The authors frame research as a way of knowing, and provide balanced treatment to both quantitative and qualitative research traditions in communication research and present it in a student friendly and engaging format. It provides in-depth treatment of the role of reasoning in the research enterprise and how this reasoning process plays itself out in planning and writing a research proposal and report.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I would highly recommend this text to any instructor teaching a communication specific research methods course. I think it provides a strong foundation for introductory students and covers each of the areas of qualitative and quantitative methodologies appropriately. Additionally it does an effective job of incorporating existing communication research from a variety of fields into each of the chapters. This provides a much needed connection for communication students to better understand the application of various methodologies to their discipline."

"This textbook frames research as a common sense, everyday activity that students already know something about, although not necessarily something that they always do well. It balances attention between both quantitative and qualitative methodologies and helps students think about how to make choice in doing research."

"Its organization introduces students to the breadth of perspective in communication research early in the book. Students are introduced to the basics of both quantitative and qualitative designs in separate chapters-rather than a single chapter that suggests that there is "one" way to create a research design. This pluralistic approach is extremely helpful in avoiding the creation of strong positivistic biases early in the semester. This helps students to be aware of the many ways of approaching research and the values of each approach."

This item was a replacement for a text book that my daughter lost at school. Seller had excellent follow-up and the shipment was timely... made the best out of what could have been a bad situation.

1.0 out of 5 stars Insulting, condescending style

L.H.M. · August 27, 2011

This book is written with the assumption that all of its readers are children who appreciate repeated references to their parents, their roommates, and their great (or not-so-great) dates. As an older-than-average graduate student, I'm finding it terribly distracting to have to read past the repeated attempts at conversational style trying to buddy up to me by talking about when my Uncle Fred scared my dad to make him learn something, since both my mother and my father are dead and I'm a member of AARP.Many of us, in an uncertain economy, are returning to school. Even without that, the Master's class at my University is composed of some 20-somethings, some 30 or 40-somethings and one or two of us even older than that; many grad students spend at least a few years in the work world between undergrad and grad school, and by the time we're taking a course that uses this text we have at least left our parent's homes and had LIVES, for God's sake.Perhaps there are middle-school students learning about communication research. Perhaps even undergrads read this book and don't feel condescended to, though as I remember myself in those years I felt quite grown up, thank you very much, and repeated references to may parents would probably still have grated somewhat. At any rate, of all the textbooks I've purchased for my second college career, this is the only one that talks down to me or assumes I need exclamation points to understand the author's emphasis. Would that it weren't required for my course; I'd burn the thing and dance around its funeral pyre, laughing hysterically. (Yes, it's that difficult to read.)

2.0 out of 5 stars I was overall disappointed by this textbook

J. · November 16, 2015

I was overall disappointed by this textbook. I found that the book could have been shortened and the points made much clearer if the authors did not try to regale their readers with countless anecdotes and personal stories. Communication research is an intricate subject involving multiple academic disciplines, so careful consideration of wording and syntax is necessary. This book lacked the editing necessary to accomplish that. I also found the typography of the book to be laborious and unpleasant to read.
