5.0 out of 5 stars I could reread this 1000 times.
I have followed Ina since around 2004. We had the privilege of meeting her at a book signing in 2009. I knew that she was special when (despite signs that said no photographs) Ina reached for my then-9-year-old son Sam and pulled Sam in for a photo behind the table. Ina was as engaging in real life as she is every time I have ever seen her on television. We have used her cookbooks for decades to make special and every day meals that delight, my family and our friends and guests. I found it touching how she opened up about her background in this book and I’m delighted to think of her as one of my very favorite people. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Ina deserves every bit of success that she has earned.
5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful touching story. must read for every woman doubting their worth
Loved this honest and personal memoir. I have been an Ina fan for years but this book takes it over the cliff.
4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring read
The reviews are mixed regarding the book with some people struggling to connect with it and feeling Ina Garten is out of touch with regular life and others adoring the book. I certainly see the argument for it being out of touch, but realized that this book is important to take as a whole package. The ending matters. I was a little critical until the last page or two and then thought hmm maybe I need to go back and read this again! While I do think she was pretty lucky I also realized that Ina is full of pluck. She is a dive in and ask later person who has the luck of being married to a balancing and patient person. Together I think they made life work. I closed the book and felt inspired to examine my own life and question myself honestly, “Do I let luck pass me by?” And “what can I do to be ready to grab a hold of luck when the moment hits?”I found it easy reading, almost like kitchen table conversation as well as interesting, and thought provoking. I completely enjoyed the read and while a bit lucky and possibly out of touch, taken with a grain of salt it works.
5.0 out of 5 stars to Ina
Really good. Fast read and real! You and good just get along so naturally. Write another book. Maybe with more recipes
5.0 out of 5 stars this book will make you love Ina Garten even more!
Ina Garten’s memoir provides an intimate look into her life as well as business advice and life inspiration. She shares her mistakes, her difficult childhood and her relationship with Jeffrey in addition to cooking tips and recipes. Not being a big foodie, I hadn’t used her cookbooks. Now that I know she is all about cooking simple good food for those you like, I will dive into all her cooking shows and cookbooks.
5.0 out of 5 stars inspiring
Loved this book. If you enjoy cooking or baking or just like good stories of aperson who overcame lots of obstacles starting with a terrible childhood withStrict parents no friends allowed ,violent father finally escaping when she headed to college-this book will be fun to read ,
3.0 out of 5 stars Breezy and Cheery
This is a very quick read for Ina Garten fans. I was constantly reminded of her catch phrase, how easy was that! It isn't that she totally avoids the dark moments, she speaks clearly but not at length about her miserable childhool with a repressed mother and a father who sometimes became violent. Or the time she insisted she and Jeffrey separate so she could find her authentic self. Which had something to do with the feminist movement and Gloria Steinem. This was several years after her impulsive buy of a specialty food store in the far off Hamptons, while Jeffrey continued to pursue his career in DC. And later in New York City or at Princeton or in far off places. Another 3 star reviewer mentioned that she never discusses how money has always been available in her life. Her father was an ENT surgeon, if I recall correctly, and Jeffrey has been amazingly successful. Here is a man who, wanting a break to consider his next career move, blithely states he would go teach at Columbia while thinking about it. Right! Somehow, Ina and Jeffrey always know the right people. Nevertheless, Ina did work very hard to make the Barefoot Contessa a success. She is an emotional, impulsive person with a surprisingly analytical approach to solving the problems in front of her nose. Problems that usually appeared after impulsive decisions were put into place. Apparently, she has always, and I mean always, had Jeffrey's support in whatever she wanted to do. Including a separation for a few months. The beginning of the book starts off with their being together almost all the time, and includes a fantastic camping trip through France and Switzerland which lasted four enchanted months. The book ends with the couple pursuing different lifes during the week, and supposedly rejoining on weekends. Although it is not clear to me if that means every weekend, most weekends, or once in a while. As time went on, they bought, renovated, and furnished an apartrment in Paris, the ultimate success symbol for a couple who started out with a tent! She has had a remarkable life. And a remarkable husband.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great start and end
I always love stories of how businesses came to be and how people got their start. I can relate to the struggle. Much of this book is about the beginnings of Ina’s life and success which I loved. The reader is right there with her.Once a success though, it goes rapid-fire into leaps of success, professionally and financially. This was the part that lost me for a bit - this famous person, that fabulous dinner party, the apartment in Paris and buying additional space for it. It just felt like a very privileged person rattling off their accomplishments and bounty. But the last chapter or so brought me back around to a humble woman dealing with a bit of imposter syndrome, struggling with acknowledging the grit it took to build her empire and how it still comes down to her being a woman and wife. Whether you know much about her or not (I did not), it’s an interesting, personal read that I appreciated.
Amazing biography
What a treat to read this book by the incomparable @inagarten . I have watched Ina’s cooking shows for years and made countless dishes from her many cookbooks (her Mac and Cheese from Barefoot Contessa Family Style is a staple in our house) but I realize that I knew very little about her life outside of Barefoot Contessa. From her difficult childhood to her relationship with her husband Jeffrey, from her homes in the Hamptons and Paris to the many career decisions she’s made, Ina shares little known tidbits and stories that demonstrate a life well and deliciously-lived.A must-read for any foodie but also an inspiration for independent and determined women, this biography was an absolute pleasure to devour.Special shout out about the included recipe for Outrageous Brownies - they are even more amazing than their name suggests!#barefootcontessa #inagarren #nonfiction #tackleyourTBR
Great read
I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Ina's journey and learning more about her life. If you have enjoyed her cooking presentations, you will enjoy reading how it all came to be.
Captivating memoir. Bravo from Paris!
An honest, moving, and down to earth autobiography of one of my favorite chefs, poignant, interesting and humbling.Very unpretentious, she shares the victories and challenges of her life, both personally and professionally and how she overcame them. She is truly a treasure both to watch and to read about in this book. Even if you hate cooking, you will love her story. But let the reader beware, after reading this you will be itching to go to France.
Ina has done it again
Love Ina as a cook but this book is something else. So inspirational, so down to earth, really a great read.
An elegantly Individualistic concept of lifestyle
I loved that Ina sprinkled in her gorgeous recipes throughout the book, but most importantly shed light on the lessons she’d learnt in the business, as well as things she learnt about herself.A very candid sharing about her family upbringings made the book content very relatable and real. Her pursuit to find beauty in food, hosting, fashion, and authenticity in the way she comes across to people is inspiring and this book is an awesome read.Thank you Ina - I’m learning to find beauty and elegance in this too.
