Review

“Dr. Schildkrout takes aim against the factionalizing dualism inherent in our modern mode of psychiatric thought. Psychiatry, she reminds us, is not the stuff left over once the medical is ruled out. Far from it! With this compendium, she has created a pragmatic reference for neuro-psychiatric diagnosis from an often ignored, but important, perspective. The role of the psychotherapist is not the realm of the ‘mind’ alone: Dr. Schildkrout forces us to remember that not only can psychiatric symptoms impact medical conditions, but medical conditions can underlie psychiatric symptoms. In theory, as practitioners, we already know this; but, I would argue, we often struggle putting this knowledge into practice. This book will help us and our colleagues across disciplines to think in terms that, I would argue, are the future of psychiatry. It is one of those rare medical books that you feel you ought to reread at the beginning of each year to remind yourself to keep your eyes open and never stop searching for things hidden beneath the surface.”--Aaron J. Hauptman, MD; Department of Psychiatry, University of Texas Southwestern; Annals of Clinical Psychiatry, November 2014, Vol. 26 No. 4, pages 305-307

5.0 out of 5 stars Is it physical or psychological?

D.H.S. · January 29, 2018

This is a thorough book on the medical diseases that produce psychological symptoms. It is important because too mental health professionals treat the person for the “mental illness” when in reality they should get medical help. I believe every counselor, psychologist, and psychiatrist should read this book to avoid overlooking one of these diseases. I was writing my book at the time I bought this, and it strengthened my resolve to continue writing Depression and Other Mental Illnesses caused by Medical Diseases: It’s not all in your head (Bolo). Schildkrout’s book lists multiple medical diseases, their physical and mental symptoms, prognosis, and treatment. Some folks may balk at the price and the medical terminology, but I believe anyone will find it enlightening. Ask your local library to buy it. I am familiar with the content after working in a psychiatric hospital for years as our doctors were aware and looked for such diseases as hypothyroidism, Cushing’s and others that cause severe psychiatric problems. We referred many patients for medical help since we knew their issues were not psychological.
