After the Ecstasy, the Laundry: How the Heart Grows Wise on the Spiritual Path

Description:

“Enlightenment does exist,” internationally renowned author and meditation master Jack Kornfield assures us. “Unbounded freedom and joy, oneness with the divine . . . these experiences are more common than you know, and not far away.”

But even after achieving such realization—after the ecstasy—we are faced with the day—to-day task of translating that freedom into our imperfect lives. We are faced with the laundry.

Drawing on the experiences and insights of leaders and practitioners within the Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, and Sufi traditions, this book offers a uniquely intimate and honest understanding of how the modern spiritual journey unfolds—and how we can prepare our hearts for awakening.

Through moving personal stories and traditional tales, we learn how the enlightened heart navigates the real world of family relationships, emotional pain, earning a living, sickness, loss, and death.

Filled with “the laughter of the wise,” alive with compassion,
After the Ecstasy, the Laundry is a gift to anyone who is seeking peace, wholeness, and inner happiness. It is sure to take its place next to A Path with Heart as a spiritual classic for our time.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book

C.T. · March 27, 2022

I think this book is a masterpiece. While it is rare I write a review, this book has inspired me to write one. First, is the writing; there is a cadence to his prose that is beautiful and reassuring. The stories are inspiring and the message even more so. That I can somehow balance enlightenment and the daily duties of life is a message I needed to hear. This has destroyed that myth that I need to retreat or go into the woods in order to go deeper into my spiritual life. I can work, have children and still proceed on a path toward personal, spiritual enlightenment. This is a book I will return to again and again. In fact, it is one of the few that I keep by my bed and I encourage you to do so too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Treasure

J.U. · March 10, 2009

This book is a real treasure. Having recently experienced a real mountaintop experience, I was so glad to have the wonderful wisdom and tender guidance of this book to help me through the returning to the world. This is not just a book of opinions by a smart guy. It is a compendium of wisdom and varied perspectives on some very important aspects of living a spirit-led life. The author has effectively drawn on the experiences of a diverse set of individuals with long experience in both their own lives and in the guidance of those of us who are just beginning. This book helped me to understand my experience and to place it in a realistic perspective and that allowed me to retain the treasure of my experience without the sense of loss that is usually attendant to the conclusion of an interval like this. I highly recommend this book. It is one I turn to weekly to reread some of the incredible wisdom and insight conveyed in a brilliant organization. This jewel get my highest recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect glimpse into awakening experiences from varied religions.

E. · August 19, 2012

This book was referred to me by my meditation instructor and I am so happy this easy to read jewel did not pass by the wayside. There is a vast amount of beauty to be found reading the various passages written by the people reflecting on their experiences. These experiences are linked together in the text with insightful prose from Kornfield. If you have had any sort of awakening experience, something more substantial than an "Aha moment", this book breaks through the delusions and expectations you may develop like a delicate breeze dismissing the clouds. If you have not had a moment of deep insight, this book will offer heartfelt glimpses from modern (and ancient) people into what is possible. Awakening is possible for you, it's not something that just the great masters had the skills to achieve, it's actually right there waiting to be embraced.

4.0 out of 5 stars Challenging and Mature

Y.T. · April 4, 2024

As a respectful student of Jack Kornfield, I only recently approached this book. The title is so catchy, I thought it might be "light," but it's actually quite deep and sophisticated. If Kornfield (or Buddhism) is new to you, you might begin with other books, such as my favorite, Wise Heart, but if you spent time with him in person or on Zoom, this book is a great addition to your library.

I bought this book in September of 2011, on the advice of aacquaintance. Being a Psychology major with a BS degree, and, aadditional Substance Abuse Specialization degree, and, some postgraduate course completion from Imperial College of Science @theUniversity of London, UK. I thought, with over one hundred and thirtybooks on the study of human behavior, in my personal study, I've created from a bedroom, to a study room, I thought I had read everything, on one's spiritual journey, toward life balance, including attendance to over one dozen one to 5 day seminars, from "book writers" on the national & international speaking circuit, including, many audio-cassette tapes on those pop psychology, and, "transformation" orientedseminars. The book "After the Ectasy, the Laundry" by Jack Kornfield, I found most enlightening, that, "I have not read everything, I had falsely told myself". The book is easy to read, and interpret, I believe, to consumers of all faiths, religions, including agnostics, andathesists. I highly recommend this book, to anyone, on a spiritual journey for wholeness, and to gain additional peace of mind, who may have a goal of becoming "Self-Actualized" in Abraham Maslow's Hierachy of Needs, or even the beginner, who is on a spiritual journey, (my choice of words) who, may have become dis-enchanted, attending seminars,"when the guru leaves town, all too often, the charisma, and, insight, fade away" (at least that has been my experience form 1983 until this very year, 2011). I give Jack Kornfield, a solid Grade A, as with his Ph.D in Clinical Psychology, again, is written, in very simple language, for even, the beginner, who seeks some answers, that life is a journey, not necessarily a destination.Everyone worldwide, can gain some very useful insight about "Enlightment does exist, and bring transformation, but, they don't last" from pagexiii of my version, of the Bantam trade paperback edition, published in October of 1991. I am also most grateful, to www.Bolo.com who offered this book, at a savings to me, from a independant bookstore, classified as "Very Good" my interpretation, was it was flawless, and "brand spanking new", & received the book with supersonic speed, frombuymeimcheap. I loved this book. I bought it having just attended a 5 day Zen meditation retreat and having had an amazing and enlightening experience when there - in terms of 're-entry' this book was perfect. Because really, after the ecstasy does indeed come the laundry.... I loved the way the author drew on experiences from people from a range of 'faiths' and how it looked for the similarity in our paths. I loved its realism and its straight talking but also its compassion and spirit. So glad to own it.
