I just received Modern Manners today, and have spent over an hour perusing it. Although I admit I haven't read every word, I am very impressed with the book. The format is pleasing, interesting and makes for a quick reference for many situations. The book, co-authored by a renowned etiquette expert and her granddaughter, covers topics ranging from dress, posture, introductions, how to mingle, and even how to shake hands. These may seem to be very simplistic areas, until you find yourself in a situation and you don't know what to wear, how to introduce your boss to a friend, how to feel comfortable at a social/business function, or dining at a table where there's more silverware in front of you than in your momma's silver drawer! The book also gives relevant information about other cultures including greetings, dining information and conversation distances. All of this being very relevant as international travel and trade increases. Many of the suggestions in the book not only cover what is proper socially, but gives wonderful suggestions for those who want to make a positive impression in the business world. Manners may not ever go out of style, but they do evolve. Many of the rules from Emily Post and Amy Vanderbilt, even though perfect for their time, are outdated. Ladies, we may still want to be treated special by our husbands, boyfriends, and male friends, but being catered to by men in the business world is not going to help us get ahead. This book addresses this need and shows women how to step up and show ourselves as equals (standing when someone enters, offering our hands for a firm shake, etc.). Don't get the idea from the last comment that this book is just for females, it has beneficial information for all!I think this would be an excellent book for young men and women about to go to college or who are in college and will be entering the business world soon or those already in the business world.

I LOVE IT!!!!!It's easy, and if there was a second book with more details I would definitely buy it!The illustrations are really nice and it has the ABC about modern etiquette.I'm sure there must be other books that are more extensive and maybe have more scenarios BUT for me it was just the right amount of information.The sections are well divided and it always kept me interested.I would recommend it for someone who is new in this and wants to have a glance, or to someone who maybe already knew most of the things but needs a refresher.Click the button if this review helped you at all. :)

Very helpful but doesn’t get into why things are done and why many people don’t follow manners. Ignorance is part of the problem, but not everyone has time to read this kind of book so how are people supposed to learn these things. Who decides what these practices are? The book is simple and easy to read, like a rule book, but I wish it would get more into why manners are practiced so inconsistently in our society and how unequal socio-economic conditions make it hard for everyone to be on the same page about what is polite and what’s not.

Before I gave this book as a gift I read some of the chapters. It is not your typical manners book of old. Some of the chapters are: Global Handshakes, Using Technology in Public Places, Body Language, Eye Contact, Business Introductions, Dignitaries, Officials, Diplomats, Etiquette on the Web, International Business E-mail, Place-Setting Savvy, American and European Styles of Eating and much, much more.I purchased several extra copies of the book and keeping one copy for myself.

I actually enjoyed the book. The reson I'm giving 3 stars is because it has a very important flaw regarding how to hold wineglass. It says you have to hold a red wine glass by the bottom of the bowl (instead of holding them by the stem). If you hold the glass like that, the temperatura of your wine increases, it might even spoil the wine. Beside that, I think the lessons and advices are very useful.

I used this book in our homeschool to teach my kids some manners. We did skip over some parts that just aren’t super applicable to their life. But we really enjoyed learning about various greeting styles around the world. They really seemed to pick up some better manners along the way, learning when and how to properly hold open a door and how to properly mingle at a social event. I know a handful of kids was likely not the target audience the authors had in mind, but it worked perfectly for us.

I like the modern culture updates that were included in the information about manners. It is a quick read, but packed with valuable information. I an an executive business person who travels internationally. I have had formal etiquette training, but find it a good practice to review from time to time. I bought the book for a niece attending college. I though I would just skim through it before presenting it as a gift, read it cover to cover and now I plan to order another one to keep for myself.

I wanted a good book of manners for my 11 year old daughter. Something modern and simple. This is the perfect book for her! It gives her clear direction with some pictures, and a few funny stories. The only downside for us is the chapter on netiquette and social media. I feel it could be longer and give a little more info. But all in all I would give it an A+.

Aun tratando sobre algo que podría llegar a ser bastante aburrido, el libro explica todo de una manera entretenida. Además las ilustraciones y las anotaciones curisosas hace que quieras seguir leyendo más.Otro punto importante es que tiene un vocabulario bastante asequible para cualquier nivel de inglés.

I just received Modern Manners today, and have spent over an hour perusing it. Although I admit I haven't read every word, I am very impressed with the book. The format is pleasing, interesting and makes for a quick reference for many situations.
