5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect summer romance in a beautiful setting!
I give this book 4.75 stars rounded up to five for the purposes of this review. I really liked this story and flew through! Anyone looking for a great summer romance can find it here. This was my first Carley Fortune book, but I’d like to read more (and plan to read the sequel to this one very soon). It was so fun to experience Percy and Sam’s relationship as it developed from close friends at the age of thirteen to something much more as they got older. Their relationship was so deep and respectful. They knew everything about each other and shared so many wonderful experiences together. It felt like a very natural evolution from friendship to romance (although I did want to smack Sam a couple times, but he was young, so I’ll give him a pass). And the setting of Barry’s Bay was a beautiful, relaxing place. I wish I could live in a cabin on that lake! There were some great side characters in this book too. Sue was such a kind, loving person. Charlie was sometimes difficult to like, but he really wasn’t a bad person. Delilah definitely annoyed me at times, but she turned out to be such a good friend to Percy. I wish we’d gotten a little bit more of Chantal, because she also seemed like an amazing friend.I don’t always like a miscommunication trope in terms of breakups in romances, but this one actually made sense, because Percy and Sam were so young and trying to figure themselves out, as well as their romantic relationship. So, that part of it didn’t turn me off the overall story. I loved the ending (it made me cry), although I wish Sue’s storyline could have been different. In my opinion, this was the perfect summer romance, so if that’s what you’re looking for, I would definitely encourage you to read it!
4.0 out of 5 stars Great summer read
The plot jumps back and forth in time between Persephone's teenage years at the cabin her parents bought when she was 13 (and first meets Sam) to current day where she has returned to the cabin for his mothers funeral. This structure keeps curiosity piqued as you try to figure out what happened in those 12 years between. Some areas of predictability, and the characters, while having some flaws, remain too perfect for me to connect with them.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fall for Sam and Percy in this Almost Perfect Summer Read
What happens when you meet The One at age 13? This sweet book takes the route that they're sensible, have all the time in the world, & both have goals. They only have summers & a holiday together so they rely on email & phone calls. Their emotions, mistakes, miscommunications, dating others ring true as they grow through their teens until college. Their relationship exists completely in a bubble in a small resort town w/essentially non-existent parents & they do nothing w/o each other so readers see the couple under a microscope. Without ground rules for attending 2 different colleges, things blow up.There’s a great deal to like in this - the couple, the specificity of their friendship, the writing, and the setting - Canadian woodsy resorts were off my radar. Sam, his brother Charlie, & his mom make a very warm family comprised of three well-developed characters. Percy emotionally remains 18 until she & Sam make peace. The alternating Then/Now format didn't bother me. I rooted for them. I re-read the book! This Deluxe edition has a bonus chapter that provides the satisfying ending the couple and the readers deserve. After following the bond formed between 13-18, a 12 year estrangement, & a reunion, a clear resolution was required. We get it. Even better, the sequel, One Golden Summer, about Charlie is the best beach book of 2025. Maybe the best book.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great summer read
Every Summer After gave me everything I wanted in a summer read. The nostalgic vibes were so real that I felt like I was living the story myself. The nonlinear timeline was perfectly done, capturing both the innocence and the complexity of youth & friendships. It explores the struggle of navigating relationships in your teenage years as well as in your 30s & how some bonds take hard work and are worth it especially when they are the one for you. I loved both characters in this relationship and I could relate to both of them, deepening my reading experience. The yearning in this story was raw and real, pulling at my heartstrings. There’s definitely some steamy moments yet it’s balanced with a fun, wholesome energy & summer vibes at the lake. It's lighthearted yet emotionally charged, making it a truly satisfying read.
4.0 out of 5 stars Sam + Percy 💕
Every Summer After is a perfect summer read and although it had been in my TBR for so long, I really enjoyed it. I’m a sucker for second chance romance and childhood friends to lovers and I was captivated immediately. Their friendship blossomed into a cute young love romance until one impulsive decision during a vulnerable moment lead to the downfall of Sam & Percy’s relationship. Now over a decade later, Percy makes the trip back to the lake to attend a funeral and memories flood back of her summers with Sam. But does time heal all wounds? Read to find out.I really love young love romances because they are innocent with heighten emotions, personal growths and can be extremely messy. Not to mention the angst that keeps me wanting to read more and this book definitely kept me engaged.
5.0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet ache of first love
I have now read all of Carley Fortune’s books! But I wish I had read this before One Golden Summer, but even knowing how things would end, I loved getting the full backstory on Percy, Sam, and Charlie. This book captured the bittersweet ache of first love, friendship, and growing up. Heartfelt, nostalgic, and beautifully written- it made me want to spend a summer by the lake.
3.0 out of 5 stars Quick Summer Read
It was a quick read, but I made myself read the last 100 pages or so in 1 sitting because I just wanted it to end. There was a lot of build up and I suspected early on what Percy's big secret was, so when it finally happened, it was pretty anti-climactic. The whole Sam at college storyline didn't really make sense, even when the character explains himself. This book is fine for a beach read.
Condition of the book:
The book came with an almost perfect condition without any breakage found. The quality of the pages was really impressive . The printing of the cover was fine and not so dull. The book was an impressive add to my collective at a pretty conditionReview of the novel: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5If you're looking for a small town romance with a glimpse of innocence, this book is the one. I bought it without having much knowledge of the storyline, and was pretty impressed afterwards. I had originally expected it to be a city romance with busy lives, but with the nature of the characters, Sam Percy and Charlie, small town fitted them so well and i wouldn't want it any other way. The character building as they grew older was so strong and inspiring. It's a second chance romance (my first one) and portrayed a very true and realistic friendship even after they've drifted apart. It's nostalgic, intense, and an escape fro the busy lives of big cities, even in the book! The lake and the nature is portrayed very nicely in the book and the entire novel is from the perspective of Percy. It's the kind of writing style that makes you feel and highly aware that you're reading a book rather than reading someone's personal diary; which was kind of difficult at first. So if that works just fine for you, go for it! You'd feel alot - deep effection for the characters and their choices - when you finish the book!
wonderful heartwarming story
I cried, it was such a wonderful and heartwarming book, in a way I haven’t felt before. Absolutely loved it!!
10 out of 10 romance, a must read!
I truly loved this book so much, it got me through such a reading slump and I couldn’t stop thinking about it between bouts of reading and “real life”.The characterisation and tension throughout was top notch, and I could picture each of the characters so vividly. I just adored Sam and Percy, and absolutely can’t wait to read Charlie’s book (queued up and ready to go).The world the author created was beautiful and had me crying in parts. Please buy this immediately, I’m so glad I did!
