Lexus: The Relentless Pursuit

Description:

A behind-the-scenes look at Lexus’s surprising twenty-year success story―in a revised new edition

In the 1980s, German brands BMW and Mercedes-Benz dominated the luxury car market and had little reason to fear competition from Japan. But in 1989, Toyota entered the market with the Lexus LS 400, a car that could compete with the Germans in every category but price―it was US$30,000 cheaper. Within two years, Lexus had overtaken Mercedes-Benz in the United States and made a stunning success of Toyota’s brave foray into the global luxury market.

Lexus: The Relentless Pursuit reveals why Toyota decided to take on the German automakers and how the new brand won praise and success for its unparalleled quality, unforgettable advertising, and unprecedented customer service. From the first boardroom planning session to Lexus's entry into the mega-luxury supercar market, this is the complete and compelling story of one of the world's most admired brands.

  • Includes a new Foreword by legendary designer Erwin Lui, an Afterword with updates since the first edition, and a new Coda by leading Japanese automotive journalist Hisao Inoue
  • Covers the racetrack triumph―and tragedy―behind the new US$375,000 Lexus LFA supercar
  • Offers important business lessons for brand managers and executives

For car enthusiasts, business leaders, and anyone interested in branding and marketing, Lexus: The Relentless Pursuit offers an amazing story of excellence and innovation in the automotive industry.

From the Inside Flap

In 1989 German brands BMW and Mercedes-Benz dominated the luxury car market. Overnight, their world was changed by the launch of a brand new vehicle. The maverick newcomer was quicker, quieter, more economical and a full US$30,000 cheaper than its rivals. That car, the Lexus LS 400, sent shockwaves throughout the world’s automotive industry. It was Toyota Motor Corporation’s first foray into the global luxury market. Within two years of its introduction, Lexus overtook Mercedes-Benz for the crown of best-selling luxury import brand in the U.S. and had clinched top place in J.D. Power & Associates influential ratings for quality and service.

This revised edition of
Lexus: The Relentless Pursuit includes a new Foreword by legendary designer Erwin Lui, an Afterword with updated material and a Coda by leading Japanese auto journalist Hisao Inoue. Plus:
  • Find out what drove the Lexus brand’s success: the how’s and why’s of its reputation for top-notch quality, those unforgettable advertising campaigns and bespoke customer service
  • Get the inside story on the growing pains of Toyota Motor’s luxury division, its vehicle development plans and the lawsuits that almost derailed the brand
  • Discover how Lexus stumbled into its most successful line of vehicles: the luxury SUVs typified by the RX series
  • Understand the boardroom intrigue as Toyota―and the Lexus brand―survived constant leadership change in Japan and U.S.
  • Take a virtual tour of Toyota Motor’s crown jewel factories
  • Delve into the race track triumph―and tragedy―behind the new $375,000 Lexus LFA “Supercar.”

This book is essential reading for automotive and business professionals.

A compelling story of how the greatest car ever built was made. Not a Toyota PR piece, Inside and around California and Japan you get the real human story of how this great brand was created. A great book if you love cars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Written and Researched

A. · July 18, 2018

This book is well written and researched. Its main achievement is bringing together information from a variety of different sources both in English but particularly in Japanese. It briefly covers the history of Toyota before and after WWII and establishes the context for the launching of the Lexus brand in 1989 with the LS400. An alternative title might be: "Lexus: The Relentless Pursuit of German Luxury" since the company's main focus during the initial planning stages was to exceed in quality and reliability but significantly undercut in price the BMW 7-series and Mercedes-Benz SL500. The references are extensive and include the author's own articles for BusinessWeek as well as his interviews with Lexus officials in the US and Japan. It is no doubt challenging to construct a coherent narrative to describe the history of the most profitable division of one of the world's largest manufacturing companies in one of the most competitive global industries. This is particularly so since Toyota has a social and business structure quite unfamiliar to Western readers. Chester Dawson's proficiency with Japanese and links to the Japanese automotive press distinguish this book from that of another related book also written by a journalist: The Lexus Story: The Behind-The-Scenes Story of the #1 Automotive Luxury Brand. That other book provides numerous photos, charts, and timelines which complement the main text well; something which this book does not include. The Coda at the end of the second edition, written by Japanese journalist Hisao Inoue, provides important insights into the internal turmoil during the 2008 financial meltdown which led to the company's dark period of massive recalls and consumer complaints regarding product quality and reliability during 2009/2010. This really ought to have become a separate chapter. The book, which ends coverage in 2010, is in need of an update to describe exciting developments in electric/hybrid drivetrains and advanced driving assistance systems.

I started this book and was really engrossed they dive deep into the original LS400. Foolishly I thought they would continue that detail with other models (like the SC models or the Prado rebadge) It gives a decent job on the NSX but nowhere near as lofty as the LS.A lot about the factories and the company ownership not so much about the models or engines.

S. · May 11, 2017

Very easy to read. Gives the reader an idea as to the mentality and approach in creating a world beating brand. You also appreciate the ongoing work required to keep the brand strong. I would have appreciated the author moving away from merely highlighting the mentality and approach (which he provides in detail) to providing more technical comparatives with other leading brands that led to the LS400 becoming such a dominant force. In addition the author could have provided more information on the development and technical advance of the last of LS400 series regarded by some as the best LS400 and better than its successor the LS430 . However the book is certainly a worthwhile read and provides an insight as to why the Japanese car market is the strongest in the world.
