“In its 165 pages, the book manages to pack in a heap of information and Jack is sensible in acknowledging that some things may be urban myths or that we simply don’t know their true origins. As well as a standard index, there is a listing by postcode which I think is a splendid idea in these days of phone maps. Beautifully illustrated by Katherine Fraser… A great addition to the library of London loves.”
―The London Society".a really enjoyable book: the research is wide ranging, and Jack’s knowledge and enthusiasm is infectious… an ideal gift for anyone starting to ask questions about this wonderful city.”
―Hornsey Historical Society“If you love London, if you love history, if you love walking – you will love Jack’s book. If you have only a slight interest in any of these, by the time you have finished the first section – your curiosity to learn more will have been piqued. Bravo Jack Chesher – this is a book that will have a permanent place on our shelves. All Londoners and visitors to London ought to have a copy too.”
―Lady Lewis“If you wish to own just one reference about London, you could do no better than purchasing this sumptuously produced book.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Discover things you would have never seen!
This is a great little walking tour guide and the illustrations are lovely. I have taken his tours and would also recommend. These are tours of parts of London and highlights places and little details you would have never known. It’s fascinating but not a whole city guide. This is for the curious off the beaten track (within a city!) traveler. Great to just read.
5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful Book!
As a frequent visitor and admirer of all that is London, I loved this book. It is well written, no detail is boring or over-used and all of the topics/areas that are discussed are easily accessible. The test of any book like this is whether it is a solid read when the reader is thousands of miles away. It is.The construct of the book is well-broken up and is incredibly well thought out. This book makes a good case for paper and print and less walking around by phone or tablet. It forces the reader through well detailed and relevant content to read through and plan a visit to a city that is not only old but constantly changing. My favorite parts were the bits of Roman history (by the way). Bravo!!
5.0 out of 5 stars A treasure hunt for fans of London and history
After a semester in London in the late 70s and several other visits, I wanted the non-tourist stuff. I've followed @livinglondonhistory on Instagram for a few years, so bought the book in anticipation. In four days in London I was able to do most of three of the four walking tours in the book, starting with (photo) St. Ghastly the Grim.I saw and learned things I'd not otherwise have ever noticed and loved every step. I found remembering the direction of the Thames from my location--plus a Navigation app on my phone)--helped follow the maps and not get turned around. The crypt under the church with Roman bricks, the roman wall near The Tower, and the mice!!!! I was walking up and down this small side street looking up, when a young man at the entrance to an office building parking space asked "are you looking for the mice?" It was such fun--clearly others had been before me doing the same. Made me happy. No idea if I'll get back to London in this decade, but have Jack's next book on pre-order just in case. THANK YOU, Jack, from making history live.
5.0 out of 5 stars Informative travel book
Very cute travel book of London with little snippets of history. Great for pre-trip research and planning out interest points!
4.0 out of 5 stars Find the lesser known spots in London
This is a fun book. I've been to London several times, and bought this to help me find unusual and little-known corners. I like that it gives the history of the place. Recommended if you want to see things other than the Tower Bridge and London Eye!
5.0 out of 5 stars The book that fulfilled my dream
This is the book that gave me the final push to check off my bucket list item.I’d always wanted to visit the UK and in particular London, but never really thought I’d actually do it. For some reason this book was pitched to me as an Instagram ad and something about it really caught my attention. Once I’d bought it, a random thought put the gears in motion- “if you’re going to buy a book about exploring London, why not go there and use the book?” And after a few weeks thinking about it and just casually checking the price of airfare for kicks, I realized that if I planned and saved up, I could totally do it. So I did. This book is absolutely top notch. I think my favorite part is that it usually gets you away from the tourist areas and sends you into the historic innards of the city. I had an absolute blast picking out areas of interest and I realized I was getting a really good and effortless understanding of London’s layout in a very quick period of time. I felt like I got my moneys worth not just of the book but of the trip. I used very few resources beyond this guide. It’s an S tier book; buy it, and go explore!
5.0 out of 5 stars So enjoyable!
London is such a great place to visit and live, and this book brought me right back there. Actually, it brought me many new locations and ideas to learn about! It’s interesting, fun, informative, and well written. The book feels lovely in the hand, the illustrations are beautiful, and it’s just a sensory joy to read. I’m so glad I pre-ordered it last year and so had it to look forward to ever since. I have not been disappointed!

A snapshot of hidden history in plain sight on London's streets
If like me you have lived in London for many years, and wondered about the small details on buildings, statues or their history then this book is for you. It provides a well-written overview of those sites, helping to bring the past to life, and has inspired me to learn more about many of the buildings.I also loved the watercolour illustrations included for many of the locations.
