Gives guidance on availability and prices of many antique and vintage typewriters. Although, this information is somewhat dated, the book provides an excellent base for the collector.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Sequel

M. · January 18, 2009

If you are interested in the history of the typewriter, stripped of its nationalistic slants, its inadequate or erroneous previous histories, and beautifully illustrated, you must add this book to your collection. A sequel, in a sense, to Adler's first book, this briefly touches on the historical background then details the great and not so great machines from the earliest inventors to the last. It's an important work about one of the most important technological developments of the last several hundred years. Here you see it, and are able to realize and appreciate it as a tool, an artwork, and a mechanical marvel. Be sure to read his first book as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars about typewriters and their history

J.M.C. · June 8, 2013

Michel Adler has done us a great favour by collecting antique typewriters and by conveying their history in such a learned and entertaining way. His amazing photos show that many of the antique writing machines were objects of great beauty and advanced mechanical ingenuity - especially the Malling-Hansen Writing Ball.

Fantastic resource. An encyclopedia for typewriter collectors, including their fascinating history. Two minor cavils: Many of the photos seem to be randomly placed throughout the book - they're often nowhere near their description. And (unavoidable in a book that was published in 1997), the estimated prices are out of date (although even here it will give you an idea of the relative values of different models).

For the computer buff!

It's about a different era of course but so interesting. A book that can be left on the shelf and read at those moments of nostalgia.
