Betty Crocker's Cook Book for Boys and Girls

Description:

Betty Crocker's classic cookbook for children is back-in an authentic reproduction of the original 1957 edition

A whole generation of Baby Boomers grew up with Betty Crocker's Cookbook for Boys and Girls, and they have helped to make it the one of the most requested titles in the Betty Crocker archives. Now back by popular demand, this timeless favorite stands ready to capture the hearts of a new generation of budding cooks. Packed with recipes that are just as popular with kids today as they were 45 years ago, it shows how to make everything from Ice Cream Cone Cakes and Pigs in Blankets to Cheese Dreams and Sloppy Joes. The small format, easy recipes, charming color illustrations and photographs, and even the cover, are all the same as they were in the 1957 edition-and just as delightful as ever. The only innovation is the concealed wire binding that lies flat for easy cooking while being sturdy enough to withstand energetic handling by kids in the kitchen. It's the ideal book to give or to keep, for retro appeal, and for getting today's kids started in the kitchen.

Now we have a 6 year old grandson who loves to help in the kitchen. I bought this as a Christmas gift for him. He’s a strong reader, so I’m sure he’ll enjoy picking out recipes to try.!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kids First Cookbook!

Bought one of these for my daughter when she was little (she is now in her 40s with little ones of her own) so grandma had to buy another one for her littles this time around too! Perfect for a young reader with momma around to help. And it gives them a sense of pride in creating something the whole family can enjoy! This is a copy of the original and it is wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful cookbook

K. · January 21, 2025

I loved this cookbook. There are recipes for breakfast, lunch, brunch, dinner, and desserts. The directions are clear and easy to follow and the foods are great for families. I think the 8 to 12-year-olds could follow the directions, but I think younger kids will need some supervision with recipes that require cooking on the stove or baking. All of the recipes include instructions that are important for safety. The pictures are old-fashioned, but fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars I spent many happy hours as a child reading this book

B.J. · December 4, 2016

I couldn't believe it when I saw that this cookbook is available as a "new" book (authentic reproduction) again. I received it - probably as a birthday gift? I don't remember - when I was a young child, about 50 years ago. I have always been a cookbook reader, and I spent many happy hours as a child reading this book. So when I saw that it was available again, I eagerly bought a copy for the sake of nostalgia. As an object of nostalgia, I would rate it 5 stars. It looks exactly like the original, and has the same durable and convenient hardcover spiral binding that I remember. Although if you look carefully, you can tell that the cover is from a "photo of a photo"; as the image isn't quite as crisp as an original would be. Also, the green glossy material used on the inside of the front & back covers was not in the original. However, everything else about the book is a perfect reproduction. As a 21st-century cookbook for children to use, I'd probably give it only 3 stars. There is a lot about cooking that has changed in the 60 years since this book was first published:* Our understanding of nutrition has improved significantly* We encounter a greater variety of ingredients, especially fresh produce, in our stores* Our food landscape has been enriched by many contributions from nearly every continent and every corner of the earth (I had definitely never heard of hummus or chiles rellenos when I used to read this book on lazy summer afternoons), and* Rather than seeing canned/highly processed foods as exciting miracles of modern culinary technology, we now see them as the less healthy and less tasty versions of food. This cookbook is definitely rooted in the food styles, tastes and knowledge of its mid-20th-century era. That being said, this was a very, VERY good children's cookbook for its era. The recipes are creative, attractive, and often whimsical. There is a LOT of information for a budding cook who doesn't want to just learn a particular recipe, but actually wants to learn how to cook - such as cooking methods and terminology, types of utensils, safety guidelines. It piques the interest through extras like the illustrations (including many gorgeous full-page color glossy photos of finished recipes) and the sidebar tips from the 12 kids who were the "Junior Testers" of all the recipes in the book. So, bottom line:1. If you are an adult who was in love with this book as a kid, buy it.2. If you are thinking of buying it for a child in your life today, I would say go ahead and buy it for its instructional value in the basics of cooking, but give the child a more contemporary children's cookbook at the same time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic -- Images of children are a bit dated but this is what it looked like

S.B. · June 27, 2021

I bought this for my grand-neice to show her what her granny was reading as a girl in the 1960's. The book has not been modified or modernized. I appreciate that they didn't try to update it or modernize it. It needs to be totally re-done. Honestly, that would be like installing airbags in a 1955 Chevy Bel-Air. This is "of an era" and what I would expect to see in the Smithsonian museum as a representation of the times. It has a few good recipes that kids would still eat now. Some of this stuff would not be attractive to kids back then either. The food pictures are spot-on in terms of the style of that era. The kids depicted in the book are not at all diverse and this book fails in that aspect. It succeeds in showing the food and the approach that was taken to interest children in cooking. The safety tips are still good and the techniques are still good. There are some recipes that are very challenging and I think it is good for kids to read those and aspire to making something more complex. Everything shouldn't be easy and and a cook needs to learn early that challenging recipes are accomplished by going step by step. Not recommended if you really want to teach modern methods to a diverse audience. It's more of a nostalgia piece and is still in tthe original mini-binder format. It's a winner in terms getting kids interested in cooking.

My daughter loves to help cook and bake so she was super excited to receive this book and can't wait to try some of the recipes. It is reprinted from the original 1957 version so the pictures and everything are from that era, which I love!

I found it on kindle recently and was thrilled to find that although the cover was different, the inside was exactly as my childhood copy.
