5.0 out of 5 stars Magic and Cats
What could be better than a book about Magic and Cats? The book was enchanting. A must read for those who like both.
4.0 out of 5 stars A charming love letter to cats!
This one is absolutely for the cat lovers! I adored it - it's whimsical, funny, and a touch dark! It's got a good amount of stakes amidst staying true to the vibes of cozy fantasy. The magic that comes into play with the cat shelter and Havelock's Artefacts was enchanting and fun to learn about through little details that get revealed through Havelock and Yannick as they explained things to Agnes. I just loved the magic - it's simple but fun.I got the sense of a few story arcs going on: Agnes working on/running the cat shelter, Havelock battling with his sister, and two subplots (one with Agnes and Havelock's romance, and one with Agnes grappling with grief over losing Robin).- As for Agnes and the cat shelter, my heart was full every time that plotline took the forefront. The cats are EVERYTHING! Each cat in the shelter has a personality, and the way Agnes fights so hard for them to be okay is heartwarming. I loved the occasional scenes of customers coming into the shelter and 'matching' with a cat! In general, Agnes is just absolutely living for and finding her purpose through the cats, and the way she disregards quite literally everything (no matter the danger) just to put them and their safety/needs first is both humorous and endearing. The cats can do no wrong (even His Majesty).- In terms of Havelock and his sister, this and the cat shelter arc are the plots driving the story forward. The emotions and tension between them I could feel, and getting their backstory through Havelock's solemn recounting to Agnes made me hurt for him. The poor guy just wanted to be close to his sister and impress her, but she had to go and want to destroy the world. Just like Agnes cares for the cats, Havelock similarly still cares for Valerie no matter how terrible she is. It speaks to a lot of relationships between siblings, but it also speaks to Havelock's character.- The two subplots were intriguing, but I did feel like they could have been developed a bit more. The romance between Havelock and Agnes was cute and a slow-burn, but it felt a bit empty. It didn't feel as though there was a ton of substance or depth to it. Similarly, Agnes' grief over losing Robin felt underdeveloped, too. It didn't seem to have a super meaningful effect on Agnes' character or the plot, and I think everything would've been the same if those few mentions/scenes of Robin were left out.I think the arcs of the shelter and Havelock's battle with his sister and the world came together really well, and I really enjoyed the ending! I liked how Agnes came to change her views on magic, and her building involvement with it, as well as her impact on the ending, was engaging and fun to follow! The pacing wasn't super consistent throughout the story, with the beginning and ending being the strongest and the middle dragging, but I was really gripped by the start and finish. The characters themselves were great, too! Like I mentioned, Agnes is both adorable and entertaining. She's got good banter/wit and so much love for the cats and people around her; she's always trying to find the best in people, and I admired that about her. She grows a lot throughout the story in terms of her views and determination/action. I REALLY loved Havelock as a character, but that said, I wanted/needed more of him. He was enigmatic yet charming, shrouded in notoriety and lore that wasn't the whole truth. I was glued to him when he was on the page, and I couldn't get enough of the details about him. I wish his character got some more page time and wasn't always off and away on tasks. I think that also would've added more to their romantic relationship. The side characters were fun, too! Elise, Yannick, and the cats were quite the gang of companions, and Valerie was a great villain! There is a good message that comes across about challenging your beliefs and not believing what you hear about people just because it's the popular story. Thanks to Del Rey and NetGalley for letting me read early!
5.0 out of 5 stars delightful
If you loved Emily Wilde and Howl’s Moving Castle, you’ll love this original and charming new book from Heather Fawcett!
5.0 out of 5 stars Trust me, you need to read this book.
This book gets all the stars from me. I was ridiculously nervous to read Agnes Aubert, because I love the Emily Wilde series so dearly; all three are on the list of my top ten favorites books, ever. So I had very, very high hopes for this book, but I was also afraid I might not enjoy it as much as Emily Wilde; and I put off reading my early review copy for (frankly) an embarrassingly long time.Reader, I should have trusted the story-telling skill of the amazing Heather Fawcett and not have been concerned at all, because of course this book was just as amazing as the Emily Wilde trilogy; and against all odds, it may have even slipped past my beloved Emily & Wendell to become my favorite Heather Fawcett title yet.Agnes Aubert needs a new rental property for her cat shelter after an illegal wizard dual on her street destroyed their previous building. Unfortunately, few landlords are willing to risk renting out space to multiple cats. When a suspiciously nice, suspiciously cheap (possibly magic?) building becomes available, Agnes takes the lease out of shear desperation. The shop has some idiosyncrasies, but it’s a wonderful space for the cats, so Agnes ignores anything remotely magical and soon the cat shelter is running beautifully… until she finally meets her mysterious landlord, and is appalled to discover he is the infamous Havelock Renard, a powerful wizard nicknamed the “Witch King” after he cast a spell to end the world years earlier (and, thankfully, failed). But even dark wizards have enemies, and soon Agnes finds herself caught up in his world of dangerous magic. As she begrudgingly agrees to help Havelock (just for the sake of the cats, of course…), she discovers that the dark wizard is not really who the world thinks he is; and perhaps, the real magic is in second chances.I loved everything about this book, from the atmosphere to the characters to the message... and of course, the cats. First off, the atmosphere: if you love Studio Ghibli movies, specifically Howl’s Moving Castle, you will love this book. The whimsy, the found family, the adorable animal companions, the deep underlying emotion sprinkled with funny moments, the hope and bravery in the face of darkness; Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter is the most Studio Ghibli-esque book I’ve ever read, and I adored it. I also loved that the story was set in Montreal, and you can tell Heater Fawcett loves this city by the way she describes it.Next, the characters! I loved the characters in this book; even the side characters felt so real and important to me as I read, but of course Agnes and Havelock were my favorites. Agnes is the sort of person who can’t help but help others-family, strangers, cats (…failed dark wizards). She is intensely organized and lives her life by a series of all-important checklists, running the cat shelter with near-military precision. As type-A as she is, she is also a quietly but deeply emotional person who cries, laughs, and blushes easily. She throws herself into the cat shelter with such abandon partially as a coping mechanism for grieving her deceased husband, Robin; and a large part of her character journey in this book is an exploration of the slow process of healing from grief, and how it changes us forever. Heather Fawcett’s tender portrayal of Agnes’ complicated feelings about the coexistence of past love with the possibility of new love was a truly beautiful part of this book, and left me deeply emotional at times. Agnes is in some ways an unexpected heroine, and I loved her. Now, our MMC, Havelock Renard! I have to tell you, I deeply loved Havelock. He was the epitome of a very specific type of character that I always, always adore in fiction: the powerful, arrogant, extremely-good-at-heart-but-in-over-his head wizard. I always love these characters; I don’t really know why. Whether it’s Howl Pendragon, Jonathan Strange, or Elias Wilder, if there is a too-powerful-for-his-own-good wizard in the story, I’m immediately there for it (bonus points if he’s a sarcastic grouch). Which of course means that I loved Havelock. However, while I can add him to my list of favorite fictional wizards, I didn’t find Havelock a one-dimensional character in any way; and the longer Agnes (and therefore, the reader) knows him, the more a very different personality than the one he projects to the world becomes apparent. I won’t say much else to avoid spoilers, but I did absolutely love Havelock, and I can’t wait for other readers to meet him. (And, if any of these readers are artists, create fanart of Agnes & Havelock? Please?)We absolutely cannot move on from talking about characters without mentioning the cats! This is firmly a book written by someone who owns and loves cats, and as a cat owner myself I was delighted with each and every cat in this story. I especially loved His Majesty and Banshee; I own a cat who is very similar to Banshee, so I frequently found myself grinning through each passage she graced. There are many wonderful cat characters in this book, and if you are a cat-lover, you will really enjoy that aspect of the story. If I had to sum up the message of the book, I would say that it’s about second chances-second chances for love, for life-direction, for lost alley cats, and even a second chance to stop the end of the world. And speaking of second chances- I would love for this story to be continued; if Heather Fawcett writes any more stories about Agnes and Havelock, I will read them all.Overall, this is a beautifully life-affirming book, filled with so much hope and heart; and I have a sneaking suspicion that Heather Fawcett might be a wizard herself to write books like she does. I would recommend Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter to everyone, truly; but especially to fans of Howl’s Moving Castle and Half a Soul, as well as to readers who love chaotic wizards, Studio Ghibli-esque stories, and of course, cats.Thank you to NetGalley & Del Rey books for the digital arc!
