Robot Building For Dummies walks you through building your very own little metal assistant from a kit, dressing it up, giving it a brain, programming it to do things, and even making it talk.

In this hands-on guide that's illustrated with step-by-step instructions and written in plain English, you get an overview of robotics and the tools, technology, and skills you need to become a robot builder. You'll discover

  • The various approaches to robot building, such as building from scratch or starting with a kit
  • The mechanical parts of a robot and how they fit together
  • The components of an efficient workspace and how to set one up
  • Programming basics you need to enter and download commands into your robot
  • How to add a controller, which lets you download software programs to your robot
  • Using an editor program to connect to your robot

I must be honest, I have only read Chapers 1 and 2. The book looks very complete. He did get me started thinking about a kit. Mr Arrick gives several suggestion. He starts his first lesson with the robot kit The non programable soccer jr.I though this is great, i'll do it. But after checking a store or two, I found that I can no longer buy the Soccer Jr. I was disappointed.

What I expected! Purchased for my son who just went to robot camp. We have not dove in 100% yet, but we will. Thanks!

4.0 out of 5 stars A helpful read

Dummies books are almost always spot-on in their usefulness. I say almost only because some titles do go stale as technology advances. I need to update some of the titles in my library. But I digress. Mr. Arrick does a good job of introducing the concept of kit robotics to the curious. Focusing on a specific kit platform called the ARobot, we are led through it's simple construction then add-on projects. If you're ready to attempt a simple robot, this book is an excellent choice.

Great robot basics

15 years out of date

K. · April 23, 2018

Being published 15 years ago, this book is way out of date on Robotics. It's okay for the beginner (dummies) and a good insight into programming as it covers the basics as well as more advanced stuff but being American it's not much help for obtaining materials and kits for us Brits.
