5.0 out of 5 stars Love it
I loved this book as a child and reading it again doesn’t disappoint, although I think the version I had as a child had more poems in it.
5.0 out of 5 stars Plain fun!
A delightful little book of verse to teach kids of all ages to mind their deeds and words. Wonderful fun.
4.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and great for all kids
Follow the hilarious adventures and misadventures of children, while also exposing them to rhyme and poetry. It teaches many great morals (like not lying and not running away from parents), while it also keeps children entertained with cartoony drawings. Only thing is that it is pretty morbid at some points, so if you are worried about that, you might want to pre read. Over all, Great!
5.0 out of 5 stars but it's SO FUNNY!!
I'm so conflicted as to whether or not to actually read this book to my children, but it's SO FUNNY!!!
5.0 out of 5 stars A very fun book that I look forward to reading to and ...
A very fun book that I look forward to reading to and with my grandchildren (not born yet). Very mischievous.
5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have Book For all LIbraries
A classic children's book where political incorrectness triumphs (and rants and raves with full voice).
4.0 out of 5 stars Four Stars
Everything arrived on time and as advertised
4.0 out of 5 stars Wry and sly
Belloc admits in his Introduction that "people such as me and you...are doing something rather wrong" almost all the time, and that therefore the poems in the first half of the book (comprising the unabridged Hilaire Belloc's Cautionary Verses) are not to be taken seriously. Most children wouldn't anyway, because they'll see the improbabilities of the stories right away--although at least one of them ("Matilda, Who Told Lies and Was Burned to Death") has more than a little of the flavor of Aesop's "Boy Who Cried Wolf." Disobedience, arrogant pride, cowardice, and various unpleasant habits are merrily skewered in rhyming couplets, with the original pen-and-ink sketches by "B.T.B." The second half presents the complete The Bad Child's Book of Beasts, with Ogden Nash-ish observations on the lion, yak, frog, and many other more or less familiar creatures. The book will make a great introduction to Belloc's unique brand of British humor for both kids and adults.
An interesting read
19th century children's literature - very interesting and a favourite childhood read of mine
Great fun!
Great value for just the funniest verse! Bought just to have available to read to nieces, nephews etc after both my sons absolutely loved them when they were young & still do now they are 24 and 29! Did Lord Lundy as part of my O Level selection of poems in school - hilarious!
Clever wording and phrasing
Bought as a present but knew the book well and it is still funny many years later. A very good example of the good use of words. Still worth buying
Great to have a copy of this
