“Gossipy, scandalous housewives behaving badly might make this the juiciest read of the season."--
Library Journal (starred review)

"Sultry, salacious and utterly unpredictable....You'll devour it."--Riley Sager, New York Times bestselling author of Home Before Dark

The Hunting Wives share more than target practice, martinis, and bad behavior in this novel of obsession, seduction, and murder.

Sophie O'Neill left behind an envy-inspiring career and the stressful, competitive life of big-city Chicago to settle down with her husband and young son in a small Texas town. It seems like the perfect life with a beautiful home in an idyllic rural community. But Sophie soon realizes that life is now too quiet, and she's feeling bored and restless.

Then she meets Margot Banks, an alluring socialite who is part of an elite clique secretly known as the Hunting Wives. Sophie finds herself completely drawn to Margot and swept into her mysterious world of late-night target practice and dangerous partying. As Sophie's curiosity gives way to full-blown obsession, she slips farther away from the safety of her family and deeper into this nest of vipers.

When the body of a teenage girl is discovered in the woods where the Hunting Wives meet, Sophie finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation and her life spiraling out of control.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not show Good

M. · August 19, 2025

I enjoyed The Hunting Wives, but I have to admit it didn’t quite live up to the show for me. The book felt a little less action-packed and at times the plot jumped back and forth in a way that made it harder to stay hooked. I also wished there had been more description to really set the mood and atmosphere. The characters don’t get as much background as they do in the show, which made some of their choices feel a little surface-level. I was especially hoping for more from the relationship between Margot and Sophie but in the book it just doesn’t come across as intense or meaningful as it does onscreen. Still, it’s a good read if you’re looking for something dramatic and messy, just know going in that it’s not as detailed or layered as the adaptation. The show changed a lot about the book as well so if you’re expecting what you saw on screen, you’ll just have to pick out the differences.

5.0 out of 5 stars so much better than the series

T.H. · September 8, 2025

I really enjoyed this book and I think it was really well written. The characters were not about to let you get to know them well at all which added to the mysterious part of book…. Smut , yes. Mystery, heck yes. Kept me guessing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very Desperate Housewives

R. · September 29, 2025

This book starts slowly but eventually develops into a murder investigation, with the expected number of plot twists. However, my reading enjoyment was diminished by the holes in the plot line and the fact that the protagonist was thoroughly unlikeable. In fact, all of the "wives" drink an incredible amount of alcohol, cheat on their spouses, make very poor decisions, and lie throughout the book. Nevertheless, some readers will find the book a satisfactory escape.

2.0 out of 5 stars Excessive drinking, grooming, infidelity, etc.

K. · August 11, 2025

So this popped up on Netflix and I watched one episode and maybe half of the next before reading the book. The story isn't bad, but you have to get through the first 60% of the book before it really hooks. For a book to be really good, I need to want to root for the main character. I didn't feel that here, because she makes one poor decision after another. There's a lot of grooming of 18yr-old boys by grown women, which is just sick. (I think it's equally sick when the genders are reversed and it's grown men grooming 18-yr-old girls.) The main value in this book is simply it's underscoring of the fact that "bad company corrupts good morals." In other words, drinking excessively doesn't end well. (You could play your own drinking game by taking a drink every time alcohol is mentioned and be trashed at the end of the book.) Infidelity (with the main character cheating on her husband with both a woman and a man on several occasions) will implode your marriage. Compulsive chronic lying doesn't end well, either. I won't be watching the rest of the Netflix version and I likely won't read anything else by this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slow to start

V.W. · October 12, 2025

This book is very good but kind of slow to start. If you have seen the show it is not nearly as dramatic but I think I like the ending of the book better than the shows ending.

B.B.B.. · December 3, 2021

I'm not usually into the chatty, rich-bitch Liane Moriarty style of writing as I hate being told what's happening and prefer to be shown the seeds to watch the red herring stalks grow and be trusted to be able to work things out for myself but this novel is the exception. It's catty, well played, well-written, absorbing and though I knew something awful was going to happen I had no idea what or to whom. And though I guessed early on who was responsible, I was pleasantly surprised by the twist at the end. Overall, this was a gripping novel that held my attention from beginning to end and I was glad to be given some of the info from Sophie, who carried the book well. This is definitely up there as one of my most enjoyed reads of the year and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes a good female led psychological thriller.
