5.0 out of 5 stars Another win for Alan Gratz!
My son and I have read every Alan Gratz book together. We love his books, so needless to say we pre-ordered this one and we couldn’t wait to get it. Got it this morning and read the first chapter out loud together in the car. It’s already so good and we both can’t wait to find out what happens next. I love how Alan Gratz makes the main characters relatable to the reader yet throws them into tragic events of the past allowing the reader to really get a sense of what it must have been like during that time. It gives a perspective on history that most never consider. You never want to put his books down either because every chapter leaves you eager to know what happens next. I think it’s brilliant to write a historical fiction in the context of an Olympic athlete at the time of Nazi Germany. Kids these days are into the Olympics and find it fascinating. Getting the perspective of a kid their own age and what it must have been like to be an athlete in the Olympics alone is interesting, but then compounding that with the time period. Just wow! I find it so dynamic.

My son couldn’t put it down.
5.0 out of 5 stars The King of Middle School Historical Fiction
Alan Gratz does it yet again. While there are real characters and historically accurate events in this book, the plot is entirely the imagination of Gratz. It will excite and captivate middle level readers while educating them about the rise of the Nazis during the 1930s. It couldn’t be a more perfect book for what we are living through today.
3.0 out of 5 stars A promising hook to get readers exposed to WW2 History, civil rights, advocacy, and social justice
This book captivates with some strong elements and through the Olympics narrative. However, I felt the stories could easily overwhelm younger readers by the sheer range of topics covered, from pre-WW2 Berlin architecture and street names, to the dust bowl, discrimination of African Americans in the USA in comparison to pre-WW2 Germany's treatment of minorities and people of color. My 11-year-old son, who is mostly a fan of Dog man, comics, and Big nate (admittedly low brow), enjoyed this book, but needed to have large portions of it read to him aloud because of the frequent use of foreign vocabulary (rendezvous, Liebchen, Reichsbank) and generally challenging vocabulary and concepts ("a warren of empty offices," "plume of water," "wry grin."). As an 11-year-old, this book would have been devoured by me in 2 days, but for the more highly average or less confident reader, this book can be enjoyed, within the right environment or if a parent, relative, teacher, or tutor can help support reading through the more technical sections (i.,e., it was a bit hard to follow all of the engineering feats in the bank vault scenes). While this book could have benefitted from a reduction of background noise and sub-plots, it managed to captivate my son, who has typically avoided historical fiction. We were very motivated to read this, as our relatives lived in pre-WW2 Berlin, and managed businesses that were overtaken by Nazis. From that respect, I am thankful the book served the purpose of gaining my son's attention and piquing his interest to learn more.
5.0 out of 5 stars Broad appeal
There are so many draws to Alan Gratz’s War Games — historical fiction, Olympics, WWII, bank heist, racial discrimination, adventure and mystery. There’s practically something for everyone. And in true Gratz style, War Games is a book some unexpected twists that make you think about the world around you in different ways.At the center of the story is Evie, an American gymnast who is desperate to win a gold medal and save her family, which has been left destitute by the Dust Bowl. Evie is smart and determined and just the right amount of daring. Through her, readers are introduced to a time and place where nothing was quite as it seemed.Gratz is excellent and setting a scene and getting you emotionally involved. He makes you invested and provides parallels to modern-day life. His writing is accessible and his pacing spot-on. If you’re looking for a gift or just a good read, you can’t go wrong with War Games.
