Michael Quinn Patton is author of more than a dozen books on evaluation including Qualitative Research & Evaluation Methods, 4th ed (2015), Blue Marble Evaluation (2020), Principles-Focused Evaluation (2018), Facilitating Evaluation (2018) and Developmental Evaluation (2011). Based in Minnesota, he was on the faculty of the University of Minnesota for 18 years and is a former president of the American Evaluation Association (AEA). Michael is a recipient of the Alva and Gunnar Myrdal Evaluation Practice Award, the Paul F. Lazarsfeld Evaluation Theory Award, and the Research on Evaluation Award, all from AEA He has also received the Lester F. Ward Distinguished Contribution to Applied and Clinical Sociology Award from the Association for Applied and Clinical Sociology. In 2021 he received the first Transformative Evaluator Award from EvalYouth. He is an active speaker, trainer, and workshop presenter who has conducted applied research and evaluation on a broad range of issues and has worked with organizations and programs at the international, national, state, provincial, and local levels. Michael has three children―a musician, an engineer, and an evaluator―and four grandchildren. When not evaluating, he enjoys exploring the woods and rivers of Minnesota, where he lives.

This is one of my most used research books and the first one I hand to my own students when they need a clear straight forward guide to doing qualitative research. It is a clearly written, even handed treatment of the major methods and their underlying methodoologies. It is accessible enough for undergraduates and compressive enough for doctoral and post-doctoral work.

This text is pragmatic and user-friendly. The author interjects humor and experience to help readers understand on a classroom level and not from a lofty (translate that to stuffy) viewpoint. I used it for a graduate level Qualitative Analysis course and will keep it to help me with future research. I highly recommend this book.

Written in a very easy to read style. Great examples and is the bestText on that specific subject that I have purchased and enjoyed reading.Has assisted me considerably in writing thesis on a phenomenological study.Was recommended by my Masters supervisor.

I enjoyed the book overall. I found the stories enlightening and intelligent, and the stories provided a nice context/backstory for the research Patton discusses. In that sense it is a good intro book for qualitative methods, and I found his discussion on qualitative evaluation more helpful than the discussion on basic or applied qualitative research. I found it to be a bit limiting when I set out to actually do the research in that the book disn't provide enough guidance in the work of analysis. More guidance on the actual process of analysis would have been very helpful. In addition, I found much of the discussion on the use of technology a bit dated and overly light in some ways, such as Patton's discussion on the traps that researchers can fall into in data collection when using computer programs.

Dr. Patton is one of the masters of qualitative research. The book is thick, but the writing is very clear. The book should be required reading for all doctoral students and researchers doing qualitative research.

Patton writes mainly for the graduate student, yet his book presents the research in a very easy to read format. The book is very informative and provides a great deal of with vital knowledge including questions, quotes, and other formats to give the student subjects to reflect upon.

I am sure the content of this book is exceptional - as a former academic colleague recommended it and Patton being noted as an expert in the field of qualitative research and evaluation methods; however, it did not meet my needs at all when it comes to understanding the depth of the purpose statement in research analysis. As for the customer care I received from this seller, it was as always EXCEPTIONAL. The book was new and received in a sealed blister wrap. And, if they have other resource materials I need to purchase, I will definitely purchase from Ms Whitefield. Thank you or the timely order.
Good help for my researchs
This book helps me to conduct effective user research, and provides good interview tips. In a further version, a few more exemples would be nice.

Exceptional Resources
This researcher drills down into detail in a lexicon that is easy to relate to, never diminishes me as a learner, and provides lots of food for thought and ideas on practising qualitative research methods before having to actually implement them. Such a relief to get Patton (2003) to go along with Creswell (2012) and Merriam (2009). He, like Merriam, is the meat on the bones.

This book is beautifully written, full of useful examples and very, very useful. It has a wider range of information than any other book I am using, including the concept of emergent research design.
