(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } Because these riddles are so enjoyable, my son does not fight me to do his cursive practice. There are two riddles per lesson. One riddle is offered in cursive so the student practices reading cursive and then copying the text in cursive. The other riddle is in print form and so the student is challenged to rewrite the text in cursive. I wasn't offering my son daily cursive practice when I hoped to use the internet for daily cursive inspiration. Having this book at arm's reach has made it simple enough for me to actually offer daily cursive practice. It does not take long to complete each lesson but the frequent practice has help my son improve tremendously!
5.0 out of 5 stars A fun way to reinforce and improve cursive writing skills!
My third grader LOVES these riddles! They make daily cursive fun, instead of work. If this had a page printout of the upper and lower letters with arrows, it would be perfect. Without arrows, the student will have to learn correct letter formation somewhere else. The book format:-- Uppercase Letter page (no arrows)-- Lowercase Letter page (no arrows)-- 40 Riddle pages with three words to copy, then a riddle and answer to copy-- All practice pages include a tip for improving your cursive (like checking slant, letter shape, etc.)This is a reproducible book designed for teachers. It is meant to be photocopied! I've noticed that the lines for writing the riddle photocopy pretty light, so be sure to adjust your printer settings to a bit darker than normal. If you are looking for lots of individual letter practice, you might try Evan Moor's Daily Handwriting Practice: Contemporary Cursive instead. Daily Handwriting Practice has much more individual letter practice at the start of the book. We use both books daily. My daughter's favorite is definitely this riddle book! However, we did use a dry erase cursive board first. It had all the arrows as well as beginning points and ending points to show letter formation. After she knew how to form the letters correctly, we moved to colored pens and cursive practice books.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fun way to practice cursive
This workbook is a great supplement for learning cursive. It’s discouraging for boys to write in cursive, but thanks to the cute and silly jokes it is now bearable for them to write. This book is more for applying what they already know and practicing cursive. You have to have had some cursive knowledge to use it
5.0 out of 5 stars Our public school no longer teaches it because they are mandated to follow the garbage curriculum in accordance with Common Core
I wanted my daughter to learn to write in cursive. Our public school no longer teaches it because they are mandated to follow the garbage curriculum in accordance with Common Core/Smarter Balanced. But I digress. This is a great book to teach cursive. The jokes held my daughter's interest and the instructions were so easy to follow that it did not require me to supervise or "teach" the material myself. She actually asked to do her writing workbook...unheard of!! I highly recommend this for any parent who wants to teach this valuable skill to their child.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good Practice for my 4th Grader
I like this book because it gives him good practice writing his cursive while being somewhat enjoyable due to the jokes and riddles. What I don't like as much is the fact that the space provided for writing is quite a bit smaller than what he is used to at school. The entire writing space is about 3/8" or slightly less than 1 cm. I suppose it is okay though, as he will need to learn to write on notebook lines which are even smaller.
5.0 out of 5 stars Good opportunity for extra practice
I like the idea of bringing fun into practicing penmanship! My son enjoys jokes and this was a great way to encourage practice with penmanship while having fun learning a new joke on each page.I also like the tips given on each page focusing on letter shapes or heights.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for reluctant writers
This is genius! It is almost a rule that kids hate to practice handwriting. But this workbook makes handwriting fun! And when they are finished it shows the child how to turn it into their own personal joke book. We homeschool my 4th grade daughter and she always fought me on handwriting. It was too boring and long and why do we even have to do it? But not anymore. She actually enjoys it because it is funny.
5.0 out of 5 stars Love it, love it!
My granddaughter is delighted with this bookI I got it for her because it kills two birds with one stone: she loves riddles AND, at eight years old, has been trying to teach herself cursive writing since it is no longer taught in school. Given that my handwriting is my only claim to artistry (my doodling consists of writing out alphabets), I am really pleased to see that, without any encouragement in that direction, she has gravitated toward calligraphy on her own. This book is just perfect for her. I recommend it.
Fun joke book for kids to learn and practice cursive
(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } My 12 yr old son wanted to improve his cursive to be a pen pal with grandma. He loves jokes and this one is full of them, and wonderfully for me, ones I didn't hear before. He has worked assiduously at this on his own, and his cursive is very nice now. He has gained confidence and skill, all while having fun. I highly recommend this book.
Fantastic incentive for handwriting
I have just bought this for my 9 year old (almost 10 though) daughter. She holds the pen incorrectly and forms some words poorly. The book is American and rather curly especially the capitals. So I re-wrote those capitals on sticky labels and stuck them over the original ones. The idea of having something of interest to take in to school and show to her friends as well as impressing her teachers has worked a treat. Thoroughly recommended. She practiced every day during a two week school holiday!
My child really likes this cursive book.
I homeschool my children, and my elementary aged student, often does her cursive voluntarily since I got her this book.
Great book for improving cursive handwriting
Great book for improving cursive handwriting. Some good jokes inside. The children' handwriting certainly has improved! Would recommend for excellent use in the classroom. A described and arrived in good time! Thanks!
Enjoyable practice writing
My daughter enjoys practicing in this book. Good idea to use jokes. I will look out for more in the series
