Citizen: My Life After the White House

Description:

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A powerful, candid, and richly detailed memoir from an American icon, revealing what life looks like after the presidency: triumphs, tribulations, and all.

On January 20, 2001, after nearly thirty years in politics—eight of them as president of the United States—Bill Clinton was suddenly a private citizen. Only fifty-four years old, full of energy and ideas, he wanted to make meaningful use of his skills, his relationships with world leaders, and all he’d learned in a lifetime of politics, but how? Just days after leaving the White House, the call came to aid victims of a devastating earthquake in India, and Clinton hit the ground running. Over the next two decades, he would create an enduring legacy of public service and advocacy work, from Indonesia to Louisiana, Northern Ireland to South Africa, and in the process reimagine philanthropy and redefine the impact a former president could have on the world.

Citizen is Clinton’s front-row, first-person chronicle of his postpresidential years and the most significant events of the twenty-first century, including 9/11 and the runup to the Iraq War, the Haiti earthquake, the Great Recession, the January 6 insurrection, and the enduring culture wars of our times. With clarity and compassion, he also weighs in on the unprecedented challenges brought on by a global pandemic, ongoing income inequality, a steadily warming planet, and authoritarian forces dedicated to weakening democracy. Yet Citizen is more than a political memoir. These pages capture Clinton in a rare and unforgettable light: not only as a celebrated former president and a foundation leader, but as a father, grandfather, and husband. He recounts his support for Hillary Clinton during her time as senator, secretary of state, and presidential candidate, and shares the frustration and pain of the 2016 election.

In this landmark publication, the highly anticipated follow-up to the best-selling
My Life, Clinton pens an illuminating account of American democracy on a global stage, offering a frank reflection on the past and, with it, a fearless embrace of our future. Citizen is a self-portrait of equal parts eloquence, insight, and candor, a testament to one man’s unwavering commitment to family and nation.

Praise for Citizen

“The authentic Clinton comes through: smart, charming. . . . Mostly the former president focuses on the positive. In his first interview after leaving office in 2001, he told me that he planned to use his 'convening power' to make a better world. And he has. Even when he fails, he’s determined to 'get caught trying,' his apt description of his postpresidential approach.”

President Clinton is a great writer and I applaud his humanitarian work alongside Hillary and Chelsea. If you’re interested in a very detailed account of their work, this book is for you. I forgot how long winded Mr. Clinton can be, but he makes his points clear. A very long but interesting read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Model Citizen

First as president and later as a private citizen, Bill Clinton was and still remains a dedicated public servant who’s tragically misunderstood and regularly maligned in today’s post-truth world. This volume, which focuses largely on the charitable ventures of Clinton’s post-White House years, is the story of a humble and honest man who sincerely wants to help people live their best, healthiest, and most prosperous lives.Ever since he became a household name in the early 1990s, Bill Clinton and his family have been viciously and systematically maligned by uncompromising Gingrich-era Republicans, who later morphed into conspiracy-wielding Trump worshippers. That partisan environment of the 1990s seemed very unfair to me, when I was a teenager, and so I decided then and there that I am a Democrat. In Citizen, Bill sets the record straight and tells it exactly like it is — just like he has always done. Chances are you’ve heard about Clinton’s association with dead pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Don’t believe everyone who lies to you. If you believe that the Clintons are murderous or diabolical, or that they could ever harm or eliminate anyone for revenge or to silence them, you obviously should read this book and disassociate promptly from the individuals or corrupt media sources who are lying to you.Citizen gives readers a glimpse of Clinton at his most heartfelt and humanitarian. Whether the chapters are about Clinton providing assistance to victims of natural disasters or negotiating peace in the world’s most volatile places, he clears the air with a refreshing look back at the many charitable organizations he has launched since leaving the White House in 2001.This book is easy to read, and Bill Clinton’s writing style is as on-point and powerful as his masterful oratory skills. Clinton’s love of country is reflected in his compassion for the American people. Sadly, the age of Clinton ended in the early 2000s, and the reprise we were supposed to get, in the form of President Hillary Clinton, had been sabotaged by antagonistic political forces both at home and abroad.Once out of office, Bill Clinton took his mission overseas, trying his best to save lives and improve living conditions for as many people as possible.Even after all that Clinton has endured in his life, he remains an iconic figure in Democratic politics. Published in late 2024, Citizen may offer defeated, disillusioned Democrats a chance to reflect on what works and what doesn’t. Bill Clinton’s 1992 election marked a major comeback for Democrats, four years after a stinging defeat. In Citizen, Clinton once again is offering Democrats a template for a comeback. But will they be wise enough to take notice?
