The Cockroach

Description:

A brilliant, of-the-moment political satire like no other, from the Booker Prize winner and bestselling author of Atonement. Kafka meets the world of Brexit in this bitingly funny novel centered on a cockroach transformed into the prime minister of England.

That morning, Jim Sams, clever but by no means profound, woke from uneasy dreams to find himself transformed into a giant creature.

Jim Sams has undergone a metamorphosis. In his previous life he was ignored or loathed, but in his new incarnation he is the most powerful man in Britain--and it is his mission to carry out the will of the people. Nothing must get in his way; not the opposition, nor the dissenters within his own party. Not even the rules of parliamentary democracy.

In this bitingly funny Kafkaesque satire, Ian McEwan engages with scabrous humor a very recognizable political world and turns it on its head.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy to report that political satire is alive and well

I may not know that much about British politics, but know enough about Ian McEwan that I wanted to read this novella of political satire, confident that any gaps in my knowledge of the subject matter being skewered would be well compensated by the story itself. I was not disappointed. The political satire is indeed alive and well.An obvious take on Brexit, McEwan reverses Gregor Samsa’s predicament in Kafka’s Metamorphis and turns a lowly, little cockroach into the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. For what end is revealed quickly enough, at least in political terms. For what underlying end is revealed only at the end, after the mission has been met with success, and it is humorous and delicious.Throughout the book, the political situation at hand is utterly ridiulous, and McEwan deserves special praise for conjuring up such an asinine yet totally realistic situation. Well, realistic in that it involves aspects of our ordinary lives anyway, making it simple for the readers to understand the concept even if we shake our heads that anyone would be foolish enough to pursue this particular course of action. As McEwan is excellent at doing, the descriptions are so crisp, the world described so alive, that it projects the reader into the world of the novella itself. That is what I love about his prose so much, the feeling that I am right there with the characters, totally immersed in the drama. This one is a winner.

4.0 out of 5 stars Something of an elaborate punchline.

Cheeky and fun. The best part of this book comes in the beginning when a cockroach finds that he has become the Prime Minister. It turns out the Prime Minister was already a bit of a cockroach. Such great fun.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice allegory, but not compelling

D.K. · November 22, 2019

Cockroach was a short, entertaining read, with some highlights in terms of political farce and banalities. It reminded me a bit of Kafka’s Metamorphosis, but wasn’t as compelling or sharp, and it didn’t live up to my expectations for a McEwan novel/novella.

5.0 out of 5 stars Droll, anti-Brexit satire in the best of British tradition

C.D. · December 19, 2019

I'm not sure most Americans would like this as much as I did. If you have read British satire with a smile in your brain, you might. If you found it boring...well, maybe not. With family in UK who vehemently oppose this, and my experience with "Little Britain" of not so long ago (when pub grub was the best in British eats), well I pity the fools who voted for this. It takes a British writer to mash up Kafka with crazy UK politics of today.

4.0 out of 5 stars Timely

The cockroaches take over to sew discord and bring Britain to her knees so they may thrive. A great re-imagining of Kafka’s Metamorphosis for our times. Johnson, May et al cockroaches? Bit hard on the cockroaches.

5.0 out of 5 stars Monty Python-esque

This was a quick fun read that resonated. I am a Clockwiser who despairs for his grandchildren’s future as the world becomes increasingly weird to me. McEwan makes me feel I am not alone. Thanks, Ian.

2.0 out of 5 stars Call the Exterminator

McEwan is one of the finest writers of fiction in our time. "Atonement" remains in my estimation one of the best novels I have ever read. "The Cockroach" is one of the worst I have ever read. It gives metaphor a horrible reputation, it is a clumsy way of addressing Brexit, and the dilemma facing British politics. I did my best to look for, perhaps find, something of interest in this, and failed.
