of Chicago that after the first or second description in no way added to the story. But none of these criticisms compare to my frustration with the major twist the author introduces about two-thirds of the way through the novel - a twist which seems impossible if you take the previous two-thirds as occurring in sequential order, as they seemingly are written. I read this book in about 5 hours in one sitting, so there was no time in-between reading sessions for me to forget how earlier plot lines were presented, and upon the revelation of the twist I was so baffled I had to look back at how the previous chapters were written. The manner in which the author presented the plot, as well as intentionally withholding perspective from the main character throughout the first two-thirds so as to "hide" the twist, felt confusing and poorly executed upon finishing the book. I feel that if the story was presented differently it could have easily ranked higher for me.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great Writer
Love reading her books! I think I've ordered every single one she's written. The ending is always a surprise I never saw coming.
4.0 out of 5 stars Grab your snacks and blanket
Grab your snacks and blanket …you’ll be here awhile. Mary Kubica has an impressive catalog and with one exception every book has earned 4 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️. I rarely give 5 star reviews because I save them for “those books”, the ones you’ll always remember the title and you return too.The characters, setting and story arcs were perfect. In this novel you get two distinct stories running parallel to each other seamlessly. The twists and turns will have you scratching your head - wondering how did I miss that?
5.0 out of 5 stars just Wow!
This book takes so many twists and turns my head is spinning! It’s definitely a page turner! So creepy good!
4.0 out of 5 stars A big twist that had me guessing
I recently finished reading "She's Not Sorry" by Mary Kubica, and I can't recommend it enough! From the first page, I was hooked by her knack for crafting suspenseful and gripping narratives. The book effortlessly blends mystery and psychological drama, keeping you on the edge of your seat throughout.Kubica's characters are incredibly well-developed and relatable, each with their own layers and complexities that make them feel real. I particularly loved how she weaves together multiple perspectives, which adds depth and nuance to the storyline. The plot twists were unexpected and kept me guessing until the very end, which is a testament to Kubica’s clever storytelling. What’s also impressive is how she tackles themes of guilt, redemption, and human emotions in such a raw and authentic way. It makes you ponder what you would do if you were in the characters' shoes, adding an interactive element to the reading experience.Overall, "She's Not Sorry" is a thrilling page-turner that’s perfect for anyone who loves a good psychological thriller with emotional depth.
3.0 out of 5 stars Slow start but worth the finish
This book started sooooooo slow and didn't really catch my my attention until half way through. Don't give up on it!
Thriller is 100% the right word.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🤯🤯🤯🤯This book contains TWWhat a read and 100% lives up to the genre Thriller.ICU nurse Meghan is trying to balance work, being divorced and a teenage daughter all on her own. It isn't going well when she ends up too close and personal with her new ICU patient, Caitlyn. The prologue grabs you hard, though it does make the first 9 chapters a 'slow' read. But once you get there you better want to hold on to your seat and plan not to put it down again until you reach the end. I seriously cannot tell you anything about the story details without ruining something that makes this so hard to write.I will note the Author was on key with the suspense, the story, and the whole works. It was a smooth read. One more note that for me I like obvious jumps in time with a line of *** but this one is just double line space. Took me a few gaps to finally click on.
Great suspense here, captivating story.....
RATE of 4.25 from me! One of my favourite authors....and this book was excellent...lots of OH MY GOSH'S, wondering what would happen to Nurse Meghan... My heart was with her and her daughter, even with the EVENTS that surrounded the nurse... The author leaves a BIG....WHAT IF... at the end....for readers to ponder after the book is closed....ummm...
Amazing twisty thriller!!!
This was FABULOUS!! I love most books from this author but this one was really good. This is pretty much the only genre I read and have not enjoyed one as much as I enjoyed this one in a very long time, I loved the twist in it. I can usually predict what the twists are but this one surprise me!
You’ll never expect the twist
This book is a slow burner in the beginning. But oh my gosh stick with it because to twists will have you spinning!! The prologue grabs your attention and you feel you know what the book is all about, as you follow the lives of a divorced critical care nurse and her teenage daughter. She lives in a city plagued by a man on the loose breaking into women’s homes while they are alone. She becomes the carer for a woman who jumped from a bridge , surviving barely, and you learn more about her from her family but so much remains a mystery. Why did she jump? Or did she ?The drama thickens as an old school friend arrives and needs help escaping from her husband, but then vanishes just as soon as she arrives. All the while as the reader you wonder when the madman who pushed the poor woman from a bridge will get caught, where on earth Nat disappeared too, and when will the man terrorising the city be caught! You will never expect where the truth lies , and how close it is to home.Fascinating read
Talk about a plot twist!!
Holy plot twist! This ain’t my usual genre, but gosh did this draw me in and take hold. I definitely need to step out of my comfort zone more often! This had me carving out time in my day to read because once I reached a certain point I knew there was no stopping until I had finished.
