“Far more than a coda to a magnificent career . . . Anne McLean’s marvelous rendering of García Márquez’s posthumous Until August continues the tradition, immersing us in the dreamy richness of the author’s fictional worlds, amid characters pummeled by the demands of marriage, family and the dead . . . McLean’s nuanced translation harkens back to the maestro’s canonical novels while evoking, in a composition as tight as a Rembrandt portrait, the ache of human need.” —Minneapolis Star Tribune
“García Márquez should be read because he is so influential a writer, one who remodelled his country’s perception of itself and reshaped its literature and that of the wider world . . . Yet more than this, unlike so many other ‘great writers,’ his books are enjoyable. Inventive storytelling comes with indelible characters and arresting images served up with episodes of sharp psychological acuity . . . Love—ecstatic, forbidden, transgressive and especially between older people—is one of his great subjects . . . Until August is inventively enjoyable and working to its surprising, pleasing ending. I read it straight through in one sitting, then got up the next day and did it again.” —The Times (London)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brief Captivating Glimpse Into Desire and Constraint
Until August by Gabriel García Márquez is a short read, fewer than 80 pages, but it captivates completely. Through Anna Magdalena, the reader is transported into the frustrations of being a married woman tethered to a cheating husband in a calculatedly loveless marriage. With family problems of children forging their own path, and the lack of time to maintain togetherness. Her mother, in death, gifts her a kind of freedom, almost a permission to steal joy for herself once a year. And so Anna carefully chooses her August escapes, seeking brief reprieves that keep her soul alive. The story captures the context of its time. Divorce was rarely an option, especially within Hispanic culture. In a time when women still couldn’t hold their own bank accounts. Anna’s choices reflect the quiet rebellion of women like her, women who loved and sacrificed, yet searched for a fragments of happiness beyond what society allowed. Each August became a quest to touch once more the joy she had known, each year chasing the memory of what once was or possibly what never was… With flawed male suitors, who even are main character understands continuously, regardless of who disappoint her at every turn. So by catching every piece of fleeting joy, she does what she can to own her power and choice. It truly makes the reader question is cheating the wrong choice? It is beautifully written, an intimate world drawn in so few pages that still leaves you breathless. Proof that a story doesn’t need length to be powerful. Like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, its brevity doesn’t diminish its impact, it strengthens it. Though the offer faced his own personal turmoil, in terms of preventing the completion of the story, the beauty of it being left incomplete truly makes it even more captivating.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but short
79 pages hardly qualifies as "a novel." But I did enjoy the story. And perhaps the story benefited from not being long and overly complicated.I have a big complaint against Bolo though. I downloaded this Kindle edition less then an hour after it became available, and even that early Bolo's promo page said Goodreads 627 ratings. As if 627 people had already zipped through a 79-page story and written reviews in under 60 minutes??? Nonsense. As noted in a New York Times report by Alexandra Alter, published this past December, Goodreads is full of reviews posted under fake accounts which are meant to boost or sink books that have not even been published yet. Bolo, please stop giving Goodreads credibility that it does not deserve. Remove their data from your site.
3.0 out of 5 stars On my classics list
I chose this book because I thought I should read an author I had heard about, an author of some stature. It was a bit over my head, but I did finish it. That's a good thing!
5.0 out of 5 stars A very good, well written tale
Glad they published his last work. My complaint is about the translation. I am tired of hearing and reading poor English grammar ; be it spoken on the News or written in the newspapers. My pet peeves are "There's" followed by a plural noun . "Less" is used with collective nouns ; not the ridiculous use of 'less' where few is indicated for the same reason. "Less worry" but "Fewer problems " The absence or death of the word "nor"; or is not used after a negation . Either or , neither nor . And sadly, the loss of the subjunctive . The sentence "parecia estar solo en el mundo", tanslated " he seemed as if he was alone in the world " Please ! Literature is the last bastion of learning ! We speak correctly through reading ; hopefully . After the imperfect ( past) tense especially so; the subjunctive is used, " as if he were " .. Why ?????? Educated translators of literature don't you or won't you observe and employ proper grammar ?
5.0 out of 5 stars A Gemstone - perfect in its brevity
What a gift! We are so lucky that this petite novel was published and not tossed in the trash as the author requested. I’ve read Until August twice and will likely read it again at some point in the future. Not only is it beautifully written but it plays into every woman’s romantic fantasies. Delightful easy reading from a Nobel prize winning author.
4.0 out of 5 stars View thru aging eyes of a true legend!!!
I enjoyed the way he writes as always but I felt his family should have honored his last wish! It missed the mark a little for me.
5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite author
Excellent! I was so happy to get one last novel from GGM.
2.0 out of 5 stars Should NEVER have been published
Marquez is undoubtedly one of, if not THE, best writers of the past 100 years. I was heartbroken to read this. He knew what he was talking about when he asked for Until August not to be published. It’s awful. Maybe it would stand a slim chance by another author, but it’s so beneath what Marquez has given us and what he was capable of in even his weakest moments. It’s truly a shame his children went against his wishes. No doubt Marquez has forgiven them, he loves them, but I can’t imagine they didn’t break his heart too. 🥲
Simplicity and elegance to the end
I loved this simple and meaningful story, despite the author's misgivings that it should ever be published. The prose has a direct and distinct flavour, as if every word is made to count, which is does beautifully.Ana's annual holiday as she leaves flowers for her mother and looks for a man to spend her night with is described with subtlety and nostalgia, and you learn so much more about her character than the shortness of the book would suggest. There is nostalgia too in this being the last writing of Marquez that we will see, and this contributes to the overall charm of the book.
Another vintage Marquez, a decade after his death
It resembles some of his other works written towards the end of his life. A bit melancholic, as missing something in earlier life and trying to compensate for that missing part at a declining age always leads to that end.
Missing him
This book was a perfect way to conclude my engagement with the writing of Gabriel Garcia Marquez whom I have been following for many years. It was a fitting conclusion of the last days of an older life. Marquez is an absolute master at wrapping melancholy, romance and humour in short, detailed observations of a personal life.
As described by seller
I haven't read the book yet but it looks really good.
Only Garcia Marquez can create magic in 100 pages
I found myself haunted and transfixed by this story for days after reading this slim novel by the greatest writer of my generation. Thank you to the family for the courage to publish this raw masterpiece.
