On Call: A Doctor's Journey in Public Service

Description:

#1 New York Times Bestseller

The memoir by the doctor who became a beacon of hope for millions through the COVID pandemic, and whose six-decade career in high-level public service put him in the room with seven presidents

“An eventful autobiography [and] a classic American story…Gripping.”
—The Washington Post

“One of the most consequential and most prominent [careers] in American medicine in the past fifty years.”
Jerome Groopman, The New Yorker

Anthony Fauci is arguably the most famous – and most revered – doctor in the world today. His role guiding America sanely and calmly through Covid (and through the torrents of Trump) earned him the trust of millions during one of the most terrifying periods in modern American history, but this was only the most recent of the global epidemics in which Dr. Fauci played a major role. His crucial role in researching HIV and bringing AIDS into sympathetic public view and his leadership in navigating the Ebola, SARS, West Nile, and anthrax crises, make him truly an American hero.

His memoir reaches back to his boyhood in Brooklyn, New York, and carries through decades of caring for critically ill patients, navigating the whirlpools of Washington politics, and behind-the-scenes advising and negotiating with seven presidents on key issues from global AIDS relief to infectious disease preparedness at home. ON CALL will be an inspiration for readers who admire and are grateful to him and for those who want to emulate him in public service. He is the embodiment of “speaking truth to power,” with dignity and results.

5.0 out of 5 stars He Saved Millions of Lives Around The World, & Domestically

Z.R. · July 24, 2024

When I saw Dr. Fauci on CNN, sitting between 2 anchors, and looking carefree as he mentioned his new book, I decided, “Oh. I’m getting that one!”From the first to the last page, it was such a treat to learn more about the “dance” between scientists and physicians versus politicians when it comes to our domestic and global health.Whether it was HIV/AIDS, anthrax, influenza, Ebola, Zika, everybody had their opinion in how to “make it not be our problem.” And it is particularly interesting to have read how wonderfully President W. Bush and President H.W. Bush handled public scares. They both took a blended domestic and global view, with the idea that America, being the riches nation, has a moral responsibility to lead in solving these public health problems. This is not to say that Presidents Clinton, Obama and Biden did any less than the Bushes. All of these presidents did a great deal in support of our need to eradicate these threats. I just hadn’t realized, until reading this memoir, how compassionate the Bushes were. Then there’s Trump. Reading about his focus upon “looking perfect, being smarter than everyone, and being untouchable”, despite the rising COVID cases and deaths during his watch is sickening.Regarding COVID, here’s what my reaction then response was to all things COVID:I learned of COVID when I approached a checker at a local grocer store. This was, I believe March 10th. He was wearing what I thought was a Halloween mask, covering his nose and mouth. The mask was colorful, with pictures of pumpkins, and a white background. The checker was maybe 16-years-old. And, during this “Trump era” I was not watching much news. With a call on my way home, I learned that it was time to turn my tv back on.Once the isolation part of this era begin and I saw reports from Dr. Fauci, I decided to create and masks. Most of the masks that I’d seen reminded me of a diaper on someone’s mouth. In my mind, if we were going to do this for a protracted amount of time, putting some style could help people to wear the masks, and could start some conversations. My mission to donate stylish, lined masks began as a small mission. Then the vendors, as they saw me returning for fabric and sewing notions, decided to support this cause. They gave me tons of things. This led to some 8 neighbors collaborating together, including myself, to make as many masks as we could. One person picked up masks from our front door, each Monday, to deliver them to agreed upon recipients. One visit was to the orphanages in Tijuana. In my bags for those children, I wrote a note, “Sorry for our U.S. President. We aren’t all like him.”In total, I donate 1,500 stylish masks with 1,500 surgical caps that had themes such as “Star Wars,” Ninja”, “Army Strong,” and so many more conversational pieces -in an effort to do my part in stopping the spread.Fifteen United States COVID Lessons To Prevent Future Higher Per Capita Deaths:1. Over many years prior to COVID, we let our public infrastructure become a low priority;2. Disparity between access to adequate healthcare;3. Notable disparity between communities in access to lifesaving vaccines and the availability ofphysicians willing to prescribe antiviral drugs;4. The percentage of people in the US with underlying conditions that make it more likely to have asevere outcome from COVID leading to hospitalization and deaths is higher than in many countries;5. No access to real time data on the outbreaks and the emergence of new variants;6. While the public wanted definitive answers, new, sometimes contradictory information came outfrom government agencies, and the media;7. We were dealing with a moving target in an ideologically divided country, with implications for policyand behavior;8. The U.S. government did not make it clear from the beginning that they knew little about the virusand that we should expect the unexpected because the virus was rewriting the history of pandemicoutbreaks;9. The U.S. government couldn’t appreciate the difference between absolute protection againstinfection versus protection against severe disease in some who got infected;10. All public health officials, and the government did not synergistically work together;11. On the issue of masking, messages from authority members was divided;12. Acceptance of public health measures was politicized;13. Our overall uptake of vaccines was less than most developed nations;14. The wrong tone was set by the highest levels of our government for proper public health; and,15. The spread of misinformation and disinformation around COVID-19This is a great book on how important it is for us to allow scientists and medical doctors to be part of our public health policy. We are fortunate to have had Dr. Fauci’s 6 decades of commitment to public service. Reading some of the vitriolic things that came his way with each virus outbreak, Dr. Fauci became the public face of those viruses. I’m amazed that he continued working on our behalf for as long as he did.

Amazing story of our pandemics in the US. The best description of the misinformation disseminated during COVID and the real truth. I wish this could be required reading for all Americans esp if it is done w/ an open mind. Thank you Dr Fauci!

4.0 out of 5 stars I was sad on finishing this book.

R.C. · August 8, 2024

I normally don't give books 4 stars, but Tony Fauci really engaged me [with one caveat]. Part of this is his gentle and informative style that kept me going to the end through all the scientific uncertainty, and social-political turmoil. When I got to the end I felt like I'd lost a friend.I'm not a typical lay reader, given that I had a 35-year relationship with the NIH, starting with Fellowships, research grants, and ultimately a permanent position on an NIH grant review panel. And, I've taught beginning virology-molecular biochemistry at the university level. So, Fauci's book hit home. I was surprised that he could be so dispassionate through his career, starting with the AIDS/HIV crisis and ending with COVID. But, that's his character and why he so loved.Unfortunately, Fauci became the undeserved bogey man of the right wing, even though he didn't have that much to do with public health policy. I cannot imagine how he threaded the needle between scientific fact and politically inspired opposition advocating things like hydroxychloroquine. Really? As an insider I would add two criticisms in retrospect. At the very beginning of COVID, the CDC, and Fauci, discouraged the use of masks for the public, saying they weren't necessary and were otherwise needed for medical professionals in COVID clinics. That was confusing and contradictory to the public. In crises we needed to 'think outside the box'. There was a 'work around' to this conundrum. Few thought of it.Back then, hospitals were blindly discarding their N95s on a daily basis. That wasn't necessary, as quick ad hoc studies showed [one at Stanford]. N95s could be readily sterilized by heat and/or uV exposure, thus killing the virus. Saving those countless masks in hospitals could have made them available to the public and saved lives in the public. Even more important, it would have avoided the confusion about the need to mask that extends to this day, 4 years later. Yes masking was crucial. Did anyone understand the ability to recycle N95s at the start? I'm not an epidemiologist, but my wife and I had a supply of N95s in my workshop for dust avoidance, and we continued to use them day after day. We never caught COVID.The other issue was surface spread of COVID. The CDC has finally abandoned its cautions about that [except for extreme circumstances in hospitals]. Yet, at the start, surface cleaning was a huge distraction to the public and agencies. True, some viruses can spread that way. But COVID? Anyone informed about HIV molecular biology should know the improbability of surface spread of COVID: ie does HIV spread on toilet seats? And, the science of the surface detection of the "virus" is an entrenched cottage industry. COVID is a respiratory virus, and a major review in Science magazine in the summer of 2020 soon proved the aerosol spread of COVID.To the extent that Tony Fauci could have had an influence on policy, and if he understood these facts, he should have spoken up. He apparently didn't. I take a way 1 star from a possible 5 because of this. Yet, I know that no one is impermeable to such comments made post hoc. There is no one in biomedicine who deserves more admiration and respect than Tony Fauci. I therefore urge readers, even those not in biomedicine, to read this book and come to understand the amazing journey of Tony Fauci and his family, and the difficulty of the inevitable occurrence of pandemics. If we could all raise our children to follow in Dr Fauci's path, the world would be a better place!

Thank you Dr Fauci for putting into words our shared experiences. Your views as a Scientist and Medic absolutely parallel mine as a Virologist who started working on AIDS in the early 1980's, straight out of graduate school to work at Burroughs Wellcome.Your book is fascinating. Thank you for your decades of service and sharing your perspectives. A wonderful read.
