(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } This book has a good variety of vocabulary words and is thoughtfully grouped by subject (synonyms, homographs, eponyms, etc). The font size, drawings, and number of tasks per page all make the book user friendly and manageable - not too hard and not too easy. The layout makes it simple to accommodate a child's ability, interest and/or attention on any given day - do a single page, a lesson (3 pages) or more. And for the most part it avoids the tropes and stereotypes that editors think are fine in sentences and drawings in these kinds of workbooks. Although I would like to see a different drawing in future editions other than two teenage girls glaring at each other to illustrate the word "hostile." Perhaps a cat with it's fur on end hissing at...anything?The "writing to learn" section was the kind of thing I would want to skip as a student because of how different it was from the previous tasks, but you know what's fun now? Doing this task at the same time as your kid and then reading aloud your results to each other. You can get creative and make the answers humorous and ridiculous, yet still accurate! The team (Individual, I guess? Thank you to Linda Ward Beech) who put this together did a wonderful job and I wish Scholastic would keep the same format for grades beyond 6th. Is she retired? Can you ask her if she would do it Scholastic? C'mon, make it worth her time! Add a few pages per lesson, increase the vocabulary difficulty per grade of course, but otherwise keep everything else the same. Please!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!!

I bought this book after being frustrated with the lack of vocabulary my children have in the classroom. After speaking with my child's teacher about the lack of weekly vocabluary, and that the children were OBVIOUSLY not going to get this in the public school....I decided to buy this book to use as an at-home tool for my 6th grader (I also bought the 3rd grade version for my younger child). Each lesson has 10 vocab words with definitions, and then 5-6 activities to complete using these words. I first review the definitions with my child and give an example of how it might be used in a sentence. I then let her complete the activities and check them before she goes on to the next one. Depending on the activities, it may take about 15-20 minutes to complete the lesson. She seems more confident with word meaning and this should help with reading comprehension as well. I have been really happy with the book so far and only wish I had started these books earlier. I highly recommend this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!

I purchased this after moving to a very small school and became the Social Studies and Language Arts teacher for grades 6-12 (there were 5 teachers for grades K-12 so it was a very small school). I went to college for Social Studies, so was in very unfamiliar territory for vocabulary in language arts. This became my Holy Grail for middle school vocabulary (grades 6-8 all in one class together) for a year. Since all of middle school were in one class, I couldn't use it the next year as two of the grades would have already completed everything, otherwise I would have used it over and over. It had great activities to help the kids learn the meanings of the words and learn how to use the words.

I used this book for my 12 year old, who I homeschool. This is our third year using these scholastic vocabulary workbooks. The lessons are short and rather easy. Its good for a short and straight to the point word study.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great learning tool

I noticed that my kids needed to learn more words & I wanted to grow my kids' vocabulary, so we started with this book a few weeks ago. We sit down & make flash cards using the words in each lesson & then I let them do the exercises after learning the words. My kids are 5th & 7th grade, some words they already know (about %25) but it's a good revision & they would be discouraged if they knew non of the words so this works out perfectly.

This book is great!
