Wonderful jazz photo in U.S.A, Thank you so much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic black & white jazz images in all their sometimes grainy glory

K.W.H. · August 20, 2018

Love jazz? Then"Jazz in Available Light" really needs to be in your library.Shot with classic black and white film without flash, the images transport you to the stage, the nightclub, the festival in all their sometimes grainy (such was the film technology of the time) glory. In addition, the stories behind the photographs are just as compelling as the frames themselves.Veryl Oakland has plenty of additional unpublished images that cry out for a second edition, please!

4.0 out of 5 stars Jazz Muscians in Photos and Stories

This book is mostly a photography book of Jazz Musicians but there are also lots of wonderful stories. Many of the musicians will be familiar to even a casual fan. The photographs really capture the mystery of the musicians. I really enjoyed reading about the musicians as well about photographs. The photographer did a really good job of setting the time and place for the photographs. This book will make a great gift. Enjoy

3.0 out of 5 stars Gotta be a real jazz fan to get the most out of this.

K.C. · July 16, 2018

As you would expect with this title, there’s a LOT of black and white photos of men—and two women—with instruments, along with some biographic material on each. They’re mostly grainy and dark, and if this was strictly a photography book it wouldn’t be very impressive. As history, however, it works better. My most enjoyable chapter was on jazz violins. Also the drummers. But it takes someone who is a lot more of a jazz fan than I to appreciate this to its fullest.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Stunning Celebration

S.T. · September 5, 2024

Jazz in Available Light by Veril Oakland is a stunning celebration of both jazz and photography. Oakland masterfully captures iconic musicians like Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Ella Fitzgerald in their element, using only natural light to bring an intimate, almost magical feel to each image. The photos are crisp yet soulful, perfectly complementing the energy and improvisation of the jazz greats. Oakland's eye for timing and composition makes each shot feel like you're right there in the moment. This book is a must for any jazz lover or photography enthusiast—it’s pure visual jazz!

In an era that has become swamped with digital media, this tangible "coffee table book" filled with remarkable stories, in conjunction with stunning photography is a refreshing find. Growing up listening to jazz with my parents, and then coming upon Veryl Oakland's Jazz In Available Light, I found myself in rabbit holes with these musicians and the stories told in this book. The Jazz greats of the 60s, 70s and 80s covered in this epic are the best of the bunch - this is a fantastic purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars I received this book as a gift, and was in for a surprise!

I am not a big jazz fan, except for some of the classics by the greats. Reading this book opened my eyes to a whole new world! The in depth personal history of the performers was fascinating. Oakland’s writing is superb. He describes his travels, the atmosphere, the venue, so that the reader feels they’ve been there. This one is worth your time and money.
