I was recently selected to complete a graduate program in history, so I purchased this book to help focus my efforts at developing a graduate thesis. This volume is a great intro to what it means to be a historian. It is also packed full of practical advice for how to approach historical inquiry and structure a historical research project of any scale (paper, thesis, dissertation, book, etc.) I would heartily recommend this book for any graduate student of history who is looking for practical advice. I would also suggest it for any undergraduate who is considering applying for a history graduate program in order to explore what it means to be a historian.

I'm considering writing a family history, but I do not have any training. I didn't even take a history course in college. This book is easy to read and straight forward in its guidance for how to approach researching history. It discusses various sources with their pros and cons, pitfalls to avoid, and compromises that you'll inevitably have to make. I highly recommend it for any amateur historian -- and probably for any undergrad too.

I have not completed the book yet, but from an overview and a reading of the first few chapters the book is a comprehensive, up to date, salient, and extremely informative guide on carrying out historical research. I am using it for a project I am working on. The author provides exceptional insight in defining and developing strategies and cultivating the appropriate mindset in tackling projects involving historical research.

I can't imagine a better overview on the topic of historical research and writing. Exactly what I was looking for. Wide in scope, generous with specifics, yet light and brief enough to take in quickly. I suspect this will be the type of book I return to many times as a reference, and I may come back and order a physical copy to go along with the ebook.

I’m not a historian. I’m a politically scientist. However, I do historically adjacent research. This book has improved the quality of that research. I also plan on using this book for my high school world history curriculum. It demystifies a process that can be anxiety inducing. Highly recommend.

Let me start positively by saying the book is not completely useless but not to far from it. Having said that it seems every historical concept he mentions he gives examples for, has to be about some opressed group. He cant go a page or two without mentioning slavery or Irish immigrants or... It seems he is almost incapable of giving examples that dont have to do with opression. This is a stark example of our victim culture and this professor is the sterotype many have for a liberal academic. A part of history is correcting wrongs and helping the opressed but when it is almost every example it leads the reader to wonder how much of the book is influenced by his CLEAR and OBVIOUS liberal bent and how accurate it can be with these examples being such an example of victim culture.It is difficult to take seriously someone who is either unwilling or not capable of giving examples from every walk of life and not just the "social justice warrior" movement.

This is a really good book and covers the key necessities. However what was annoying is the most of the examples used are from the USA. I don’t think this is good enough given that such a book is targeted to an international readership.
