The Age of Orion: The Lockheed P-3 Story

Description:

The Age of Orion is the first book devoted solely to the development and operational use of the illustrious USN maritime patrol and anti-submarine hunting aircraft the Lockheed P-3 Orion. David Reade details for the first time the complete history and walks you through all the different models, versions and variants. The book authoritatively establishes the Orion’s different configurations, roles and missions it performs, as well as describes its endless array of capabilities currently and into the future. Besides chronicling all of its international operators, and their future upgrade programs, The Age of Orion contains comprehensive and informative appendices, charts, graphs, and impressive illustrated Bureau Number Aircraft Location listing of every P-3 Orion in the world – this list is packed with additional historical data on any particular P-3 Orion. Over 280 color photographs illustrate all of the various U.S. Navy and foreign markings during the aircraft’s thirty-plus year history.

Review:

5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough and in-depth information about the Orion. Current through its publication date: 1997

w. · October 14, 2024

I particularly enjoyed reading more of the history and how the Orion evolved. The bureau number based information about each aircraft was interesting, even though it was only current as of ~1997.The book was well written with many quality photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing gift!

Proud Navy brat here. My dad is a retired CWO2 P3 flight engineer. I gave this to my dad for Father’s Day and he LOVES it. As he went through page by page, my brother and I listened slack jawed to even more stories about his 20 years of service. If you or a loved one has any experience with P3, get this book!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great gift for anyone who worked/served in, on, or around a P-3 Orion!

D. · April 3, 2021

My father flew on these during his years enlisted in the U.S. NAVY. He had extensive training as an i.f.t. and was also trained as an in-flight photographer. He flew mostly on and around the west coast/Pacific in V-P 4 “Skinny Dragons”. If anyone reading this review ever served in that same vector patrol squadron, please feel free to message me. I’m sure you and my father would have plenty of great stories to exchange. Who knows, you may have even flown together at some point or possibly on the same plane at different points in time. I got this for him as a thank you for a kindness he did for me and when I gave it to him I immediately knew he loved it because he couldn’t put it down. Considering the fact that his background included training as an in-flight photographer, the great many awesome photos in this book made him love it all the more. I would definitely recommend purchasing this book if you’ve ever worked in, on, or around a P-3 Orion, or want to gift it to someone who has. 5/5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long overdue

B. · January 19, 2014

The P3 Orion The Mighty Hunter - Son of Neptune - seriously the P3 Orion on which I have flown over 4000 hours, is one of the best, no, it is THE best Anti-Submarine Warfare ( ASW ) platforms to ever take to the skies. The P8 I doubt will ever fully replace the versatility of the Orion. This book is well overdue - and I hope another edition is produced when, sadly, the last Orion sortie is flown - it has such a rich history. This book goes part of the way - - and does so extremely well. If you have ever been rescued at sea after being located by one of these aircraft, or have sailed the high-seas - you were in a much safer place thanks to the Lockheed- Martin Orion. Read this book!
