This is one of those books that has been underestimated amongst Irving Chernev's books. I think his 62 instructive games and the move-by-move books always get the recommendations. BUT this book Combinations: The Heart of Chess, I think would be his best!This is what has brought me to love Chess not only as a game but as an art and a sporty endeavor. For those pages and pages of combinational beauty, filling almost all those pages. This is the first book that I have truly read from cover to cover and come back from time to time. I can never recommend this enough, one of the best books I have ever read!

If it used algebraic notation, it would be priceless! Essential for every intermediate to advanced player. 64 years later, and it's still amazing!

I am a Candidate Master 2164 and this is one of my favourite tactic books of all time because it has the tactics of the great masters from the past! I always read this book once a year every year! It is inspiring to see the great masters of the past from 1900-s to 1960. It not only will improve your tactics but will make you appreciate the masters of the past and go over and play over their great games. A lot of chess knowledge and the founding fathers of modern chess!

This book really gives due respect to the masters of old. It also brings to the fore the great gifts each master had. I liked the format Chervnev used to notate each illustrated game. It is right there in front of you. Very helpful when one trying hard the follow and visualize the flow of logic. Modern authors/master put the best stuff in the back of the book. I highly recommend it to beginning players (trying to get on the fast track to better play) and inter-mediate players (working to improve their game).

Logical Chess Move By Move was my first intro to Chervev; then I had to get his other books. This is my favorite, sitting on the Throne after a couple cups of Java, way to stimulate my cortex. The combinations are awesome !

I recently discovered a Kindle edition of another “old-school” chess book that I own in print format: “Combinations: The Heart of Chess” by Irving Chernev. This marvelous and entertaining book gives readers countless numbers of examples of the best combinations of moves (what we more frequently call “chess tactics” today) that make for winning at chess.Irving Chernev, whom I consider one of the most prolific, knowledgeable, and entertaining chess writers of the twentieth century, wrote this book with chess players like me in mind: ones of average ability who want to improve their skills through study and application. Chernev’s prose sparkles on every page. His explanations are straightforward yet detailed, and his prose is sharp, witty, and concise. It is simply a joy to read.Unfortunately, the Kindle version of “Combinations: The Heart of Chess” is beset with serious problems:First, the publisher, Dover Publications Inc., did not convert Chernev’s English descriptive notion to the more modern and useful algebraic notion. (Most publishers who “Kindle-ize” older chess books do covert to algebraic notation.) I think English descriptive notation is much more difficult to follow on a chessboard.The second problem is even more egregious. The publisher apparently decided it did not need to make the diagrams large enough for easy reading. On my laptop’s 15.6-inch screen, I can barely discern the tiny boards and chess pieces in each diagram. On my Kindle Fire HD7, the diagrams are almost indecipherable.“Combinations: The Heart of Chess” could have – and easily should have - garnered a 5-star rating from me. However, I must deduct 2½ stars from my rating of this book’s Kindle version because of its inadequate page layout. The publisher should seriously consider reissuing its Kindle version of “Combinations: The Heart of Chess” with algebraic notation and bigger, better diagrams included. (2½ Stars ^ 3)

Very good, old classic.
In memory of my youth
I had the translated version of this book in 1990s. This is the nostalgia of my youth. Classical annotations may not be familiar with current younger generation but this makes it a perfect example of Novelty of Chess before computers.
