Ann Swanson's Meditation for the Real World makes meditation instantly accessible for anyone. It's a thoroughly researched book that explains, in simple and direct language, the relevance and benefits of meditation, how and why meditation works, what kinds of mental, emotional, and physical challenges meditation can help us overcome, and a wide range of techniques for practicing meditation under almost any circumstances. Swanson succeeds in being both meticulously comprehensive and easily comprehensible at the same time. I especially like her "Myth Busters," which dispense with false assumptions that may have us believing that we can't practice meditation or shouldn't bother trying. And the book is so clearly organized and beautifully laid out that it's easy to find the sections that speak specifically to any individual need. Kudos to the illustrator, too. I've been practicing yoga and meditation for over 40 years, teaching both for 15 years, and I don't know of a more complete and practical guide to meditation than this one. It totally lives up to its title - I highly recommend it.

“Meditation for the Real World: Finding Peace in Everyday Life” challenges traditional notions of meditation, presenting it as an accessible tool for everyone, not just seasoned practitioners. As someone who rarely meditates, I was intrigued by the book’s approach to observing thoughts rather than clearing the mind, a concept that felt surprisingly achievable. The visual layout of meditation techniques—presented like a bingo board—made the practice engaging and approachable, emphasizing body awareness and mindful movement, which appealed to my need for getting out of my head and into my body.One personal experiment with the book’s advice on acupressure for seasickness was particularly enlightening. Though it didn’t cure my seasickness entirely, the technique notably lessened the severity, offering a practical application of the book’s broader principle of body influencing mind.The book’s focus on the science behind meditation, explaining how it can reduce mind wandering and enhance focus, struck a chord with me. It offered practical steps towards harnessing attention in a world rife with distractions, making a compelling case for incorporating meditation into daily life to cultivate a sense of presence and satisfaction.“Meditation for the Real World” is more than a guide; it’s an invitation to reframe our engagement with our minds and bodies, proving that mindfulness can be a powerful ally in navigating life’s challenges. It’s a testament to the book’s value that even a skeptic like me found meaningful insights and tools to address everyday issues, from restlessness to the overwhelming tides of information that often sweep us away.

This is a beautiful book that is full of incredibly accessible language and accessible practices. The author makes the science of meditation and various practices very concise and easy to grasp. This book is full of engaging, simple, and profound meditation practices. As a yoga therapist in training, the knowledge in this book is a huge gift to all yoga professionals and to our clients. It is very clear that the author is grounded in both the real-life applications of yoga in everyday situations AND the research backed science to go with these practices. I absolutely recommend this book for those that are meditation curious all the way to those that are actively teaching and sharing meditation with others.

I thought I wasn’t able to meditate before I bought this book, because my mind always wanders, but the author helped me understand how to accept stray thoughts and move forward. The author understands that many of us feel overwhelmed by everyday life and includes meditations you can “stack” onto everyday habits you already practice, to bring a bit of peace to your busy days. My favorite meditation so far is her advice for meditating with a pet, so now I can combine my tiny dog’s favorite activity— sitting on my lap — with meditating! Her meditation to soothe a headache has also been incredibly helpful. “Meditation for the Real World” is thoughtfully written, thoroughly researched, and beautifully illustrated. Highly recommended — you’ll want to reach for this book over and over.

FINALLY—a book for the rest of us.I rarely write reviews but I am so sick of the high and mighty “one size fits all” propaganda that seems to dominate the world of meditation guides these days. This is not that.If you’re a burnt out tech worker, a stressed and overworked parent, or an anxious and depressed retail employee…this book is for you.Most of us don’t have the luxury to drop everything for a “van life” adventure or go on an extended meditation retreat. The author gets real about the challenges of finding peace and mindfulness in the chaos of daily life, especially when you’re stressed out and just trying to get through the day.Full of practical tips and relatable ways to reconnect with yourself, de-stress, and feel human again.It’s rare to find a meditation book that doesn’t make you feel inadequate for not living up to an idealized vision of calm and serenity. No one has time for that. This book gives you the tools to find that calm within your own, perfectly imperfect life—whatever that looks like for you.Since reading, I’ve started to notice small, positive changes in my daily life, like increased focus and a greater sense of calm amidst my daily grind.This book is a must-read for anyone who’s ever felt intimidated by meditation in the past or thought it wasn’t for them. Easy digestible assistance for meditation
Love this book - it is step by step and easy to follow. Also that if one practice doesn't suit, you havent failed just try another one. So many different meditations to try. I also love the size and style format of the book plus the supportive app. Thanks for making meditation accessible to everyone 🙏

As someone who’s used to guided audio meditations, I was intrigued by how it would actually work to meditate from a book instead of through an audio recording. I’ve found it to be such a different but more profound experience! Even though I had been meditating for years, I found myself mind-wandering a lot more but Ann’s insights on how the cycle of focused attention works kept me coming back, and I’m so glad I did! I’m overall feeling more calm and less anxious. It works!!I keep this book on my bedside table so it’s easy for me to reach for during my 15-minute morning meditation. My favourite thing to do is open the book on a random page every morning, read the description and practice.Not only is the content amazing, but it’s also a beautiful book with calming illustrations and lovely colours that allow you to feel more calm and grounded from the moment you pick it up. At least it has that effect on me!Oh, and I’ve also been doing the free meditation challenge Ann gives as a bonus when purchasing the book and it’s been such a great addition! Highly recommend you register for that on Ann’s website after purchasing your copy ❤️

A very beautiful book, consise, full of pieces of advice. It can be used as a "wardrobe": instead of saying 'what clothes I wear today', it will be 'what meditation I practice today'.😄Lovely work, thanks!

I love this book, it s accessible, complete, science based. I bought another book from Ann S. and currently doing a training with her, she is the best💛 she is very passionate about her work, very dedicated, very professionnal, compassionate, kind etc. Love her, her work, her books and training.
