5.0 out of 5 stars A fun, body-positive way to learn about puberty

C. · March 1, 2018

puberty can be confusing, daunting, embarrassing, even scary when it's looming in front of you as this great unknown, this book is the perfect gift for any young girl who has questions or feels nervous about what's happening to their changing body. written with humor and honesty, and omiting any suggestion that a girl should be embarrassed about things like her period, this is the book i wish i had growing up. i've purchased it for three of my nieces (the youngest is 9, the oldest is 13) and all three found it to be reassuring, informative, and even fun to read! (my 11 yr old niece usually cannot be convinced to read anything, but she blew through this book!) and all three felt much less nervous about the changes going on, or soon to happen to them.the information is frankly, but kindly, presented and fact-checked by a doctor. the illustrations are beautiful, informative and quirky, and the girls represented are a great spectrum of personalities and body types so that any reader can feel like she has someone to relate to, no matter what she looks like, how she feels about what's happening to her, or how quickly she's developing (or not).i definitely recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A body-positive, inclusive, witty and matter-of-fact puberty book...FINALLY

E. · December 22, 2017

This book made growing up sound like so much fun, I almost longed for the awkward days of puberty. Just kidding. The book WAS fun though. While informative, the author uses a friendly, casual tone and a cast of several girls (and boys) to deliver information that has simultaneously engrossed and repelled kids for years. Reading it as an adult made me wish that there had been a book like this for my friends when we were stumbling through the 80's. You can see from the image that the book resembles a well-loved notebook, thankfully without the word PERIOD emblazoned across the front like a book I used to know. Parents, you can also get book socks for your kids to give them the feeling that what they are reading is private. The back of this book indicates that it's recommended for ages 8-12. I would extend that age range as teens could still benefit from the information in this book. I also wouldn't wait for a child to request this book. Just buy it, and place it somewhere that they can get to it without a big production when they are ready for this information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing puberty book if you want to have a real discussion

H.G. · March 28, 2020

We borrowed this book from the library when my daughter was 9. It is very informative but in a fun way. My daughter liked it so much I bought her own copy. It's her resource for puberty and still looks at different things each week almost a year later. We initially read it together so I could answer any questions. She also shares it with her younger brothers. And they have a preview of what puberty will look like for themselves when they get older sincr it civers boys too. It also does a nice job of having diverse points of views from the girls with different options they can decide like to shave your legs or not, its your choice. The characters are also diverse. We have recently borrowed another puberty book from the library and my daughter commented it didnt have anything new this book didn't cover.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative

5.0 out of 5 stars Best puberty book for ages 9-13!

A.C. · July 18, 2018

Best puberty book out there for 9-13 year old girls!!! I have searched for books to give my 9yo daughter that would help explain puberty and her period and it had been surprisingly difficult to find a good book. Most of the most popular books are very negative and use terms like "there's going to be A LOT of blood" that would cause more fear and dread! I also wanted a book that explains about body and emotional changes without getting into sex (that can be a separate book), because I think kids can get easily overwhelmed with getting too much information all at once. This book was written in a style that would appeal to preteens (without trying to be "too cool") and has a positive message about people's bodies looking different and developing at different rates. I would highly recommend this book to parents and tweens!

I got this book for my foster daughter and her friends, and because I'm shuttling them around weekly at least, I keep it in the back of my car. Without fail this group of girls ages 10-12 look at and ask each other questions. It's taken A LOT of mystery out of bodies, and it's generated a lot of healthy chats between them and with me. It's put together in a very engaging way for both readers and nonreaders. They each get something out of it, and while I do overhear a lot of giggling and comparisons of themselves to the pictures, I really like that they're learning how their bodies work and how boys' bodies work, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars My daughter has read this

F.L. · October 7, 2020

I got this book for my 9 year old (our family develops early) after it was suggested by several of my mom friends. She loved it, it was very informative and fun. We have been talking over these topics a few times and it helped her figure out what she wanted to ask questions about. It also gave her another description and explanation for several things, I know there were some that I gave her that were confusing her. She suggests this book for other girls that are beginning to mature to read while they talk to their mothers (or whomever).

Her body changing, boys 🙄, and let’s say her attitude too... 😂But when Mommy tried talking to her about the change it was embarrassing. That’s when I found this book...I told her the book is full of secrets just for her.If she wanted to talk to me, share or ask any questions she’s more than welcome. She was truly excited! She reads it every night and ask questions when one pops up!This book is a life saver

Inappropriate content, especially for Catholics

B. · May 5, 2018

This is book is well-written, from the easy-to-identify-with retrospective perspective of a gang of 12 (now 16) year old girls. However, as a Catholic, there are numerous objectionable items in the book, which cause me to return it. I've listed them below, and provided pictures of some relevant pages.Normalisation of masturbation (page 103)Breast stimulation, clitoral stimulation for pleasure (page 82, 102)Birth control (page 100)Mentions of gay fathers, transgender feelings, same-sex feelings (page : 21, 23, 27, 51, 122, 144, 148, 182, 192)This book is very graphic in its images, there are many graphic images of breasts and naked images of a male and female body to show the progressive changes during their puberty journey.

Perfect for early starters

S.J. · September 4, 2021

This book is great fun, a story of girls from bunk 9 giving advise on all the womanly changes that happen to us females. My eldest daughter is just 9 and we noticed she had started showing signs of puberty, we read a couple of pages a week and it’s helping her understand a little.I chose this book due to reviews and most importantly no discussions of detailed sex ( which for us was a no go with a 9 year old who just needs to know about body changes, that discussion can wait another few years!)

My daughter and I loved it

A.M. · March 13, 2023

It's a fairly easy read, especially for a 9 year old. Enough to give her a good understanding of her body and posed as a story to keep her interested. Something we can read together or she can flip through on her own. I looked at a bunch of these books and an so happy I chose this one.

Useful book for 8-12 year olds

N. · June 2, 2021

This is great book, wish there had been a guide like this when I was younger. It's written in teenage voices, so very relatable and funny. The narrators are now camp counselors, but it talks about the summer they spent at camp as younger girls, a chapter from the boys too. It's very accessible. Each chapter deals with a different part of puberty, and is broken down further using bullet points, little add-on notes, pictures, etc.

Very appropriate and fun for age 8-10 girls

C.P. · July 27, 2020

Perfect for my curious 8 year old daughter. She is very excited to have a ‘secret’ book that she hides under her pillow to read up on all things ‘girly’ and with regards to puberty. Well written and age appropriate. Thorough but not too descriptive (about sex) for what an 8 year old needs to know, in my opinion.
