5.0 out of 5 stars More Doctors should read this book.
Alcoholism is one of the most debated and misunderstood diseases in the world. Most people think that alcoholics drink to soothe inherent psychological problems such as depression and anxiety. This book asserts the opposite, anxiety and depression are often times symptoms of alcoholic withdrawal and they only get worse as the disease progresses. I really appreciated how this author clearly explained, in a scientific way, how alcohol affects the alcoholic differently than the non-alcoholic and stresses how this disease is not a character flaw or moral weakness of the alcoholic's. This means that an alcoholic can receive all the therapy and counselling in the world but if the drinking continues the condition will worsen, because the drinking is causing the condition. And I also really appreciated the section on tranquilizers and sedatives and the potential devastating effects they can have on an individual if combined with alcohol. I know that to be true on a very personal level. However, even now, thirty years after this book was published, most general family practitioners seem completely ignorant on alcoholism. I've been to see doctors, complaining of insomnia and anxiety, and they seemed very unconcerned with my alcohol intake and were eager to write me a prescription for a sedative and send me on my way. Then I went to see a psychiatrist and told him about my overwhelming anxiety and said I was drinking heavily to cope. He told me to "try to cut down on the drinking", then gave me some very powerful benzos to take "as needed". After reading this book I now realize how incredibly negligent these doctors were!If you are an alcoholic, the one most important thing to take away from this book is that booze isn't helping you cope, it is in fact making it more and more impossible to cope. Your only chance for freedom is abstinence. This book provides a good, solid plan for recognizing your problem, understanding your condition and getting help. I highly recommend it. Of course, most people who are in the later stages of alcoholism usually are not capable of reading books so I would also recommend this to anyone close to someone in that situation as a means to understand what they are going through and what you can do to help.
5.0 out of 5 stars This book saved my life!
This book was a lifesaver for me and helped me get sober. It takes a very scientific and anatomical approach to alcohol abuse and it's effect on the body. It also helped convince me that alcohol abuse is a disease rather than an irresponsible choice. I have recommended this book to everyone I know who has a question about or struggles with alcohol abuse.
5.0 out of 5 stars "The Cause of Alcoholism: Disease or Character Defects"
"Under The Influence: A Guide to the Myths and Realities of Alcoholism,"by James Robert Milam and Katherine KetchamIn 1988, twenty-six years ago at age thirty-three, I began a study on alcoholism. "Under the Influence" by Milam and Ketcham is the best book I have read on this subject of alcoholism to date.In my opinion, if members of Alcoholics Anonymous would take the time to read this book "Under the Influence" as carefully as they read their Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, I believe many of A.A. members would live with less guilt and shame and help ensure success in sobriety. Although Alcoholics Anonymous has helped society accept alcoholism as a disease, they actually contradict themselves blaming character defects as the initial cause."Under the Influence" quotes a statement from AA's, books Alcoholic Anonymous and Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, it clearly states"We (AA's) reluctantly come to grips with those serious character flaws that made problem drinkers of us in the first place, flaws which must be dealt with to prevent a retreat into alcoholism once again."One has to ask, which is it AA? Is alcoholism a disease or did character flaws cause alcoholism? The book "Under the Influence" goes on:"Thus, from its inception, A.A., like the rest of society, has mistaken the psychological consequences of alcoholism for its causes, and the moral approach of the program followed logically. The Christian formula of sin, repentance and redemption can be clearly seen in A.A.'s Twelve Steps, especially Steps 4 through 7."4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings. On pages 156-157 of "Under the Influence" states again"The recovering alcoholic should also beware of the A.A. belief that character flaws or personality defects cause alcoholics to get into trouble with alcohol, a belief which simply has no basis in fact. The alcoholic should be assured, throughout their treatment, that his personality did not cause the disease and that he is no way responsible for it."Patients should be taught never to base the 4th step - `Made a searching and fearless moral inventory' - on a review of their past drinking behavior ...the inventory should be based on their conduct after (italics added) detoxification and enlightenment about their disease and the recovery process."The author suggests that"During the first weeks and months of sobriety is to answer the following question: `Now that I have a chance to start a full recovery, am I doing all in my power to comply with the program, to fulfill my moral obligation to stay sober and to increase the quality of my sobriety."No open-minded clinician or sufferer would deny the helpfulness of the A.A. program if they gave it a try; however, the question needs attention "did character defects cause the disease of alcoholism or did a flaw in one's biology cause this disease? After sixteen years, author Katherine Ketcham declares again that Alcoholism is a disease in another book called "Beyond the Influence: Understanding and Defeating Alcoholism," 2000. In this book, she offers more facts of this deadly disease of alcoholism. Bolo.com offers a review of Beyond the Influence, which I look forward to reading."Science has offered undisputed proof that alcoholism is a disease rather than a weakness of character, yet millions of alcoholics continue to suffer due to inappropriate treatment. Now the co-author of the modern classic Under the Influence has teamed up with prominent alcoholism experts to provide new answers to this national epidemic...The authors also critique our nation's alcoholism policies, including education and prevention programs, efforts to curtail college bingeing and underage drinking, and the advertising and marketing strategies of the alcohol industry."

5.0 out of 5 stars Not only informative, but so insightful with so much research
As a cellular biologist and someone who has a loved one that suffers from alcoholism, this book teaches you in very basic terms how alcohol is broken down physiologically in your cells, how it impacts you brain, your hormones, your nutrition and how it is metablized in your system. It provides history of demographics exposure to alcohol which is so prevalant in our society and detrimental to many. I recommend this book for those who suffer from alcoholism and those who have loved ones who suffer from alcoholism. Thank you for educating me. I couldn't put this book down because it was right up my alley.
5.0 out of 5 stars You can only get sober if you understand why you need too.
For anyone struggling with staying sober this book is a must read. It broke down the chemical, physical, mental and emotional understanding of what alcohol does to your body as a human being. Before this publication I was lost in finding my way to sobriety and a sure life of living alone in drunkenness. Thanks to the basic understanding and simple explanation of ones body and how it interacts with booze of any kind. It’s words of understanding have kept me determined to remain sober as I have for years . My appreciation is intense to say the lease. A must read if you wonder if you have a problem. I had nothing to lose but found out I could have lost everything if I had not took the understanding of this books words to heart. Thank you .
The chemistry of alcoholism, finally!
A long-overdue, clear, simply-termed, well-written explanation of how the human body normally metabolizes alcohol, and what happens when someone's liver lacks a crucial enzyme essential for that task. I can finally understand people's different reactions and attitudes to drinking; my friends', my family's, society's and most importantly my own. This has been an invaluable guide into the nebulous, confusing maze of beliefs, fears and conflicting opinions and theories surrounding alcohol consumption and both the pleasures and problems it brings us. And no morals, guilt or preaching here, just the facts, the science and the paradoxes of this most fascinating substance.Do yourself and everyone you know a favour and read this book
Excellent Book
Excellent clarity on addiction.
Educational
This has really opened my eyes about alcoholaddiction. As a psychologist I can know that it is not a psychological problem but a physiological problem. It is treatable with the correct approach and physicians need education too.
Amazing!
Cannot put this book down!! Absolutely recommend to anyone who had any sort of issue with alcohol, friends and family of anyone affected or maybe you just want to understand more about what alcohol does to our bodies? It has helped me so much to know that the reason I have suffered with alcohol problems has biologically not been my fault. It all makes so much sense now, I wish I had read this book years ago! This book can genuinely change your life!
A great insight !
Very readable and informative. Excellent alternative view and challenges some of the myths of this disease. Really a "must read" for all those seeking a lasting sobriety.
