Be warned. This is not a recipe book. This is not a catalog of techniques. It has no step-by-step guides to planning or conducting research. That's not what it is for.This is a book to help a methodologically reflective researcher survey a wide range of possible research approaches, pick a suitable position, get oriented, and start conducting intellectually coherent research. If that is something you need and value, this book will help you. It is a very clear and engaging read.As a design researcher I appreciate the method Crotty used to develop this book. He essentially employed UCD, iteratively writing, testing and improving the material prior to publishing it. I think this must have contributed to this book's success.

An excellent composition of philosophers that have provided pivotal paradigm shifts in how academia conducts qualitative research. Heavy but no burdensome in establishing the rhetoric and reasoning for various types of qualitative research: phenomenology, critical theory, positivism and post-positivism, hermeneutics, among other methodologies. Highly recommended reading even today.

This book is a great reading for those interesting in the Philosophy of Science and for graduate students that need to understand the philosophical foundation of science/research. It provides a great overview of the philosophical tendencies (paradigms) that exist in approaching research. It is a book I recommend to read with Guba's (1990) The Paradigm Dialog, and Kuhn's pioneer work (1962) The Structure of Scientific Revolutions.

This book can be a bit difficult to read, and many people I talk to have to read the chapters multiple times. Crotty presents an well written, well considered introduction to a range of epistemological foundations. This book is absolutely essential for any social science researcher, particularly those who are interested in better understanding the philosophies that underlie widely used research methods.

This is one of the best research books you will ever buy. It really gives you a lot to think about from a critical perspective and challenges you to fully understand yourself as a knowledge-creator. I strongly recommend it for any scholar.

Book that links methods and methodology in a way that makes sense
This is the best book I've ever read on research methods and methodology. It explains in plain English terms that are used in other text books and journal articles without explanations. It is a fantastic textbook for anyone involved in qualitative research and wanting to understand theoretical underpinnings of research better. It is also well written, not your standard a dry text book on research methods. It's a book that challenges you to think about the choices you make along the research process whilst keeping.If you are only going to buy one book on qualitative research methods this would be my recommendations. However if you are looking for step by step guide for doing qualitative research don't buy this book. This book gives you a framework to work with but requires you to think about the process of research and why you are doing what you are doing. It is the one book that kept me sane whilst doing my PhD...

The little best research book a student researcher could ever require
This is an excellent research resource, whether eBook or hard copy, if you are a student of any social research a must read, once you get over the language of the book which can complex, quite readable even at Honours level, but considering this book is targeted to Postgraduates of Masters by Research and PhD's they should be able to manage this complex language. Overall an excellent book that no researcher can do without, and should be a compulsory purchase for all research students.
